1 1 1 1 mam In 1914,the world was swept into four years of conflict which held such magnitude that it involved several nations and became known as the First World War. It became necessary to construct several training centers for the so1diers,and Camp Sherman was the third largest training camp in the United States. Since the presence of such a camp would greatly aid the economy and growth of a city, many cities were in competition for the campsite that would train men from Ohio, West Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania. Chilli- cothe was selected and construction began. The effect on the city was tremendous. The camp built its own railway system, a shuttle train service was provided to transfer troops to and from the depot, wells were dug near the Scioto River, and by October the initial construction was finished. Peace was declared in 1918 and it took only five days for the army to announce its plans to discharge Camp Sherman's 12,000 men. November 30, 1918, was declared as Chillicothe Day in appreciation to the soldiers for a job well done. , For the most part, Camp Sherman is a thing of the past, but its effects will not be forgotten. 433
