Foreword The bright sun rises It casts shadows of giant pines Bendlng over a hero s grase Of sturdy stockades r1ch in history Of toll houses ln rural fields The shadows move They fall on curling smoke On moving cars of coke On tlpples silent underneath the sky They fall on fields of rhy thmic waving wheat On silos bulglng vuth the winter s store On monuments to our heroic dead On progress caught in glass and stainless steel The shadows change They catch our lives in silhouette: The careless laugh, the wrinkled brow, The cheer half-checked, then shouted loud, Our willing service to a friend. The shadows fall On low and high, On great and small, Both near and far. These, then, are shadows of our world. 4
