In l943, Miss High School glorified in super casualness. Her hair hung like curled hanks of rope sixteen inches down her back o la Veronica Lake. Pompadours for variety, were bedecked wth floppy ribbons, wilted arti- ficial flowers or downy nests of feathers that could almost equal Marie Antoinette's lavish creations. Always several sizes too large, the sweaters she invariably wore were a sight to behold. The shoulders drooped to the elbows where they met the pushed-up sleeves. From under the sack-like sweaters, plaid skirts, that represented every clan in Scotland, barely peeped. Yards of multi-colored beads wound round and round her neck and a dozen silver bracelets banded her wrists. With all these bangles she really jingle-jangled, and the gooey sun-tan make-up with which she painted her face made her look as if she were masquerading as Tondeleyo. No wardrobe was complete without saddles, mud-bespat- tered and toes turned up from the rain and one mustn't and can't forget the strollers that she almost strolled out of as she shuffled along. Brown rings on the back of her leg left by high rubber boots, jeep-hats and jeep coats, long socks and short socks helped contribute to the nonchalance of Miss High School. But this girl of 43 is only a lost chord in the great symphony of i944 ........ iii There stands that solid character, Mr. High School '43, His backbone is a leaning question-mark against the nearest wall or friend. Bright tweed socks droop over a pair of saddles thoroughly camouflaged by the local terrain. Perhaps a bow-tie tickles the chin just recently scarred by an experimental shave, or a blazing plaid sweater puts fire behind the latest moron joke. Super slickum makes an attempt to flatten the re- mains of a teddy-bear haircut. Fortunately this hair has just aged enough to cover a spot behind that dusty ear where the scissors amputated some precious chewing gum. Aside from endless mouth motion, the only effort he can afford is to twirl a golden key-chain that jangles with the weight of a stolen ring and some Saturday night keys. lt was probably the blow of Miss Fortune that blacked out the once subtle sparkle of his left eye. Not his own books have well-worn the side of his jeep coat, whose plenty of padding adds he-man proportions to sunken shoulders and a low level chest. Callouses harden ten sticky fingers that often play those little red stops on a juke box jammed with another's nickels, Though he may be a sheep in wolf's clothing now, think of the hero he l will be in the future, this Mr. High School '43, Page 11
