Changes ... YESTERDAY Union University, a coeducational liberal arts college owned and operated by the Tennessee Baptist Convention, is the descen- dant of two earlier in- stitutions — West Tennessee College and its predecessor Jacl son IVIale Academy, and Union University at IVIur- freesboro. Jackson Male Academy was chartered during the 1825 session of the Tennessee legislature. The academy provided, educational opportunities for students from the Jackson and surrounding areas on a campus which now serves as the core of the current cam- pus and on which the majori- ty of the present buildings are located. During the late 1800 ' s there was continually grow- ing a desire within the Bap- tist groups in the state to combine their resources to form one college. t -k.
