We were all there in chapel; some of us were studying; some were cat- napping; and the rest were just barely, if at all, paying attention to the chapel speaker. But this time we had a reason for our apathy; rumors had begun to drift down our perpetually correct grapevine that, once again, the committee designated to select our new president had bogged down. We were all con- cerned to say the least; the choice of a president, we felt, had a great deal to do with the value of our diplomas and a few of us had even hinged our decisions on whether to return or transfer on the outcome of the committee ' s sessions. We all sat erect when Dean Wright walked through those doors at the back of chapel though. Some of us thought that we had been caught dozing; but most of us sat up out of respect — deliberate or unconscious — for the man we had the most faith in; we knew we could depend on our Dean to lead us. As Dean Wright walked down the caipeted middle aisle on his way to the speaker ' s platform, our tenseness began to mount; but somehow the presence of this man, who had led others through conflicts greater than ones we shall ever have to face in our lives and had proved his faith when he himself had been stricken and given up for lost, was quietly reassuring. All eyes were upon him as he made his way up the steps and took his seat on the platform; we were soon to find out why the quiet smile on his face had turned into an unusually large grin. The message was brought in and read: The committee by a unanimous vote has selected Dr. F. E. Wright to be the next president of Union University. And do you remember what happened — we stood to the floor in one body, not sporadically, but as if every one in Powell Chapel had thought of it first. And do you remember what we did then? We applauded and applauded and applauded . . . A standing ovation marked the first moment of his administration; con- tinuing strides in the improvement of our school have marked it since. To show some measure of our esteem, faith, and love for our President, we, the staff of the 1964 LEST WE FORGET on behalf of the student body, dedicate this annual to Dr. F. E. Wright — our leader, our inspiration, our friend.
