The President ' s Message Campus life is composed of a multitude of experiences which become more and more meaningful to the stu- dent year upon year as he pursues his college career. Your Campus, therefore, becomes an intriguing subject and it is eminently fitting that the staff of Lest We Forget focus the yearbook of 1963 upon that theme. Inter- estingly enough, this subject with its many connotations and relationships will become more deeply significant to you as the years go by when you, through your respective vocations, social relationships, and religious ex- periences, will be consciously and unconsciously integrating them into the warp and woof of your daily living. Thus you will look back on Your Campus in its fullest sense as having been one of the brightest spots in all the days of your years. What is your campus? A small plot of ground— ten acres to be exact, that had been used by your Alma Mater and her predecessors for educational purposes for one hundred and thirty-eight years— stately oaks- flowering shrubs— a network of walks— buildings— some new, others less new, and still others with the scars of time an ever changing scene as new developments progress before your eyes, and unanticipated improvements are made for your convenience as implements for carrying out the purposes for which the institution came into being. Certainly these features constitute a part of your campus. But is this all? What is your campus ? Personal associations — fraternity life, religious activities, social occasions, extra- curricular activities, companionships, courtships, marriage— the day-by-day intermixing of individuals and the integration of their thinking— the formulation of friendships that will prove to be the most lasting. All these are of profound importance and become an integral part of Your Campus. But is this all? Again, what is your campus? I visualize you as you muse more deeply on this subject and stop for a mo- ment to reflect upon a picture or a story in your yearbook. You are reminded of the classroom, the personal relationships with your teachers — particularly that one who to you best represents the whole spirit and posture and image of what Union claims to be and is — that person who stimulated you to think great thoughts and to give birth to great ideas — that one who inspired you to maximum intellectual attainments and who perhaps proved to be your most unforgettable character as to the real way of life. Finally, what is your campus? Another connotation which may not be so evident to you now, but which the years that are yours will bring to the surface of your character are those spiritual qualities that today are being imbedded in your hearts as a vital outcome of the aims and objectives of the college that you call your own. Your Campus — physical, social, personal, intellectual, spiritual — has through these eighteen years become My Campus too, and it holds its deepest meaning to me because of you and the thousands of others like you who have passed this way in fulfillment of the high purpose which gave Your Campus its birth and has pro- vided it the sustenance of life. Read often — Lest We Forget. My love and best wishes to all of you. ■qran-jgynffwi
