DENT Musical Comedy is as characteristically American as going to college. It seems relevant, therefore, that the staff of Lest We Forget has selected Musical Comedy as the theme for the 1959 edition. Musical Comedy portraying life in American society and the college yearbook presenting a cross section of life on the college campus have their definite similarities. The lilting touches of good humor as found in Porgy and Bess; the satire of Gershwin ' s Of Thee I Sing; the freshness and genuineness of Showboat; and the beauty of The King and I are qualities that are inherent in the student body of the typical American college. No longer does the librettist of the musical art need restrict himself to cliches, rather freedom of thought and expression characterize his purpose. Nor does the com- poser seek just good tunes, but a great score — the combination seeking to effect an organic relationship between dramatic theme and musical form. Similarly the educational librettist sets a pattern for modern higher education that eliminates the practice of platitudes, but on the other hand proposes to stimulate freedom of thought and expression which when combined with initiative and a tone of living proposes to produce a harmonious relationship and a product acceptable to our society. These objectives are clearly identified and depicted through your yearbook. Just as you In observing the performance of the musical-dramatic production exper- ience the events vicariously. In like manner will you relive and assimilate the events of col- lege life as you read and reread the contents of your yearbook. Therefore, let us read often Lest We Forget. — Warren F. Jones President

AM: DR.. D. A. ELLi: Because of his warm smile, his generous heart, his rich wisdom, his years of loyal service and his great soul, the memory of Dr. D. A. Ellis will be forever enshrined in the hearts of Union students. The following lines written by Edwin Markham remind us of him: And when he fell in whirlwind, he went down As when a lordly cedar, green with boughs. Goes down with a great shout upon the hills. And leaves a lonesome place against the sky. So when a great man dies, For years beyond our ken. The light he leaves behind him lies Upon the paths of men. — Longfellow
