Text from Pages 1 - 64 of the 1961 volume:

In Memoriom We, the Senior Class of 1961, dedicate our Yearbook MEMORIES to the memory of our former music teacher, Mrs. Muriel Hansen. She formed our first band and taught at Union Mills from 1949 until 1955. when she moved to Florida. Mrs. Hamen died as a result of a plane crash August 28. 1960. In this humble way we will try to express our appreciation for her kindness, love. and understanding. Not only will she be remembered for her high standards of teaching. but also for her great sense of humor. her vibrant enthusiasm and willingness to go 'another mile' for a student. She won the hearts of all who knew her, with her kind and warm personality. Broward Classroom Teachers Association News. Ft. Lauderdale. Florida gives the following notation of Mn. Hansen. quote: As an indication of the esteem in which Mrs. Hansen was held by her fellow teacher: as well as music educators throughout the state. it is sufficient to say that she was her faculty's nominee for Teacher of the Year' in 1959. An article from the POMPANO BEACH NEWS by James A. Heuser. Guidance Director, states. quote: A fund for the Carl and Muriel Hansen Memorial Scholarship has been established at the Broward Teachers Ciedit Union. A scholarship will be awarded to a high school graduate interested in training for the teaching profession at Broward Junior College. It may seem doubtful that any one person could be 'all things to all people' but Mrs. Hansen came close to being that paragon to her students. iii- Hi Superintendent's Message To The Seniors of 1961 You as graduates in the high school class of 1961 are among the privileged in our country. It is your privilege to move onward and upward in your life's ambitions and work. It is your priv- ilege to be in a country where you yet have the freedoms necessary to achieve your goals in life. You are the ones who will determine which way you will move after school. with your privileges, which your parents and our American society have pro- vided for you, are definite and certain responsibilities which you must likewise ac- cept. it is your responsibility to improve and strengthen the society as you have in- herited it. Then you must pass on to the next generations a type of life which will be better and improved over what we have given you. My hope would be that you continue to improve yourself. your community. your state, and your nation. Then you will also have accepted your privileges and your responsibilities to society. Good luck to you as graduates and may you always feel a loyalty to your friends and teachers whom you have worked with at Lmion Mills. Heber Winebtenner Superintendent of Schools Clinton - Hanna - Noble Consolidated School District Principal's Message LOOK TO THE HORIZON Where have you been? ..... where are you nowz ..... Where will you be tomorrow? ..... The future lies ahead . . . . Look to the horizon. . . . . what is your goal in life: . . . . . What do you want? ..... How do you plan to achieve it? . . . . . The horizon is the foreseeable future . , . . . Are your goals outlined now. clearly in view. or are your goals beyond the horizon, unseen at the present time. and therefor uncertain? Perhaps you have asked this question: What to do about my goal in life ? Now each of you has been given a treasure of invaluable worth. Properly used it will produce a for- tune for you. Improperly used, wasted, or once idled away. it can never be regained. Your share is equal to most others. What is this fortune? It is time, minutes of the day. next week. next month, or next year - - all these are future hours of tomorrow. How will yours be used? To the wisest advantage in order to earn the greatest return on your investment? Or will yours be used in an unwise manner and thereby have a lesser return on your investment. The decision is yours, the task is great, and more im- portant the time is now. Look to the horizon. Seek your goal. then keep it in view. Time is a means of achieving your goal. Your work ahead and your accomplishments in the future are but a sum total of the little pieces of work you have invested through the proper use of time. Where have you been? - - is past. Where are you now - - is present. where will you be to- morrow - - is future. It is the most important of all! Good Luck Class of 196M Lawrence A. Scholl. Principal MR. RICHARD COPPENS B. S. But only nine members Uohn Hiigli, Gary Barbkneckr, Randy Hall, Jerry Beehler. Mike Heironimus, Judy Flasch. Lois McCarty. Betty Merts, Claude Amesi of this first grade class of 1949 remain to graduate. Our first six years were spent learning the three R's. accompanied by numerous do and don't lextures. Mrs. Bailey. as our first grade teacher, kept us in line with her ruler. For the sec- ond grade we were divided into two groups. One group was taught by Mrs, Orders, the other by Mrs, Stoltz. Mrs. Stipp had our reunited class for our third year and Mrs. Pauley was our teach- er for the fourth and fifth gradesr Mr. Graffis and our sixth grade days bring back memories of our baseball team and Judy and Kay, our star third baseman and pitcher, respectively. As we entered the seventh grade. we were permitted to be upstairs with the big kids and thus started our first year of having a different teacher for every class Also came a series of activ- ities which included everything that classes do to make money - - - to everything classes do to spend the money they make. The three highlights of our high school career, that we feel are worth mentioning, are our jun- ior-senior prom, our senior play. and graduation. Our class had the privilege of being the first to take part in a consolidated prom. We had a great deal of fun preparing for and participating in our prom along with the other juniors and seniors from Hanna and Clinton. Our play. a three-act farce comedy entitled Take it Easy was directed by Mr. Richard Cop- pens. Mr. Coppens was a very patient and talented director and thanks to him our play which proved to be a very enjoyable. delightful, but sometimes frightful experiencey was. we think, a great success, As this year's annual goes to press and the day of graduation approaches, we the Senior Class of 1961 would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to our teachers and our parents for their understanding and patience in guiding us through twelve of the most important years of our lives, PRESIDENT Ron Hicks Union Mills 12 Annual Staff 4 Basketball 4 Baseball 1.2 Track 2 Volleyball 4 Pep Club 1.2 Student Council 1, 2 Class Officer 2, 3. 4 U Club 4 Band 1.2, 3 FFA 1, 2 Judging Team 1.2 Class Play 4 Chorus 3 Science Fair 3,4 Senior Class Officers TREASURER VICE-PRESIDENT Lois McCarty Union Mills 12 Annual Staff 4 Paper Staff 2.4 G. The Senior Class of 1961 wishes to thank all of the boosters and advertisers for their generous contributions to our annual. A special thanks, also, to our teachers, especially Mrs. Helen Verkler, our adviser, who worked with us so patiently, and all other individuals, for their efforts and cooperation in helping make this yearbook a success. Senior Farewell We have reached our final year of school and as we have planned for graduation. our past twelve years bring back many memories. During these years, we have been triumphant and heartbroken, proud and humble, considerate and careless. but always hopeful. All of these experiences have enriched our lives and increased our capabil- ity of facing the uncertain future. This is our ANNUAL. We hope you enjoy it. Our plan has been to capture for you just a few of the many fond memories of Union Mills High School. The Senior Class of 1961 -A- y-- .-.x; ,. WWW 3; I ' 'W43-; LiF-Tt-m'ig k ' 1 .
