Class H istory As the final bell rang and the last day of school came to a close, we following high school seniors left behind us many memories: Melvin Allen Dave Howell Dean Schmidt Betty Bowcu Brenda Mercer Margo Schoof Larry Btust Nancy Molton Bob Sensow Bert Burliugham Barb Nablo Jim Sherwood Lorraine Carpenter Mary Novak Tom Welsh Dick Coyer Don Potter Dave Wemer Betty Dowd Joe Satkoski Joanna Werner Bill Eaton Harriet Scarborough Thirteen of us have never attended school anywhere other than good old U. M. H. S. We are: Melvin, Bert, Lorraine, Bill, Dave 1-1., Don, Joe, Dean, Margo. Bob. Jim. Dave W.. and Joanna, Thinking back to the 1954-55 school year. we find that our 7th grade sponsor was Mr. Hubert Griffis. We attempted few activities, but we did manage to pick up corn at Jim Sherwood's home. This enabled us to have two class parties. both of which we will term a success, Vacation came and went. and we found ourselves in the 8th grade with Mr. Paul Brammell as our sponsor. Selling seeds and collecting old papers on a paper drive proved to be no great help financially, but again it provided us with enough cash for our usual two class parties. We looked forward to our next school year with mixed emotions. It would be really something to be in high school---but---first we had to go through the ordeal of initiation. It wouldn't really be as bad as we thought, would it? It was, but we lived through it so we could get revenge the next year. Mr. Richard Chastain was our freshman sponsor. who helped us put over a successful skating party and joined in at our regular class parties. Our sophomore year wasn't overly eventful. Mr. Jack Grimes was our home room teacher. Aside from our chance to initiate the new green freshies. our sophomore year was just an appetizer for the main courseuour junior and senior years. Arlan Mangus was our sponsor for our junior year, one of the happiest and busiest. As money making projects. we sponsored two dances. a skating party, and a magazine selling campaign. Our class treasury was also boosted by the profit received from our concession stand at ball games and out- candy room, open to students and faculty each noon. Mrs. Perry Smith. English teacher, and Mr. Mangus helped us present a successful junior class play in the spring of 1959. It was entitled A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The monetary intake from this project helped to make possible our giving a Junior-Senior Prom later that spring. It was held at the school gym. which we had transformed to depict a scene at the Mardi Gras. Our final year at U. M. H. S. began in the fall of 1959. Mrs. Opal Yeager became our sponsor and directed one of the first projects of our senior year, our class play. We selected to give A-Feudin' Over Yonder . a comedy which we all thoroughly enjoyed as much as the audience. We again sponsored two dances which helped to finance our yearbook. The '60' , which we hope you all enjoy. Finally, in the spring of everyone's senior year comes graduation after which the seniors are Out of School Life---Into Life's School.
