Dedication We, the graduates of 1960, wish to dedicate our yearbook. The '60' . to our parents. the most in- fluential persons in our lives. They have shared our laughs and sorrows. guided us through trials and temptations. molded our characters with moral and religious training. and encouraged us toward success. Also our parents have expressed patience and understanding toward us throughout our phases of uncertainity. They have either directly or indirectly inspired us in everything we have done. Because we so often forget to express our gratitude to our parents. we are making this dedication as a token to say, Thank you. Mom and Dad. for everything. . M. H. S. We are: Melvin, Bert, Lorraine, Bill, Dave 1-1., Don, Joe, Dean, Margo. Bob. Jim. Dave W.. and Joanna, Thinking back to the 1954-55 school year. we find that our 7th grade sponsor was Mr. Hubert Griffis. We attempted few activities, but we did manage to pick up corn at Jim Sherwood's home. This enabled us to have two class parties. both of which we will term a success, Vacation came and went. and we found ourselves in the 8th grade with Mr. Paul Brammell as our sponsor. Selling seeds and collecting old papers on a paper drive proved to be no great help financially, but again it provided us with enough cash for our usual two class parties. We looked forward to our next school year with mixed emotions. It would be really something to be in high school---but---first we had to go through the ordeal of initiation. It wouldn't really be as bad as we thought, would it? It was, but we lived through it so we could get revenge the next year. Mr. Richard Chastain was our freshman sponsor. who helped us put over a successful skating party and joined in at our regular class parties. Our sophomore year wasn't overly eventful. Mr. Jack Grimes was our home room teacher. Aside from our chance to initiate the new green freshies. our sophomore year was just an appetizer for the main courseuour junior and senior years. Arlan Mangus was our sponsor for our junior year, one of the happiest and busiest. As money making projects. we sponsored two dances. a skating party, and a magazine selling campaign. Our class treasury was also boosted by the profit received from our concession stand at ball games and out- candy room, open to students and faculty each noon. Mrs. Perry Smith. English teacher, and Mr. Mangus helped us present a successful junior class play in the spring of 1959. It was entitled A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The monetary intake from this project helped to make possible our giving a Junior-Senior Prom later that spring. It was held at the school gym. which we had transformed to depict a scene at the Mardi Gras. Our final year at U. M. H. S. began in the fall of 1959. Mrs. Opal Yeager became our sponsor and directed one of the first projects of our senior year, our class play. We selected to give A-Feudin' Over Yonder . a comedy which we all thoroughly enjoyed as much as the audience. We again sponsored two dances which helped to finance our yearbook. The '60' , which we hope you all enjoy. Finally, in the spring of everyone's senior year comes graduation after which the seniors are Out of School Life---Into Life's School. Mrs. Opal Yeage . Because I had always wanted to see other parts of the United States, I took the opportunity. I asked Ham Scarborough if she would go on the trip with me. Since she had just returned home from Reno, for the third time, she was glad to get away from it all. We left by the way of a beautiful private plane owned by the Novak Air Service. M Howell is the chief mechanic there, and he is also a test pilot. Mary Novak, of course, is the owner of the air service, and we were lucky enough to have her as out pilot for the trip. Our first stop was Hollywood. California. We accidentally ran into Betty Dowd, who had become a famous singer. She was on her way to a rehearsal. As we walked down the street, we saw Werner's Art Studio. We stopped in and found Ioanna Werner. She was getting ready to paint the portrait of the famous athlete. ean 5ghmigt, Brenda Memwas there visiting, also. grenda lives on a farm in LaPorte County, but she had to make a special trip to Hollywood to get materials and ideas for dress designing. We found Barbara Nablo at home with her family. She had become one of Hollywood's most expensive beauticians. She told us she had just designed a new-type hair cut for Jeff Chandler. She also told us that Dave Werner was in Alcatraz. Strangely enough, Melyin Allemis the warden there. Next. we flew to San Francisco. ,1 9m We :11 was at the harbor. He is expertly trained in agriculture and had come to San Francisco to check up on the produce being shipped to Hawaii. although he lives in Union Mills. on a farm. One of the ships was ready to leave when we noticed that oe Satkoski was the captain aboard. We went to Beverly Hills to see Howard Scarborough. We also found W He was talking to Howard, who is one of the stock-car racers that uses Bob's Otto Race Track. Next, we flew to Alaska. We found the office MW He owns a part of the gold mines. Betty Bowen, his secretary, let us in to see him. EELLBJatlinglzamwas working in one of the mines. We came back from Alaska and landed in the great state of Texas. We found the Lone Star Ranch, owned by im Sherwood. He had a thousand head of cattle and five hundred head of horses. He was having a new bunk house built and he called Dick Qoyer to plaster it for him. Dick plasters homes in the summer, and he teaches school on the Indian Reservation in the wintet. We flew across the Gulf of Mexico and stopped in Florida. We saw Margo Schogf, under water, teaching some beauties the art of being a mermaid at Marineland. From there, we went to Washington. D.C. IoAnn Beaty, as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was the head of the impeachment proceedings against the U. S. President, Don Potter. Mary Novak had to go back to the airport. so Harriet and I went back on the train. Latry Brust was also on the train. He was going to Union Mills to his farm. Since thete was only one member of the class we hadn't seen, we searched and found Nancy Molten still at home trying to decide what she is going to he. .0 P a r a! 0 ll uw JUNIORS Claude Ames Gary Barbknecht Jerry Beehler - t Bill Fabisiak Judy Flasch Michael Heironimus Ron Hicks John Hiigli Bob Mercer Pat Melcalf Betty Melts Bob Nowatzke Michael Orthman Ernest Stephens Pictures of Lois McCarly and Randy Hall were not available.
