WILDCAT BOYS' SPCRT COLUMN Union High, Basketball Season, 1939-19-IO.-By special leased wire re- ports received today the Fighting Union ,Wildcats are reported to have fin- ished one of the best seasons in the history of the school. A total of 16 wins against 3 losses is the Way the Purple and White sharpshooters finished the season. A quartet of four veterans formed the nucelus of the team this season. They were Charles Hargesheimer, Barney Short, Willard Dougal and Vondale Taylor. As the season began Vondale Taylor our stellar center of last. year was forced from regular play because of an injury received in the fall base- ball games. Willard Dougal was then called on to carry the brunt of the center position. Don Knerr showed such rapid progress in the early practi- ces that he earned a starting position as left guard-and he held that posi- tion all season in a most capable manner. Robert Whitaker, flashy little long- shot artist, proved himself varsity timber and held down a regular berth at right guard all season. Charles Hargesheimer, Barney Short, and Willard Dougal lived up to expectations and played a bang-up brand of ball all year. Vondale Taylor, Gerald Reid, Earl DeLong, Eugene Taylor, and Karl Laem- mle were the other members of the Big Ten. Dead-Eye Barney Short won the distinction of being Van Wert Countys highest scorer for the season. ln 16 league games he scored a total of 191 points. Willard Dougal was close on his heels and finished fourth highest with 131 points., The Wildcats who received the coveted' U for their basketball efforts were: Barney Short, seniorg Charles Hargesheimer, senior: Willard Dougal. seniorg Don Knerr, senior, Robert Whitaker, juniorg Vondale Taylor, seniorg Gerald Reid, juniorg Karl Laemmle, senior. WILDCAT GIRLS' SPORT COLUMN A salute to the girl champions of Van Wert County. The Union girls lived up to the old Union tradition this year by bringing home the girls' league trophy after a successful season. Mary Davis, Eloise Miller, and Mil- dred Basil, three veterans, started the season. Mildred retired, and in her place came a capable junior by the name of Betty Mace. The other players to make up the first team were, Anna Baer, Juanita Baer, and Lois Taylor. We finished our season with 9 Wins and 3 losses. In league play we won 6, tied 1, and lost 1. Juanita Baer, was the sharp-shooter of the team and scored a total of 173 points. The girls who will receive letters are: Juanita Baer, Mary Davis, and Eloise Miller, seniorsg Betty Mace, Juniorg Anna K. Baer and Lois Taylor, sophomoresg and Louise Purk, freshman.
