WILDCAT SOPHCMORE FLIGHT On Monday September 13, 1939, a group of sixteen carefree Sophomores piled out of orange buses flooking strangely like schoolbusesl, into a waiting green and silver tri-motor passenger plane which glistened in the brilliant sunlight like a huge bird. Joyously we boarded the huge monster. Miss Sheley, our sponsor, saw to it that our motors were soon humming and we started off in grand manner, with our president Anna Kathryn Baer as pilot, Vice-President Robert McCoy at the controls and Secretary-Treasurer Beryl Grubaugh as radio operator. Toward the last of Sep-tember we swooped down from the heavens with a perfect landing and picked up a new pas- senger, Margaret Oberster. Our plane was refueled, our motors looked over and again we went zooming into the distance in the same grand style as the first. At dawn, October 16, an eventful day was born. We landed in our radio operator's pasture and gave the Freshman a jolly initiation into the high school. The next day we resumed our flight. On December 19, we landed for an evening of polishing the floor of a skating rink. fthis is called skating for somej. Then we resumed our so far perfect flight. But into each life a little rain must fall, and towards the last of December a huge black cloud loomed oin the horizon. Bravely our ship met the storm isemester exams to youj, and we came out victorious. Our pilot decided that, although our ship had braved the storm wonderfully, a bit of repair really wouldn't hurt it. So in January we landed again. This time when we took off, a new passenger, Phyllis Shaifner, went along. We glided along through January and February. The rest of the year passed along with nothing much happening except for a few more minor storms. Our flight ended in May and was indeed a real success. A passenger, Lois Ruth Borden
