UNION AREA HIGH SCHOOL NEW CASTLE, PA VOLUME FIFTY-THREE EDITORS-IN-CHIEF ADVISOR......... COVER PHOTO BY.. ....LARRY ALDEN PAM SPINOSA MR. G. PASCARELLA ....SUSAN WOJNAR THE DUSK OF TODAY ... INDEX OPENING ...4 FACULTY ... 17 SENIORS ...33 FALL ACTIVITIES ...65 UNDERCLASSMEN ...81 ORGANIZATIONS ...121 ACTIVITIES ...155 PATRONS ...163 CLOSING ...178 ...IS THE DAWN OF TOMORROW. Like the golden rays of the sun, our lives seem to have the same brilliant effect on all that surrounds us. For, it is the brilliance of those rays that brings the happiness to many people that enjoy the presence of our being. But, just as the sun has to strive to achieve this goal, so do we! The sun starts at the bottom and ascends to the top every year to meet this demand, just as we do at the beginning of September. It has its bad days when its rays just aren't quite strong enough to break through the cloud bank as we have days when we wish we would have never gotten up. But, like the sun, we don't give up; instead we try harder to reach our set goals. Then, around the same time of year, June, we conquer our goals. For the sun, it is the period of the Midnight Sun; for us, it is called Craudation. During this period of accomplishment, the sun’s luster dazzles out its most brilliant rays and delivers through the heavens what appears to be an everlasting dawn. While on Graduation, we too exhibit our greatest achieve- ment and seem to have found a point in time where we experience the dawn of tomorrow without the dusk of yes- terday. The SEVENTH graders of today are the EIGHTH graders of tomorrow; The EIGHTH graders of today are the FRESHMEN of tomorrow; The FRESHMEN of today are the SOPHOMORES of tomor- row; The SOPHOMORES of today are the JUNIORS of tomorrow; The JUNIORS of todav are the SENIORS of tomorrow; THE SENIORS OF TODAY, ARE THE FUTURE OF TOMORROW. 4 5 m ) sBs m btibies 9 11 12 13 15 J. This victory served not only as a boost to the morale of the team, hut also as a lift in the spirit of the American population. The team’s ability to work together with a fortunate outcome, proved to the people that America can also act as one and achieve a successful result. In November of 1979, the American nation ex- perienced one of the most shocking events that has ever occurred in our history. Surrounded by hundreds of armed Iranians, the American Embassy in Iran was captured, and over 50 Americans were taken hostage. The price of rasom is for the American government to deliver the Shah of Iran back to his once-beloved country, for execution by the Ayatollah Khomeini. Since the seizing of the American Embassy, demon- strations conducted by Iranian students have terrorized our country. ThousandThousands of American flags are risen daily to display the spirit of nationalism felt at home. penora •mammor (w sew) seu ns ''•055 axjr'r The 1980 Summer Olympics are supposed to be held in the Soviet Union. But because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the United States' govern- ment has refused to send their competitors to the lands of the Russians! Action such as this would cost the Soviets millions of dollars that they would ordina- rily receive from American tourists. A treaty of disarmament between the United States and the Soviet Union was impending ratification by the senate. But liecause of the infliction of the Iranian crisis, these talks have not reached completion at this time. 32 g ipi EK3K08S LARRY ALAN ALDEN Long Concert Rand 10, 11, 12; Marching Band 10, 11, 12; Stage Band 11. Although our years in school have passed us up and gone, the memories of our childhood are all laid out and drawn. The laughter and cries of happiness ringing through the halls, assail our thoughts and memories as we turn the pages of the Book Recall. The pictures and the copies all bring out the best, as we study them and ponder them thinking of our quest. When we finally realize our book is coming to an end, we find ourselves reading this poem thinking of our friends. 48 49 Man Curran Divina Jannetti Validictorian Salutatorian 50 52 DESIDERATA Go placidly amid the noise ami haste, and remeinl er what peace there may be in silence. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will lie greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in ycxir own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in vour business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is. many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself, especially, do not feign affection. A victory in this game would not only mean a Tri-County championship and a Scottie birth in the VVPIAL Class A playoffs, but it was also the last game of the regular season. It was a time of recognition of all senior members of the football team, cheerleading squad, drill team, majorettes, color guard, and marching band. Seniors, anxiously awaiting half-time festivities, gathered ner- vously onto the field for their last performance. The announcer began calling out the names of those who had participated in many long hours of practice, in preparation for this memorable night. Then all the lights on the field were dimmed, and the seniors performed to the firelight of the whirling batons. There were tears of happiness and tears of sorrow as the seniors marched off their home field for the very last time. But memories of that special performance will never perish in the hearts of everyone present on the Scottie footl)all field that night. 66 JR[ S On November 1, 1979, the Union Area High girl’s basketball squad hosted Villa Maria in the last game of the regular season. This game marked the first Senior Night ever held for the Lady Scots. Commencing half-time festivities was Miss Diane Williams, coach for the Scots. She presented mums to all senior mem- bers of the team. Then, as the announcer spoke, each girl, accompained by her par- ents, awaited to hear her name in recogni- tion for past years of dedication. Mary Curran, senior guard for the Scots, could not particiapte in the game due to an ankle injury obtained in an earlier contest. 67 i AND lANOpliiE® On November 15, 1979, the Union Band Parent Organization held their annual banquet for members of all the marching units. Mistress of Ceremonies was Shirley Wilson, President of the Band Parents. Other officers include: Pauline Baker, Vice-President; Ber- nice Baier, Secretary; and Dorothy Shaffer, Treasur- er. The setting was the Union Area Memorial School Auditorium. A buffet dinner was served, and after- wards, the senior members awaited to hear the an- nouncing of their names in recognition for the years of hard work and hours of practice they put in as members of the marching band. But probably the most unforgettable course of the evening was when the stage became the site of a Hollywood Night Club. Stars such as Dolly Parton, Jaclyn Smith, Twiggy, and Lucille Ball were im- personated by the male band members and several of the parents. The evening ended with a view of the film taken from the Union — Riverside game. 68 SCOTTIE PLA YOFFS Who are you looking at? You can't eat just one! Guide right. 71 Getting Happy! But as nature goes, it turned out to be a beautiful night. As the final three couples made their way through the arch formation of the march- ing units, the cheering of the spectators grew louder than ever. Then, as the announcer spoke, the crowd fell in utter silence, just in time to hear that Suzy Reno was the '79-'80 Union Homecoming Queen! Suzy's escort for the evening was Ricky De Leone. The reigning Scottie Queen, Susan Coates, was escorted by Mick- ey Baier, student council presi- dent. Mickey presented Suzy with a football, covered with the signatures of the entire football squad. Then, as Suzy was crowned and l estowed with a bouquet of roses by Miss Coates, the band softly played “Nadia's Theme. This evening will long be remembered by Suzy and the Class of '80 as we were one more step closer to clinching the Tri-County Crown by de- feating Shenango. After liattling their way through for a well-deserved victory, the team advanced to the semi-finals at Butler High Stadium for the match against first-rate Knock. Though determined to bring back another consecutive victory, the Union football squad ended its season with a heartbreaking loss to the Knights.
