UTOPIAN 1979 Union Area High School New Castle, PA Volume Fifty-two Sports Organizations Faculty Advertisements Page 91 Page 119 Page 153 Page 161 Where are we going? ... Someone please show us the way ... We need the directions to find our beginning ... We asked for a fun-filled school life. In return we receive many enjoyable and memorable ex- periences. School days ... as the song says, “Those wonderful golden rule days. When decisions were made for us. We didn't have to take control of our lives. But the time is upon us when we must leave these days behind. We now have to take care of ourselves. There isn't anyone else who will Decisions must be made by you — and you alone. It may seem a little scary, but really, wasn't this why we were in school in the first place? To be taught to take care of ourselves. To be brought up to be the leaders of tomorrow. Yes, if you really think about it, that is the purpose of our school years. And for most of us, that is what school does for us. If it didn't, our world would be in sad shape. Yes, we are the leaders of tomorrow. And the sooner we realize this, the better things will become for all of us. Although Commencement means the end of the role we played in our high school years, it also means the birth of a new and exciting life ahead. For it is from the patience and understanding that was delivered unto each of us that directs us to the golden path of success. Without these directions the fulfillment of our dreams would be lost forever. As we crowd our lives with new experiences, we tend to let the old ones slip away. But these memories can be retained by the frequent glance of our school years through the magic window of time - our Utopian. As the pages are turned, you will remember the good times along with the bad times, as well as the new faces along with the old faces that you had encountered on your many excursions in school. You can proudly say, I was part of the excitement and fun of the Class of '79. To be a part of something is very important to everyone and it is a necessity to have a feeling of accomplishment — to know that you have done your best throughout your school years. During these times we tend to let our thoughts roam the past until we reach a place in time we feel secure. Hence, we soon find ourselves back at the beginning, with only our friends and ambitions ahead of us ... 4 7 8 9 10 12 16 CLASS OF 19Z9 Tracie Renee Adams Patrick Michael Angiolelli Heather Armstrong David A. You were a scared little first grader, riding the bus for the first time and clutching your lunchbox. This was the beginning of your formal education. You soon made new friends and were learning as well as playing with them. The next 3 years of your life were spent in this building, learning your three R's: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. 21 Then you moved up to the Scotland Building. It was here that you began changing classes and taking on more responsibilities. There was a real library to go to and more activities to get involved in, such as the Scottie Tales'', the Scottones, and the Gym Show. Can't forget about the 6th grade track meet, and the winners receiving their ribbons. At the end of 6th grade, you were at the top of the world, signing each others' hats and taking your trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo, Buhl Planetarium, and Aviary. 22 Thomas F. Roslyn Cubellis |im Diamond all-night party WT 54 omeeommg Our reigning queen, Susan Coates Pre-Homecoming festivities, sponsored by the Student Council, paved the way for the beginning of the tense and exhilarating - Homecoming! The festivities started on Monday, the week of Homecoming, with Dress-up Day. Hush-button Day was on Tuesday, Bum Day on Wednesday, and Mis-match Day and another Hush-button Day took place on Thursday. The week was concluded with the traditional Blue and White Day on Friday. On Homecoming Day, loyal members of our student body were busy decorating the field to add the extra touch for the evenings festivities. As the sun was setting, crowds of people started to drift into the stadium. The golden rays emitted from the sun lit the face of our reigning queen, Donna Cowher, for the last time at the home of the Scotties, leaving only a crisp and tense feeling in the September night air as a reminiscence of the few moments which seemed to be an eternity before receiving a new queen. The crowd waited in blind anticipation for the announcement that would give the title of queen to one of the three beautiful seniors in the court. For an instant, as Senior Susan Coates was presented as our gracious 1978 Homecoming Queen, hundreds of strange faces seemed united as one while cheering and clapping her on as she tearfully accepted the great honor which was bestowed upon her by Donna. After half-time a receptional dance was held in the Memorial Building in honor of our new queen, with the music provided by disc jockey, Mike Alden. The whole night was perfected in every aspect when the news of our Scottie victory over Mercer was announced at the dance. 55 Senior Susan Coates escorted by Kevin Guinaugh Senior Lori Verenski escorted by Tom Covelli. Senior Tammy lohns escorted by |ohn Rausch 56 57 Gong Show Leslie our winner. On November 22, 1978 the Gong Show was back for a return appearance at Union High School. Angelo Perotta headed the festivities, as our very own Chuck Barris. The celebrities, who did the scoring for the evening, were Miss Williams, Mr. Banks, and Mr. Walters. There were a variety of acts this year, both good and bad as well as funny and serious. The winner was Leslie Hannon who sang People. The Student Council sponsored the event and should be congratulated on a job well done. Everyone who attended seemed to enjoy them- selves and are looking forward to Gong Show III Our gorgeous band! This rock group from St Petersburg, Florida, performed during school and then again at an evening concert. The group did a salute to music up through the ages and also performed current popular songs. Although the weather caused a poor turnout for the evening concert, the show went on as planned and was enjoyed by all who attended. 61 1979 Teenette Queen Kim Warren 62 Senior Kim Warren and David Cappabianco Senior Phyllis Napolilano and lohn Freed Senior Marci DeMase and Anthony Lepore lunior Patty Clark and Bob Stars lumor Barbie Hall and lamile Essa Stairway to Heaven Once again, it was time for the annual Teenette Formal. The first activity of the year was planning and putting on Home- coming. A week of pre-Home- coming festivities was put on and then topped off the evening of the game with a reception dance to honor our new queen. In No- vember, Student Council once again put on their very own ver- sion of the Cong Show. This proved to be an enjoyable eve- ning for everyone, and Leslie Hannon was declared our winner with the singing of People. Once again. Student Council will also organize the Achievement Awards and the ensuing assem- bly. Members of Student Council also attended the Midwestern In- termediate Unit IV Student Fo- rum. The members have gained a sense of responsibility by participating in school-related activites such as Open House. Each year the students of the YEA volunteer to work at registration desks and act as tour guides for the event. Field trips are educational and also rewarding to the deserving members who have supported the club's projects. A popular tradition of the organization is the annual visitation of a particular college or university. The members also look forward to the exciting skiing trips taken every winter and the adventurous excursions to the Pittsburgh Zoo in the spring. Students involved in the YEA learn that there is more to education than meets the eye. Augustine, B Boggs, I Biedka, E. Derry, G Burkes The Union Area High School Boys' Varsity Club has been in existence over 30 years. It was formally called the Varsity L Club. The main function of the club is to raise money for the purchase of jackets for the athletes who have lettered in the major sports. The present method of raising money is the sale of candy bars. Fund raising activities in past years were car washes, the Faculty-Senior Basketball game, talent show, Duquesne Tamburitzans, con- cession stand, selling pennants, fire extinguishers, Scottie license plates, coat check at basketball games, etc. Each member must pay $3.00 dues. At present there are 54 members. Advisor Dick Hart Row 1 E, Seth. P Brogan, T Dierfield, K Leeper, M Chiafullo, M Chiafullo, I Baynham. I Mangine Row 2 I Bok. C. The club consists of the lady athletes at Union who have earned a varsity letter in their respective sports. In appreciation of their hard work and dedication throughout the years each member is present- ed with a jacket during their sen- ior year. This year the club has been in- volved in many activities. A candy sale and a refreshment business during basketball season were among these adventures. But. the most exciting project taken up by the club was the construction of a Varsity Club Lounge. Sweeping away the dust, cleaning up the floor and walls and changing from student to interior decora- tor, the girls found themselves turning an old storage room into a home away from home. The varsity athletes have exhib- ited a great deal of pride in repre- senting Union and because of this, the girls have experienced much success in their endeavors.
