1978 UTOPIAN Union Area H.S. New Castle, PA Volume Fifty-One Editors-ln-Chief.Donna Pisciuneri Chris Ann Rogan Doreen Spinelli Advisor....Mr. Gabriel Pascarella Artwork by Kellie Charles βEquate the rainbow to the storms of life ... THIS IS YOUR LIFE...........PACE - 4 GRADUATES.................PAGE - 17 UNDERCLASSMEN.............PAGE - 45 SEASONAL EVENTS...........PAGE - 65 INVOLVEMENT..............PAGE - 11 1 ... let the arch of opportunity color your world Every morning for six years you skip happily through the glass doors, look around the crowded halls, and somehow you always end up at the cafeteria table where your friends are waiting. OR ... you slump dejectedly through the doors on aching feet, with sleep swollen eyes, and low spirits, practically crawling in misery to your friends. You stand with them for a few minutes, talking about what happened the night before or the sad fact that nothing did happen. How many mornings do we complete this exact routine, with a few variations? About 720 by the time you're a sophmore, and 1,080 when you're a senior; such a large number of mornings, and yet they pass by so swiftly. Those days in |r. High when you're not so burden with the responsibilities you can laugh and scream with uninhibited loudness among your friends. It's amazing whats considered so important at this age: Your tablets and notebooks, your senior idols, and candy and gum which remain a top priority until you graduate. In Tenth grade you get a little taste of senior high status. The guys become eligible for varsity teams and many girls survive the hysterical agony of teenette initiation You trv to ignore the Ir. High kids as you begin to talk more naturally with the teachers, elect class officers, and join Sr. High clubs. The sophmore class has a wonderous event, the sophmore party. There are records to dance to, and yet, with the exception of a few braver students, do you? You play games in the gym, devour refreshments, and tear down any decorations to hold as keepsakes. RAs Juniors, your satisfyingly in the middle of things. It is your classes responsi- bility to organize the Prom and to sell magazines to raise money. Most luniors try to get all their credits accumulated in their lunior year so that they can relax in their Senioi year, but seldom do. You try to get in the way of a yearbook photographer, 1 parties m class for everv occasion it seems like you've iust become a lunior but before you know it the year is over and you realize there is only one more year left. Then with surprising suddenness you're on the top, you're the big decision-makers, you're the SENIORS. You find it somewhat hard to believe as you plunge into more activities and responsibilities that ever before. You vote for class colors, class trip, and class personalities. There are deadlines to meet for graduation pictures, term paper deadlines, and possible college applications. It seems like you just get started and before you know it you're attending events such as Baccalaureate, Com- mencement, and The All Night Parts Every move you make reminds you that you are a part of a class that wouldnβt be quite the same without the touch your After graduation each of you may go your own way, into whatever your years at Union have best prepared you for. But no matter how far your interests may take you, you will remain together as the Class of '78 ... forever. 4 THIS IS YOUR LIFE ... Is that the biggest bubble you can blow' Studying makes tor a long tiring day. Susan is going to paint the gym red! who said snowbal, fighls aren', aloud, 8 No one seems lo be watching the game. 10 T.D. Touchdown ... Da Da Dada Dada Da, Da Dada Da, Fite! Fite! Fite! β’ v t:. y r- ___________ 11 Chris is working as an office aid. Bonnie just needs lime When a shower of rain begins and the clouds become heavy with water, many of us curse the weather for ruining our plans. But while we're busy scowling, the sun sometimes slips out and shines with clean yellow brilliance. We might witness the untouched splendor of a soft-colored rainbow stretching out of our reach; yet surrounding us protectively. In our wonder we seem to forget that the rainbow could not have appeared without the rain we had cursed. Likewise our lives as seniors at Union might have been momentarily shadowed with unforeseen problems and changes that hurt us. But very often, while we are wrapped in our individual anger or aches, something as small as a smile was given to us; how our hearts were lifted! We appreciated the thought that we had a whole class of fellow students to be our friends when we needed them. lust as a rainbow is held in higher esteem than a storm, good times account for most of our memories, and make us smile with satisfaction. But it's the dark times that test endurance, build strength, bring people closer together and make lighted times seem even lighter. Looking down the corridors of the future with a firm base of high school behind, 117 Seniors walked across the stage on |une 2, 1978, with diplomas in their hands and memories in their hearts. Bill Stiles was the speaker for the evening. His topic was Mind Power to Success. Always keep in mind these words: If you can imagine it you can achieve it. If you can dream it you can become it. Sheri Patterson sang Climb Every Mountain and was accompanied by loyce Patterson on the piano. Graduation is a time when Seniors look back on the past twelve years of their lives and wonder what has school best prepared them for. In the Class of 1978, 117 individuals will pursue many different interests and go their own separate ways. Each individual will follow their own rainbow, and at this point in their lives the rainbow of life shall widen and they shall seek their dreams. 36 The Best Is Yet To Be As wonderful as school days are - So full of fun and laughter - The best and richest times you'll know Will come a few years after β So close the door behind you now And as you turn away Review the dreams and plans you've made And hold them fast today Walk proudly as you move along, Feel young and strong and free. And let your heart repeat these words - The best is yet to be. Β₯ Β₯ β + + + + Β₯ $tlute % Tβ7$ ilVz -f- 38 . The beginning of the senior's last farewell to Union started early this year, at the last home game of the football season against Shenango, was properly entitled Senior Nightβ as the senior football players, managers and statisti- cians, along with senior band, Drill Team, Majorettes, Cheerleaders, and Color Guard members were honored for their years of hard work and school spirit. Another Senior Night took place later in the year at the Basketball game against Riverside, when the Senior participants were recognized for their efforts. On both nights the memories that were recalled caused a faint trace of tears and wobbly smiles, for the realization of the ending of our high school years, although exciting, brought a momentary touch of sadness into our lives. β¦ β¦ β¦ β¦ 4 4 β¦ β¦ 39 CEDAR POINT 1978 It was a hot sunny day in the month of May, May 25, 1978 to be exact. Three buses of Seniors began their journey to a favorite amusement park. Cedar Point. They were accom- panied by teachers who chaperoned the trip. The senior trip was an event that most of the class participated in. It left a mark on those that were in attend- ance and gave each student memories that will live with them forever. 41 STAR WORLD'S Point of Know Return The group at the party was Night Stars . Although small in number, this years team set many Firsts . Leading the way were five seniors, Tim Aiken, )im Curran, Chuck Dess, Mike Heasley, Ron Rogers. It was the Scotties first winning season They ended with the best record every, nine wins and six loses. Some of the other Firsts were the Scotties first home win, the first undeafeted week, first double dual victory, first time ever to defeat Mohawk, and the first time to sweep the first three places. These Firsts were the result of hard work and dedication. Many of the boys ran up to 500 miles during the summer. Bob Burkes. Chris Schweikert, and Kevin Guinaugh Missing from the picture are Leo Golba and Jim Diamond The Golf Team finished the 1977 sea- son with a 5-3 mark which was good for a second place finish. The Scotties were led by Senior Chris Schweikert who qualified last year for the W.P.I.A.L. championship. He estab- lished a school record with a round of 70. The whole team set a new record with a score of 397. The talent and experience of next years team makes things bright for the coming season. 68 Seek and you Shall Find often means encountering things you don't want before you reach your goal, as the 37 guys making up the Scotties football team must have realized during the 1977 Football season. They spent long hours of seemingly incessant training, developing strength, (particularly in their running game), and attending a clinic at Penn State way back in April so that when the season-opener against Kittaning indicated one of the toughest schedules in Scottie history, they were as ready as possible. They won the game as they did seven Tri-County League games and felt the anguish of losing only one which was to Laurel. After the season's last game against Riverside our team held the very respectable second place of ten Tri-County teams. Senior Frank Gorgacz acquired special recognition for his ten interceptions during the season, which established a new school record. Another record was set by Roger Thurman who rushed for over 3,000 total yards in his junior and senior years. Despite their difficult schedule the 1977 Scotties managed to accumulate one of the best won- lost percentages of any team in the last twelve years at Union. Although the one loss prevented the Scotties from achieving their goal, they found strength along the way that will play its part in Union's history and in the lives of every player that remembers the 1977 Scottie season. It was a vision of col- orful gowns that blended vividly to- gether under the lights, and like raindrops, smiles sparkled on the faces of the girls on the court. Then there was a shower ... of happy tears that ran from Donna's eyes when she was announced Our Queen. The rainbow of gowns scattered prismatically while the girls hugged Donna in con- gratulations and last year's queen loAnne Gargacz placed the crown on her head. She clutched the bou- quet of roses in her arms and it was as if they'd bloomed there; they matched her dress so perfectly. Her face held the freshness that comes only after a rain of happiness. Per- haps she'd sighted her pot of gold. 76 The 1977 Homecoming Queen and Her Court 77 Donna Cowher 1977 Homecoming Queen Thanks to Mr. Leitera and the student council, who organized it, a rock concert by the group Freefare was performed for the student body Sep- tember 21. Coming off with a late start and working without four graduated starters, including league leading scorers Linda Maglocca (20.3 PPG) and Tina Kokan (20.1 PPG), lunior Co-Captains, Marilyn Chiafullo and Diane Flynn gathered their troops and led their team to a respectable 5-5 league record. The Lady Scots relied heavily on the starting line-up of Chiafullo, Flynn, Perrotta, Curran, and Pfhales, as lack of depth was a problem throughout the season. However, the hustling defense of the girls and with Flynn and Pfhales controlling the boards, the distaff cagers managed to upset the league leaders on several occasions. With six lettermen returning, including all five starters. The red tissue hearts bursting open at the ceiling delicate white trees in line with a fragile gazebo for the couples to walk under, and the red and white streamers swishing along the walls made it nearly impossible to recognize the place. The hours of careful labor put in by the Teenettes, their advis- or Miss Melcer, and several volunteer boys was evident in soft, shadowy lights, and tissue covered card tables with cupid centerpieces that in the end were tucked discretely under arms to be taken home as keepsakes. At the end of the room was the stage for Reality and at the other the elegant court stage which the couples walked onto red carpet. The whole effect was enchanting, and there's no better atmo- sphere to crown a queen in. Last year's queen, Lisa Rossman, relinquished her crown to Debbie McKay who, after a spontaneous kiss from her escort )ohn, cradled roses in her arms, smiled happily in the light of many flash cubes, and accepted reign as our 1978 Teenette For- mal Queen. At her feet were flower girl RaeAnn Quarterson, and ring bearer, lay Budai. After the crowning, everyone was asked to open the valentine cards that they'd received with their invitations, and the one marked with a small X was the lucky winner. There was a little dancing, quite a bit of venturing over to the buffet table for punch, and many, many warm and personal smiles that were lit up for Deb, and everyone who was there to enjoy the Formal. Their year started off with raising money by holding bake sales and selling Krispy Candy Bars. During homecoming they took care of the voting and decorating, and early in the year provided the students with a concert by the rock group FreeFare. In March they were responsible for a successful fifties dance, and in April a Gong Show with student contestants. The year ended with the preparation of the Achievement Awards. Row one: A. Naples, C. The evening was highly successful due to the stationery the girls sold in October and the hard work they put in the decorations. The Teenettes were also remembered for their initiation of sophomore girls in Septem- ber. Senior members were up on a pedes- tal as they dressed the inductees in homely pillow-case outfits complete with matching buckets, and made them per- form skits. A good deal of laughter was tossed around and the girls embarrass- ment wasn't too unbearable. L VE AT RT S E I R TM YE N M. Presnar T. Aiken M. Heasley R Rodgers A. Budai D. Young L. Orras K.
