Three silver and red coaches leave the school back parking lot an hour before dawn. One hundred plus quasi-graduates and a half-dozen bedazzled chaperones sit back to await the odyssey to Hershey Park. The journey appeared to be endless. Grumble. Grumble. When do we eat? Chocolate World will never be the same. Rides ... stuffed animals ... food ... souvenirs ... chocolate ... Back on the buses ... resuming sleeping positions. It’s over? We really are friends? If we could only do it all again. I 28 29 Commencement nerves ... caps and gowns ... diplomas ... close friends and family ... Class of 1977 ... Commencement exercises were held on Thursday, June 9, 1977. The future graduates marched into the auditorium to the music Pomp and Circumstance” knowing all the while that in a short time they would be leaving as a graduate of Union High School, with the outside world awaiting them. Father Richard Zula, Pastor of Madonna Church, gave both the Invocation and Ben- ediction. Mr. Terry Abrams of WBZY Radio Station was the speaker for the evening, giving each person a sense of purpose and inspiration for the future. Senior Rose Annarella sang The Way We Were, along with Class President, Mary Ann Wolanski, presenting a memorable speech to the Class of 1977. 30 A M Commencement The petalled hours of this day unfold Bright with the hues of hope and joy ... The heart of this day holds Warm tones of friendship Tinged with memory's gold. — Mary R. Hurley Father Zula The Way We Were Terry Abrams All Night Party final good-byes ... promises to write ... many tears ... a night to remember ... The Class of '77 gathered for one last time on June 9 after the long-awaited Commencement exercises. The theme chosen for the party was “Midnight Blue and the group Crossroads pro- vided the music for the graduates. The evening contained autographs, an abun- dance of food, pictures, and special en- tertainment by hypnotist Prof. Landon and karate expert Edwin Marshall. 32 “Midnight Blue The purpose of life is not to be happy — but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make a difference that you lived at all. — Leo Rosten 33 The school year ends now as do the class of '77. We only vaguely now remember the work and hardships, but outstanding in our minds are the many joys, friendships, and loves we have known and have become accustomed to. Sometimes we wish we were children again ... for skinned knees are easier to fix than broken dreams. Tears come but only last a short while, for we realize that this is not the end but only the beginning ... 34 Athletics Sr. Lloyd Davisson Cross Country The cross country runners were led by captain Mike Genova. The 1976 football season began with high expectations of continuing the traditional success of Union High football only to be hampered by many injuries. Aside from that, many individuals proved to the county and state the talents they possessed under the training of first year coach, Bob Curry. First Team in the Tri County was awarded to John Wojtowicz, Tim Szewczyk, and Jeff Mott along with Second Team going to Larry Campbell, Don Mangino, Paul Sheehy and Honorable Mention to Alan Burkes. Roger Thurman was the only runner in the county to break 1,000 yards this year. Tim Szewczyk and John Wojtowicz received the recognition of making the W. P. I. A. L. Honorable Mention Team. John was also a Big 33 nomination and was among the Top 100 football players in Pennsylvania. He also made All State Tackle. All in all, it was a year to remember. Coaches Mr. Ed Schachem. Coach Covelli reached the 300th win mark this season. Coach's overall record stands at 311 wins and 126 loses since he came to Union. The Scotties were unstoppable, hooping their way to the semi-flnals of the W.P.I.A.L, and defeating Keystone in the P.l.A.A. playoffs only to lose to defending State Champions Midland 47 to 46. No one can say that we're not proud of our Union High Scotties, for in our minds and in our hearts, the Big Blue Machine will forever be unstoppable. 45 Girl’s Basketball “76” Row 1: Debbie McKay. Continuing the tradition of Union High's great basketball ability, the girl’s team proved for the third time, they are THE TRI-COUNTY CHAMPS. In the fall of 1976, the girls extended their record to 30 wins and no losses, which earned them a berth in the play-offs. It was not until March 1977, that the enthusiastic Scotties defeated New Brighton at the “Dome at the Beaver County Community College. Although they were defeated in the second round of action by a strong Brentwood team, this was the first year the girl's team was able to participate in the play-offs. The team, under the guidance of Coach John Takacs, will never for- get the exciting victories (and grueling practices) of their most remarkable season. I11P$P 4 7---- — The Union Scottie baseball team suffered a heartbreaking season. Af- ter going undefeated in four exhibi- tion games, the Scotties got off to a 4-1 record, with the only loss being a tough decision to Laurel in nine innings. However, the Scotties then suffered two more heartbreaking losses in a row. They lost to Mo- hawk, 5-4, and Wilmington, 6-5. In both of these losses, Union held the lead going into the last inning only to see the victory slip away. After going to Shenango, 7-3, the Scotties bounced back to crush Laurel, 12-1 avenging their early season loss. During the next game, Frank Gor- gacz pitched the first no-hitter in the section. After consecutive losses to Neshanock and Mohawk, the Scotties finished the season in fine fashion by defeating Wilmington 10-7 and Mars 6-2. Union finished fourth in Section Six with a record of 8-6, while their overall record was 12-6. For the companionship of it, And sometimes for the fun of it! Student Life This is it! These next few pages stand-out because of what they are ... the first color section in the history of the Utopian. One of the hardest decisions of putting this yearbook together was, “Now that we have the color, what do we do with it? We could have given it to the Seniors since they were (or thought they were) the greatest. We could have dedicated it to the prom, sports, homecoming, or any other special” event. But, which was the most special”? Our solution and, we think, the best solution, was to use color to show Union and many of its students at their best. Each of us has a character all our own We are what no other is We do what no other can. 89 91 The more we study, the more we know. The more we know, the more we forget. The more we forget, the less we know. The less we know, the less we forget. The less we forget, the more we know. WHY STUDY? ■■ Each of us see the world through a different window. Our thoughts are expressed through many voices. As a people, we are different. As a class, we become one. And our voices become the cry of Union High School. 94 Jo Anne Gargasz 76 Homecoming Queen Senior Attendant JoAnne Gargasz Student Council President Mary Jo Germani escorts Scott Connerly and Jamie Demerest. The dance was entitled, “Winter Wonderland”, and was held in the Memorial Building. The long process of decorating started Thursday after- noon with the hanging of the gold centerpiece. The following day the crepe paper was hung, a white wood- en bridge brought in and an eight-foot snowman were put up. Then, the procedure of hauling over 65 trees to the school began. For over three weeks the Teenettes went all over the city to acquire these white flocked trees in freezing weather. Even though it was a lot of work, it was worth it for the sight was truly a beautiful one. The backdrop for the court was breathtaking! It was assembled with a gold backing among white trees with white twinkle lights. Finally, all the plans were complete. The group Penny Lane provided the music for the evening. The corona- tion ceremonies began with the in- troduction of last year’s queen, Sherri Smolnik. Simultaneously, the band be- gan to play softly throughout the an- nouncement of each attendant and her escort. The flower girl was Stacy Budai and the crown bearer, Jimmy Joe Micco. Then the long-awaited announcement was made. The 1977 Teenette Formal Queen was Miss Lisa Rossman. Immediately following the crowning, the court dance was held to the theme song, “This One’s For You. Congratulations Lisa! Inspite of the many unexpected problems the girls faced in prepara- tion of the Formal, it definitely turned out to be a very successful one. Times like these are remembered when look- ing back upon the days of high school. 105 Senior Night 106 Tears, tears, tears . . . Seniors Receive Final Recognition Senior Night holds a special meaning for every senior at Union. Misty-eyed senior ath- letes, cheerleaders, band mem- bers, and marching units re- ceived their final recognition. The last home game of both bas- ketball and football seasons was dedicated to honoring the seniors who had devoted so much of their time, efforts, fund raising activities, band camps, and moral support. During pregame, all the senior members were introduced with their parents. The half-time activities consisted of senior ma- jorettes twirling fire to the song Rock Around The Clock. Fol- lowing this, the senior members of drill team teamed up with the color guard members to perform their last routine to the song, Those Were The Days. The band then played the traditional closing song, May The Good Lord Bless And Keep You. To add to the excitement of the day, some senior girls went out early in the morning and decorated houses. On Feb. 22. basketball seniors and cheerleaders were also recognized for their contri- butions. Senior Night always marks the end of a very special segment of high school. 107 CASINO ROYALE: A Night In Vegas Srs. Cheryl Salamon and Larry Campbell Srs. loAnn Gargasz and Mike DeSimone Srs. The day started out like the previous gloomy days and crushed many hopes of an enjoyable evening. However, the weather did clear and continued to pre- vail throughout the remainder of the day. The excitement of the Prom held at the Holiday Inn, Casino Royale, A Night In Vegas rose as the hands of the clock became closer to the six o'clock mark. For the first time in Union's Prom history, a sit-down dinner was prepared. Upon the completion of the meal, the simulated activities of “Vegas were in- itiated. Each couple was alloted a sum of money with which to gamble. Booths were placed at intervals around the out- skirts of the room where the “gambling” took place. Winners were announced af- ter the crowning of the new king and queen. Coronation began with the an- nouncement of the three junior attendant couples followed by the four senior king and queen candidates. Fran Exposito, junior class president, then announced, “The new 1977 Prom King and Queen are, and took a pause before con- cluding. “Mike DeSimone and Cheryl Salamon. The excitement subsided after coronation as the dancing and music continued. Bob McKeag and Fun was the group for the evening. By 11 p.m. it was all over. The band packed their equip- ment away and many of the couples were off to different destinations to con- clude the biggest formal event of the school year. This year- book will revitalize memories now and many years from now. Despite what many persons believe — one man is no man as far as a yearbook is concerned. The dedicated staff of the UTOPIAN deserves the credit and the thanks for their efforts and work to produce this annual. The staff began making plans beginning at a workshop in Shippensburg. Fund raising projects like the football program, hoagie sale, ad campaign, citrus fruit sale, fashion show, and the Easter candy sale took place throughout the year. Despite all the work involved, the '77 staff will always remember this past year and the good times encoun- tered upon reaching the final com- pletion of this yearbook. FFA also has given students a chance to expand through meeting new people, traveling to such places as Harrisburg, Penn State, and with a lot of hard work - Kansas City - every journey another opportunity to gain knowl- edge. The FFA students feel if they would have taken some other course other than Vocational Agriculture they would have missed a world of experience. The Demonstration Team consisted of K. jackson, B. Siddal, J. Lavender, S. Galizia. C. Turney, J. O’Conner, K. Or- dak, W. Slater, S. Ordak, and T. Quinn. These students deserve a great deal of credit for their hard work and efforts.
