Zlie Utopian Union Area Jr.-Sr. High School '11 New Castle, Pennsylvania Table of Contents Distinction .. Competition . Organizations Participation . Identification Instruction .. Contribution. 1976 Utopian 4 inctioH 5 yesterday is already a dream A ad tomorrow is only a vision Hut today well lived Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness And every tomorrow a vision of hope Zhe Way We Were 1964-1976 As we existed day to day at Union, not many of us thought that what we did for those twelve years would become treasured memories after we graduated. As we followed our daily routine, wc didn’t take the time to think that each dull, boring day would come to be part of one big memory that would last a lifetime. First grade. How can you ever forget that “butterfly” feeling in your stomach when the teacher told you to stand up and tell the class your name? In those days, you wanted to meet all your new classmates and try to make friends of them all. By third grade, just when you thought you knew everyone. Sunny Avenue School closed and this brought more students and future friends into your world. The next big excitement in your school life came when you went to the Scotland School. In fourth grade, you en- tered a real honest-to-«oodness library for the first time! Remember the first time you and a friend outsmarted Mrs. Padula and talked in the cafeteria? How about the time you got caught laughing in the library? During the next two years you would have the chance to put on a Thanksgiving play, sing in concerts with the Scot-tones, put on the play THE LITTLE SHEEP OF BETHLEHEM, put together the “Scottie Talcs”, and take the annual sixth grade trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aviary-Conservatory. In those days, you really felt “free”; although the burden of being in school was there, you didn’t quite feel it yet. Seventh grade . . . High school . . . the best years are here ... I finally made it, right? Wrong! For most of us, sev- enth grade started out in sheer disaster: “Which way is C-22?”, “Gym9 What gym? There ain’t no gym on my map”, “I can’t find my locker!”, etc. . . But eventually everything worked out. You caught on to the routine, and boy, was it routine! Where was all the excitement that high school was supposed to have? You couldn’t find it. Guaran- teed, there were football, baseball, and basketball games and track meets, but somehow it wasn’t fun to watch kids who you didn’t even know compete in these events. So, you started to familiarize yourself wtth the names and faces of all the upperclassmen, just to impress your friends. In Junior High, you felt excluded from all the activities. Ninth grade brought a bit more involvement, but some- thing was still lacking. There was still that “left-out” feeling within you. Finally, the big step came tenth grade! There were pep rallies, dances, sports activities and clubs that finally made you feel part of Union. The Sophomore Party was the big social event for almost everyone in the class. In your Junior year, you drifted around, anticipating the time when you would become a Senior. You worked your way through the year both in school and in the extra-curricular activities. At the end of the year, some of your friends were lucky enough to go to the prom. The prom was practically the culmination of all the events of the last two years. After all the waiting, the work and the drudgery, it finally happened: The Class of 1975 graduated! You were a Se- nior! When the time finally came, you didn’t expect it. The excitement was there, but it wasn’t what you expected. At that time, you didn’t realize that you were about to enter the hardest year of your school life. At the end of the strike, you entered Union with your final schedule and a new attitude. After all, this was the year you had waited eleven years for! The years started out with a bang the initiation of new Teenette members. If you thought that was bad, you didn’t know what the rest of the year had in store for you. The rest of 1975 went normally, except for the minor everyday occurrances. But, the Bicentennial year started off with fireworks! There was a play, GET SMART. It should have been entitled THE PLAY THAT WAS NEVER TO BE, for the main reason that it never was. The next activity was the Teenette Formal which was attended by many. Even if you didn’t attend, you were probably busy with the many preparations. After the Formal, “Senioritis” started to hit. You were looking forward to graduation. But, the weeks passed slow- ly. All the tests were getting you down. You were looking forward to the Senior activities. Finally, it was May and time for the Prom. After the Prom came the Senior Exams. It was a hard and gruelling week, but most people made it through. School was out. You were overjoyed! The fun was just beginning. The Senior trip was to Cedar Point, and you ran around there like a fool all day. The next two days were taken up with Commencement and Baccalaureate practice. Those two days made you remember all the fun days at school. The day of Commencement practice was a day you had waited for for a long time. How could you ever forget all the cars that were decorated for the traditional “last ride” around the school? After practice came the real thing. Baccalaureate came and went, and then came Commencement night. Commence- ment ... the last walk down the halls as a student ... the completion of an entire phase of your life. You sat through it, got your diploma, and changed from student to alumnus in a split second. After the emotional upheaval of graduation, you expended your excess energy by dancing all night at the All-Night Party. You were involved with your friends, so it didn’t occur to you that you were out of school, permanently. Undeniably, it was over. So now, you can think back to all the things you did during your stay at Union. There were the big things that the class did as a whole for you to remember, but there were also the small, intimate things that were done to re- member. These things were probably done with a close friend or group of friends. And perhaps, in your mind, these are the most important memories of all. Zhe Class of 1976 Remembers Patty Adamczyk February 10,1958 to March 3,1975 When a friend is gone you miss her and very often you wish that, while she was still liere, you had been a little more thoughtful of her or that you had done some special thing for her. Unfortunately, you can’t go back and add things to your life, no matter how badly you want to. The best you can do is to think of your friend with love and respect and to realize how important it is to care and to show that you care, while you are able. Faye Stoner “I shall pass through this world but once. If, therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for 1 shall not pass this way again.”- De- Grellect Senior Gass Officers: Rob Jolley, Treasurer; Jan Rausch, Vice President; Jim Cliiafullo, President; Renee Magno, Secretary Class Of 1976 Kimberly M. The theme song of the party was “Do You Know Where You're Going To? and the decorations followed a Hawaiian theme. As the graduates entered the party they were greeted in the traditional Hawaiian fashion as the senior parents, who sponsored the party, placed leis around their necks. Then they entered the paradise-like dance area which was decorated with palm trees, coconuts, pineapples. Ilowcrs. a fountain, and Hawaiian tiki torches. Music for the evening was provided by “Fresh”. Those in attendance were also entertained by Mr. Paul Lombardo, a hypnotist, and Mr. F.dwin Mar- shall, a karate demonstrator. This was the best sea- son the Scotties have ever had. Although the Du- al meet record wasn’t good, the Invitational record was fantastic. The team was too small and spread too thin for many wins in dual meets. During the Invitationals, the Scotties shined in individual efforts. Hampered by snow and rain, the “Polar Bears”, under Coach Roussos trained several months prior to the start of the season. All the guys trained for their various events and anxiously awaited the first meet. The “Gallant Few” broke many records this year. Records were broken in practically every event. The men who broke these records were honored by having their names placed in the track record board. They, along with the rest of the track team and statisticians were honored at a post-season Track-Baseball banquet. These men, as well as the rest of the team, were very dedicated and deserve much credit for their successful year. The 76 Scottie thinclads were sparked by twelve se- niors. In the running events were: Keith Brennamen, Ron Bruno, Ray Kelly. Mike Nicholson, Tom Perrett, Brian Spinosa, Greg Summerville, and occasionally Bob Carr, Joe French, and Roland Thompson. This year’s theme “Feelings of Winter” was highlighted by the decorations which turned the room into a “Winter Wonderland.” Huge murals depicting winter scenes and sparkling snowflakes covered the walls. Thousands of shimmering white bal- loons turned the ceiling into a cloudy, winter sky. Music for the evening was provided by one of New Castle’s best, “Randi Kat.” The theme song, “Feelings” was sung during coronation when Miss Sheree Smolnik was crowned 1976 Formal Queen, by last year’s Queen Miss Jodi Jenkins. too 1976 FORMAL COURT: (front)-Dawn Funk, Queen Sheree Smolnik escorted by Greg Cassella, and Marshall Conti, Jr. (back)-Senior Kim Bianchi escorted by Vince Caimona, Junior Becky Ldmiston escorted by John Ruzich, Diane Jimm escorted by Louie Abraham, Sophomore Lorraine Ransom escorted by Dave DeLeone, Junior Lisa Rossman escorted by Andy Budai, Senior Dorothy Kerr escorted by Dave Wiech. From the first day of school until the end of basketball season, the halls were covered with signs saying. “We’re No. l.“ While the rest of the world was sleeping senior girls and pep club members spent the nights sneaking around the township decorating the player’s houses. Be- fore football and basketball play-off games, these girls decided to boost school spirit by surprising the students with a sign and balloon-covered school. Even though the number of pep rallies was cut back this year. Union students de- monstrated support of their teams by showing a great deal of enthusiasm at the 4 rallies we did have. On Thursday nights during footbll season, a majority ol the student body showed up at the football field for a combination jam sccsion-pcp rally . RB and his group supplied the music and the students supplied the cheer- ing! W hat about basketball season? Who could possiblv forget the Mohawk game when RB. Keith. Paul and Tony “psyched up’’ the fans by having a pre-game rock con- cert? How about the surprised look on the faces of Mohawk fans before the game and cspecailly their looks after the game? Union students showed up at Mohawk with bicentennial hats and loud voices and cheered their team to yet another victory! All this enthusiasm showed what we already knew ’76 WAS THE YEAR OF THE SCOTTIES. 108 109 ■ Jdenti fication Richard Adamo Lory Adams Jane Ayers Margaret Bibb Carrie Bartelone Judy Baskeyfield Karen Brennaman Scott Brogan Regina Brown Diana Burkes Scott Campbell Gregory Capots Faith Carmella Donald Cartwright Albert Cassidy Jeff Clark Kelly Clark Mark Clause CLASS OF 1977 The following people were also members of the Junior class. The first dance. The Bobby Harper Situation, was sponsored by Student Council. Bobby Harper entertained the students with current “Top 40” hits as well as some 50’s tunes. The students showed their strength in the “tug-of- war” contest and then had a “battle of the sexes” in the Guys vs. Gals basket- ball shooting contest. As if those activities weren’t enough, there were also NFL football movies, cartoons, and an “X-rated film” shown. The second dance, featuring the group “Interlude”, was sponsored by the U- topian. This was the first time that a live group was brought to Union strictly for the Junior High. The students danced in the dark for an entire evening to a wide variety of pop tunes ranging from Neil Sedaka to Chicago to the Bay City Rollers. Both dances were well attended and enjoyed by all! 141 -il u m _ ,i|i]i| tiiij ii 11 r - • i • • | -1,1.1 - 1111 1 ,7r7.ii 11 11111 llljlll III .1111 I III II111 11111 1111111II UNION AREA BOARD Ol EDUCATION: Seated (L-R) Mr. Louis Clause, Vice Presi- dent; Mr. John Fusco, Presi- dent; Mrs. Isabelle Bartley, Secretary; Mrs. Betty Presnar Standing: Mr. Nicholas Squcg- lia, Mr. James Kerr, Mrs. Laura Wrobel, Mrs. Vinci Henry, Mr. Ralph Pisciuncri School Board and Administration 144 Mr. John T. THE WORLD’S FIRST SUBMARINE ACTION! That early submarine was a strangely designed craft called the Turtle. Its in- ventor, David Bushnell. was the son of a Connecticut farmer. And although the idea of a submarine had occurred to others previously, it was Bushnell's Revolutionary War Turtle that was first to participate in a military operation. Run by hand power, the one-man ship was submerged by filling the ballast tanks with water. Its mine was intended for the British man-of-war EAGLE, then anchored in New York Harbor. Dramatically, the attack came within a hairsbreadth of success. Thus, just a year after the Navy was born, the future of the underseas service was already being built on a proud tradition. Today, that proud 200-year tradition of challenge and opportunity con- tinues to flourish throughout the Navy. Opportunity that lets qualified young men and women secure the future with training in one of over 70 career fields. There’s even the Navy Campus For Achievement, a program that lets young people resume or continue their college or technical education while in the Navy—and after. Why not build your future on a proud tradition? See your Navy recruiter. He can tell you what you qualify for before you enlist. Or call 800-841-8000 anytime. It’s toll-free. BMC George R.
