Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1971 volume:

After forty-two dedicated years of teaching, the last ten spent in hard work as the Utopian Advisor, Mr. Ivan J. Sargent is retiring. This will indeed be a great loss of experience to future yearbooks at this school, but the knowledge and wisdom gained by all the past staffs who worked with him will be remembered and passed on to others in the true spirit of brotherhood. It is for this that The Friends of Distinction dedicate their yearbook to you. ADMINISTRATION tyruL .LISTENING •SPEAKING FACULTY SPEAKING LISTENING.-' I Administration Mr. Paul Rowland has finished another year of being our Union Area High School Principal. Our school nurse, Mrs. Henrietta Zaccarelli, is shown taking Bob Wil- son's blood pressure. To acquire this skill she attended St. Francis Hospital in New Castle. Not only does she attend to any discomforts or health problems we students encounter, but she also is a very capable advisor of our Careers in Health Club. Cafeteria Staff The women who take care of preparing our lunches are: Seated: Mrs. Fobion, Mrs. Choiro. and Mrs. Deiger. Standing: Mrs. Bodnar, Mrs. Lynch, and Mrs. Smock. 12 Pictured here ore the four senior class officers: Seated is Jule Smith, secretary. Standing are: Kathy Smith, Vice-President; Richard Wood- ring. President; and Bab Wilson, Treasurer. They are at rest at the left, but all year they could be found constantly moving in order to keep things running smoothly in the Senior Clast. They devoted a large part of their year so that the whale senior group would benefit in its final months as a doss. These are probably the first and last moments that a group of 150 people begin to realize that their days as a class are numbered. At this time of the year we stop and think of all our trite problems, of all our first loves, and of all our ac- complishments. These few lines cannot contain all the unforgettable experiences and emotions. We were so very young when we began in 1959. Most of us started back in the Scotland buildings. We shared little boy and little girl feelings with each other through the greater part of our first six years. Though we were immature, the delicate little fragments that would make us into a class had started to develop. In the fall of 1965, we made the great move from the elementary to the junior high school. We pulled together from many other schools and formed the Class of '71. We participated in intramural sports and followed our school teams to the end. In 9th grade, we demonstrated our athletic awareness as we went to Pittsburgh in basketball playoffs. Near the latter half of 1968, we stepped across to the Senior high wing and firmly implanted ourselves after nine years of hard work and decisions. We elected Jim Mastropietro as President; Bernie Lepri as Vice-President; Kathy Smith, Secre- tary; and Keith Taylor as Treasurer. We sold Sophomore Sweets and started uniting the funds that we would need in our next two years. Soon we became Juniors and we competed not as 150 individuals, but as a single unit. Our class officers were: Bernie Lepri, President; Kathy Smith, Vice-President; Richard Woodring, Secretary; and Jim Mastropietro, Treasurer. We were very successful with our Magazine Sale. With our funds, we produced a play, called U.T.B.U. , and we sponsored the prom Romeo Juliet for the Seniors. We had to overcome obstacles, but the Prom was held and with great success. And then the fall of '70. There we were, after eleven long years, preparing to finish out our career. The days came and went, but all too fast. We presented the Sr. Class Play, Our Town , which displayed the various talents of a large group. We planned for our graduation, senior trip, and All-Night Party. We proved in our last few months that we were worthy of being called a class. And now our year is almost at an end. All that we have learned and retained must now begin where our high school education ends. Each of us takes with us not only 12 years, but the experiences of those multiplied by 150. Here we separate, but we will always have these years—to think back and remember. M Kathy Smith Gladys R. Alley Gladys Concert Choir 10 11 12 Pep Club 11 12 Teenettes 10 11 12 Barbara J. Unnur came to us almost one year ago, unsure of anything about American living. She made her home with Sandra Wardman and her parents. Sandy was a junior at Union. Unnur found America very much to her liking. I will never forget my year spent at Union and all the wonderful friends and times I've received here. I was proud to be included in all your activities and I enjoyed all the football and basketball games. Everyone here has made me feel at home all the time, even though I am many miles away from it. All I can say is thank you for helping me make a place at Union High School We at Union wish Unnur the best of luck in her years to come and we wish to add that it has been both a pleasure and a wonderful experience having her be a part of Union. This is Unnur in her native costume of Iceland in her own home. Unnur enjoyed the Senior Trip as well os her two friends, Berme and Donna. Unnur is dressed for the Jr.-Sr. Prom and her date was Carlos, from Argentina. Unnur stayed at the home of Sandy Wordmon, her American sister. 34 Some liked their meal, tome didn't, but the view was excellent. What's in the bag boys? Hope it isn't too explosive! Senior Trip Niagara! Things like braving the pounding water of Niagara at the risk of getting soaked, playing innocent games on buses, and being florists for the trip home with bunches of flowers, all added up to a great way to spend Monday, June 7. Even though the buses were an hour and a half late, and the threat of rain overshadowed the entire day, the senior's trip will long be remembered by those se- niors who made it a memorable day. No, Dee Dee isn't weird, just different, as was most everybody during he bus ride. 35 Senior Personalities Best All Around Laurie Stewart and Bob Wilson Best Personality Richard Woodring and Jule Smith Best Dressed Ralph Currie ond Rhonda Nelson Wittiest Chuck Retort and Connie Lombardo Best Looking Joe Gierlach ond Gayle Morgon Most Talkative Kathy Smith and Chuck Retort 36 Class Daydreomers: Glen Groy and Marilyn Squeglia. This night was one that we are sure never to forget. The meaning of Commencement is the beginning and this evening marked the beginning of new experiences for these seniors who are now known as the Graduates of 1971. Th« seniors march down the aisles and get ready to get their diplomas. This was a very serious moment in the lives of each and every senior. Mr Gerald Newton was the speaker for Commencement Exercises and he spoke on the topic, S.A.E. He was a very interesting speaker and was well received by the near-Groduates. 40 Joni Dudek provided the parents and grandparents of the graduates with beautiful music. I om sure that it was very well received and the school will miss her next year. Unnur Vladimirsdottir came to Union this year as an exchange student from Iceland. Here she is receiving her diploma from Mr. Rowland and Mr. Fusco. We enjoyed her company this year and wish her good luck always. This picture shows all kinds of emotion that can be shown over graduating. Marilyn is so happy she is crying, Mary Kay is grasping her diploma like she will never let it go, and Donna is overjoyed at having completed her high school education. As you can readily see, these are six of our most studious and scholarly students. From the looks on their face you can tell that they ore planning to become college professors. 41 All Night Party This is the last time that the Senior Class as whole were together. The party, which started at 10:30 and ended at 5 in the morning, was certainly a success. Everyone en- joyed the music and the gifts being given out kept every- one awake. Each Senior received some token of the eve- ning and grand prizes were won near the close of the party. The food was great and I'm sure all Seniors will agree that their parents did a terrific job in creating this evening. Greg just couldn't seem to get thot tucker into Kit mouth—mutt be tomething in the air. Poor Berniel It watn't hit fault that the ventriloquitt did tuch a mognificent job in entertaining everyone. Didn't Unnur look nice? All couplet enjoyed the mutic. 42 Thete ore the guyt thot did to much to keep everyone awake and lively. They're called The Everyday People' but you certainly don't meet tuch great guyt everyday. Agree? Managing the school yearbook after a year of financing, co- managers Donna Montobon and Paul Krueger have seen enough dollar signs and decimal points to last them a lifetime. The members of this year's editorial staff are, seated, left to right: Mary Ann Kirharski, Judy Cox, Marilyn Walters, Donna Terronova, Mary Joe Dudek, Gloria Booth, Mary Kay Olbrys, Jonie Dudek. There was no chance though, as he sweated out all the dead- lines, just as he's done for the past 9 years. The job of yearbook advisor is not just one of guidance. Mr. Sargent has provided the motivation for the books' completion for a long time now and it is our regret that he has com- pleted his service with this year's book. We can only thank him and say we're glad he hung on with us this long, because we don't know what we would have done without him. Our vice-president Karen Cifra was recording secretary in the region and served extremely well in that ca- pacity at the Regional Fall Convention at Mohawk Area High School and the spring convention at Grove City College. In the spring the club again was allowed to cadet teach at the elementary school. This is where the prospective teachers get first hand ex- perience in dealing with the work of a teach- er. The invaluable guidance this club can give the teacher-to-be is the reason for its large and active membership. It is a club that will continue to exist long after the graduate members shown here have become teachers. Guided by veteran advisor Miss Ruth Dickey, the club was led by; President, Andy Naples; Vice-Presi dent, Karen Cifra,- Secretary, Judy Co ; Treasurer, Marilyn Squeglia; and Junior Vice-President, Cindy Emery. Also contributing much to the paper's success were Mary Jo Dudek, the Business Manager; David Wysocki, Sports and Photography Editor; and chief critic, cut-up, censor and advisor all rolled into one, Mr. Sam Venturella. NHS If there were one word that could be used to signify this club, it would have to be awareness . Throughout this past year, the club has showed its awareness of the needs of school by opening a student book store, and the educational advantage of such a move has proven to equal its recreational value. By again building the Christmas float for P.A.R.C, and entertaining the people at the county home, our aware- ness of the needs of the community has been shown. A job of fine leadership has been displayed through this year's officers under the fine guidance of the advisors. But the overall success of this year's club must be attributed to the dedication, hard work, and most of all, the awareness of each and every member. Members of N.H.S. or os follows. The quartets were busy all over Christmas performing for various dinners and organizations and the entire choir performed several times in outside appearances. Homecoming 1970 A clear, beautiful October night set the perfect atmosphere for our annual Homecoming ceremonies. The brisk air and the starlit skies added a special touch to the memories of the queen and her court. At the arrival of the half, the Union High School Marching Band marched out onto the field to the tune of Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. As the court was introduced, the girls were escorted from the cars to their positions, anxiously awaiting the crowning of the queen. Finally, the climax of the evening spiraled with the crowning of Charlene Fraley as the 1970-71 Homecoming Queen. Amid the tears of joy and the cheering crowd, the crown was placed on Charlene's head by Marianne Buckley, the 1969-70 Homecoming Queen. With the crown, Charlene also received a bouquet of roses and a football with the team's signatures on it. To top off the even- ing, Charlene was given a royal seal of approval by all as she rode around the field to the melody of Close to You. The many couples who attended the prom really en- joyed the decorations and the band.
