Vice-President and Mr. James Kerr. President. Standing Mr. Russell Bowers. Mr. Paul Rice, Secretary; Mr. William Duff. Mr. Nicholas Squelio, Mrs. Issabelle Bartley. Mr. Andrew Semonsky. Mr. Clayton Houk, Supervising Principal; and Mr. Morris Bernstine. Missing from the picture is Mr. Philip Clark. During the week of November 18 through the 21st, Union Area High School had the privilege of being evaluated. The evaluation lasted three days in which they observed and discussed the curriculum of the students, the facilities in which we work, and the administration body. They came into our classes and observed our work and textbooks and talked to several students on how they felt about the school. A lot of hard work went into the preparation and plan- ning of this evaluation. We are certainly proud of what our school has accomplished. We all hope the news will be coming back soon from Philadelphia saying that we have been accepted as an accredited school. Mr. Rowland it welcoming the Evaluator to Union Area High School. The gentleman on hit left it Mr. Jamet I. Hytong, Chairman and the other it Mr. Donald G. Cloypool who it the Attittant Chairman. The member of the Evaluation Team are. row 1: Mrt. Eltie Calhoun. Mr. Harry Beitsch. 4 Administration Mr. Jock Boggs, our Senior High Guidance Counselor, has really helped the students prepare not only for college but also for careers in the armed service or ony other trade. Mr. Paul Rowland has been our Union Area High School Principal for four years. He supervises over the school and handles the financial aspects of our school. The most important body in the school which helps make the school so successful is the admin- istration. They do many important jobs that help keep this school running so smoothly. Mr. Houk just doesn't have the problem of one school, but of three schools. Mr. Rowland and Mr. Calabrese together keep things under order at the High School. Mr. Boggs and Miss Bodnar help the students in a more personal way by helping them in any problems that might come about in school or at home. They all have done a fine job and we would like to say thank-you for giving us this great opportunity of education. Miss Jamis Bodnar, the Junior High Guidance Counselor, helps the Junior high students in scheduling classes and helps them in any other problems that may come up during the year. Mr. Houk, who is the Supervising Principal, is always busy keeping our school running and giving advice to the teachers. Mr. Calabrese is in his second year of being an efficient Assistant Principal. Many of us do not realize it, but he has one of the hardest jobs to do. 5 Secretaries Hard ot work is Mrs. Penwell, Mr. Rowland's efficient secretary. Without the help of Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Boggs would find himself swamped with paper work. The newest member of our secretarial staff is Mrs. Russo, who is the hard working secretary of Mr. Calabrese. Absorbed in her job as assistant bookkeeper, Mrs. Pakovich won't even take time to smile for our camera. V renski worked diligently for Mr. Calabrese during the course of the first semester. Mrs. Ingham is seldom seen by the students but busy as Union's business secretary. 6 Faculty Mr D I. Whenever we were in need of medical attention, we could always count on her to be there. Mrs. Zoccorella is also an advisor for the Future Nurses of America and the members get a first hand report on the different aspects of nursing. Memories M A senior's lost year is his or her most memorable one. This is the year that school-acquaintances are treasured most. It is for this reason that the senior class was so proud of their 1969-70 officers. They are, Clara Boron, Treasurer; Carla Nelson, Vice-President; Nick Squeglia, President; and Maryann Buckley, Secre- tary. It was under the leadership of these four people that the plans for the annual senior trip and their All-Night Party were made. The officers, along with the rest of the class, worked tediously, hand-in-hand with each other to make this year their greatest success yet. wave of nostalgia seems to sweep across the class of '70, we find ourselves reaching backward into the past, recalling cherished and priceless memories. Our twelve years at Union have finally come to close, and what once seemed like an impossible dream has now become a reality. That seemingly endless, trying, road has been traveled; but let us retrace our journey and recall first of all 'Se fall of 1958. Remember how scared and unsure of ourselves we were then? But we soon changed, however, as we played and learned and worked our way, until, before we knew it we were in the sixth grade. Who can ever forget the feeling of pride and importance that we possessed as we wore our hats and ribbons. And then, with some doubts and fears that soon vanished, we took our first big step into seventh grade. It was here, for the first time, that we started to feel like a class. Sports began to play an important part in our lives as we learned and appreciated what school spirit was. We began to make our mark in Union's history, and, before we knew it, three years had passed; and we found ourselves as members of the senior high. As sophomores, we elected officers for the first time. Our first leaders were Carol Bernstine as President; Vice-President, Gary Cervone; Secretary, Carla Nelson; and Clara Boron as Treasurer. It was during this year that we became salesmen and held a successful candy sale in order to raise money for the prom that we would be presenting next year, and can you remember the class party with the theme of Bonnie and Clyde? Juniors got rolling under the leadership of the new class officers with Dave Frazier as President; Vice-President, Gary Cervone; Secretary, Carla Nelson; and Nick Squeglia as Treasurer. With the prom coming soon, we all worked hard selling magazines to raise more money. It was not all work and no play, however. Who can ever forget our successful play The Perfect Idiot ? After the play came the prom. With the theme of This Magic Moment , plenty of planning, hardwork, headaches, and some fun, we transformed the gym into a South Sea island, making our prom one of the best. The year came to an end, and, as we watched Dave Frazier accept the key to the class, we realized that our days at Union were rapidly drawing to an end. Seniors at last, and once again we learned what school spirit was, as our football team fought on to capture the Tri- County Football Championship. Again the versatility of our class was shown when we presented A Portrait of Jennie. We got our rings, exchanged pictures, and planned for our senior trip to Niagara Falls, and before we knew it, the calendar read June 4th, 1970. That long awaited day was here at last. Amid tears of joy and sadness, we congratulated each other for making it in twelve years. Yes, memories, we found them in the pages of our minds . . . And now, with misty eyes, as we reach for these memories of the past, let us also reach out for the future, which is ours. Class History Now we are reaching back for memories through the pages of our minds . . . Early on the Wednesday morning of May 26, a hundred happy seniors embarked on their trip to Niagara Falls. No senior will ever forget the fun and nutty times they shared. We toured the Ameri- can Falls, Robert Moses Power Plant, and who can ever forget what we did at Fort Niagara. Remem- ber our traveling band. They were so fabulous, that they were asked to perform at the awards assembly. We had the most excitement going through customs. Poor Chago went through the third degree. Almost everyone was hiding fire crackers of some kind and were on edge, especial- ly Jackie. When the customs officers asked Jackie where she was born, she replied, I don't have any, honest! It' three cheer and a hug for our bus driver Chago and Miss Rentz kept things lively on Bus No. 2. 30 . When I start to think about everything I did with you and I'll never live it again, something runs through me and I want to start all over again. Moreover, the time is gone, nothing can stop it, and the only excitement is to remember —remember and dream it. Finally, I want to thank you for the great work you did for me in this special year of 1970. You will always have a space in the deepest part of my heart with all the sweetness and happiness that I took from you. Affectionately, Chago Chago made a great companion on the Senior Trip. Chago was an asset to our school's musical enjoyment. At graduation, Chogo was just as sad to go as we were to lose him. But Mr. Roussos probably had trouble getting out his name—Santiago Senundo Salgado Henrequez. 31 Senior Ann Buckley. MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Dove Frazier and Cathy Emery. Here we see the graduates for the last time as students, for in a short while they will have become alumni. All the knowledge gained during the previous 12 year period must now be used for attaining higher achievement in the fu- ture. Graduation 1970 36 As Mr. Roussos announced the nomes of the 1970 graduates, they walked ocross the stoge and re- ceived their diploma from School Board President, James Kerr. The graduates then transferred their tas- sels from their right to left and they left the stage as alumni of Union Area High School. Mr. Roussos adjusts caps only minutes before the seniors were ready to march into the auditorium. We did itf Here stand the seniors in the receiving line moments after gradua- tion. Tears of joy and sorrow, or perhaps even tears of relief were shed by many. None of the 117 seniors of the Class of '70' will ever forget this night. Smiles everywhere you look. After twelve long, hard years of work, we had only a few precious minutes left before we became alumni. We, os se- niors, will always remember our days at U.H.S. 37 Steve woj one of the mony seniors who won door prizes. All Night Party Everyone crowded the dance floor to donee to the music of St. James Ploce. After the band left at four, seniors provided their own music as they grouped around the piano. One of their projects was sponsoring a magazine sale which was really a great success. The proceeds from this sale were used to help purchase the decorations for the Prom. This class must really be commended for the fine job they did to make this Prom a memorable one. The Juniors also sold Scottie Dogs to help furnish their senior trip. G. Alley K. Anneralla B. You mean you don't know how to get to the office! I got a toy boat, what you'd get? Let me see now that's 32 with everything, 10 with mustord and onions . . . 46 Activities As you approach Union High School, the first thing that meets your eye is the information of coming events on the school's bulletin board located on the front lawn. There's never any reason for not knowing what activities are when, because you're always kept well informed. This bulletin board was changed periodically by Lorraine Stevens, Carolyn Cummings, and Marlene Semansky. These girls did an excellent job this past year and we owe them a fine job done. Student Council raised the money for this project by selling Scottie Banks which were supplied by the Lawrence Saving and Trust Corporation. For weeks at a time, the Council representatives canvassed the schools and the township trying to reach their goal. The bank sale turned out to be o great success and soon afterwards, the sign was built. With interchangeable letters, the possibilities of various announcements is unbelievable. Activities from track meets to the Junior-Senior Prom, from Congratulations Tri-County Champs to only 2 more days seniors were posted on the bulletin board for everyone to see. But what everyone, especially the se- niors, really remembers best were the two words, Congratulations, Tim for placing No. 1 in shot put in the State Track Meet on May 23rd. This just goes to show that nothing was left out when it came to announcements. Up until last year, our school somehow seemed incomplete. Now as you drive down Wilson Drive and the high school comes in sight, the sign jumps out and as if to say, Welcome to Union! It may not seem like much to strangers but to the students of Union, it's their sign of identity. Many thanks to the Student Council for their hard work and effort in raising the money needed and making it possible to complete our high school. Now there's no one to blame for having an ill-informed public. With this sign you can't help but know what's going on. The Union Area Jr.-Sr. High School bulletin board is a part of our Alma Mater so keep those announcements coming! 47 Utopian Staff Smile, Click! There goes another picture for the Utopian. Flashes were seen throughout the building, as the Utopian Staff rushed from one end of the school to the other seek- ing the camera shy. Skipping supper and staying all hours of the night, were the Utopian members trying to meet their deadline. Still we all had fun as we picnicked in the empty corridors. Mr. Sargent was the faithful Utopian Ad- visor as he diligently worked approving the pages and promoting candy sales. Their first ma- jor project was the Boots Bell Dance with Boots Bell, him- self, as the disc jockey. Their second major project, as al- ways, was the Christmas dance entitled Winter Magic. Both dances, on the whole, were supported wholeheartedly by the student body and were tremendous successes. But without the efforts and hard work of each individual mem- ber, they wouldn't have been possible. In April, our school bustled with excitement as registration and the casting of ballots for new Council officers was held. The result was electrifying as the great responsibility fell on the shoulders of Union High School's future leaders. Thi year i Student Council contained the element of leadership as (seated) Roseann Piscuineri, Recording Secretary; Laurie Stewart, Vice- President; Cathy Emery, Secretary; (standing) David Frazier, President; Gory Cervone, Treasurer, and Mr. James Warnock, Advisor, led the representatives pictured below in a successful year. Senior representatives of the Council ore, Cathy Emery (12-6), Roseann Piscuineri (12-C), Nick Squeglia (12-D), and Gary Cervone (12-A). It wos up to these four members to set exomples for the Student Council of the future. Junior members of Student Council ore, Judy Dover (11-B), Kathy Smith (11-E), Andy Naples (11-D), Rocky DeMosse (11 A), and Paul Krueger (11-C). They worked diligently throughout the year in hopes of making next year's Council better. The Sophomore representatives this yeor are. Sherry Myers (10 D), Mary Jo Dudek (10-B), Candy Carpenter (10-A), Fred Miscomorra (10-C), and Dennis Wysocki (10 E). These students were thought to be the quiet ones at the meetings but when there wos work to be done, they were always ready to lend a helping hand. 50 The active and energetic members of the AF$ Club this year are, row 1: N. The Teenettes, under the supervision of Mrs. Butts, partici- pate in many activities during the year. In the fall, at Thanksgiving time, they made food baskets and distrib- uted them throughout the township to the needy families. The Teenette initiation started off with a smash when we were all blindfolded and led to a bucket full of a mass of messy, mushy eggs, and to top it off we got an egg shampoo. We had to go through tortures in eating strained spinach, drinking buttermilk from a bottle, and ending up with a face full of shaving lotion. Even though we looked like a disaster area, we left with a smile, but it didn't last long for the next day we had to come to school with hair nets, pillow cases, rolled down knee- socks, and be ready to salute any senior that may pass by. This is a great achievement because one must be very qualified to sing in this chorus. Honors Choir was held this year at Westmin- ster College on February 14. Joni also participated in the Mid-West District Choir, which was held at Riverside High School on January 22, 23, and 24. Homecoming As Marianne Christy, the 1968-69 Homecoming queen, crowns Mary Ann Buckley, the 1969 70 Homecoming queen, Mary seems to be in a world of her own bubbling with surprise, excitement ond happiness. Her escort, John Budai, seems just os excited as he looks on. This Homecoming was the Half- time feature of the Union vs. Neshannock game. The team gave the queen and her court a hard fought, 6 point victory over the Lancers. Mary Ann smiles warmly as she is driven around the field after her crown- ing. As Homecoming queen, she participated in the Sports Show with other area queens, and was chosen as queen of the Sports Show. 1969 78 Boots Bell Comes to Union I could hove danced all night, if only you hod kept off my feet! Boots Bell appeared in Union's gym on Friday, No- vember 7th, to pay a special tribute to our Tri-County Football Champs. It seemed Boots knew some inter- esting facts about some of our players that weren't well-known before the dance. Sorry team, there must have been a spy in the locker room. This dance was sponsored by Student Council for grades seven through twelve. Everyone danced to the top tunes and to some especially lucky kids, Boots gave albums. Good Guy , Boots Bell Watch and I'll show you how it's really done! It was hard to believe it when the clock struck eleven. Time flies when you are having a great time, as I'm sure everyone did. If you didn't, it was certainly your own fault! This dance was a great success and Student Council should be proud of a job well done. 79 A very successful Christmas Dance was sponsored by Stu- dent Council on December 20, 1969. We danced to the music of the Illusions which created a fabulous atmo- sphere for the Christmas season. Carla Nelson was chosen as queen and Cindy Hannon and Kathy Annarella made up her court. This evening will long be remembered by everyone who attended. Winter Magic Our chaperones, although they didn't do much dancing, spent an enjoyable evening tolking and watching us dance. The members of Student Council worked hard to add o touch of Winter Magic to our school cafeteria. The climax to a wonderful evening came when Mr. Calabrese disappeared as Santa Claus mysteriously appeared. Santa had a condy cone for all and was jolly and full of the spirit of Christmas. 80 After leaving the dance floor the punch tasted refreshing. Everyone enjoyed dancing beneath the hary shy of pastels. Add another memory to reoch back for in the years to come. Heaven The dance floor is always full when a slow song is played. This yeor the music was provided by the Graduates. Marlene Semansky beams radiantly as she receives her roses. A Little Bit of Teenette Queen, Marlene Semonsky with her escort Bill Ash, views her court which consists of. From the top: Senior Cathy Emery escorted by Dave Frazier, Senior Wilda Columbus escorted by Alan Grimes, Junior Patty Morgan escorted by Howard Funk- houser. Junior Nancy Ash escorted by Mike Book, Sophomore Donna Terrnova escorted by David Fox and Sophomore Cindy Emery escorted by Neil Mastropietro. 81 A Time for Us The 1970 members of the Prom Court ore. Juniors: Kathy Solomon, Bob Wilson; Gayle Morgan, Richard Woodring; Charlene Fraley, Greg Magno. The 1969 King, Joe Chiafullo. The new King and Queen are Mike Padula and Mary Ann Buckley. The 1969 Queen was Michele Covelli. Seniors: Clara Boron, Tim Homey; Kathy Chioro, Steve Muchicko; Susan Alick, Lou Cassella. The court stood beneath the walls of a towering castle. As the couples entered the school, they crossed a small bridge and into the enchanted court-yard of Romeo and Juliet. From this court-yard a draw- bridge opened the way into a 16th century world of yesterday. Mike and Mary Ann were certainly a royal couple. 82 The royal couple danced to the music of the Three Rivers Blues Band, whose music always kept the dance floor crowded. This beautiful garden was placed in the center of the dance floor. These pillars reminded us of the Italian setting of the world of Romeo and Juliet. A Time For Us was the theme for the 1970 Junior-Se- nior Prom. Bruce McKibben and Chris Farrone were the two hard-working co-chairmen who organized this entire prom. Somehow the class of 1971 miraculously changed the high school gym into an enchanted wonderland that would have made even Romeo and Juliet feel at home. Miss Lupo is one person that these juniors can never thank enough. She was always busy and gave up most of her free time to make this prom the success that it was. Mrs. Sartor and her student teacher. Miss Hogland, did an ex- cellent job with the art work and murals. The last finish- ing touches were completed at seven o'clock the night of the prom. At eight o'clock the kids, who had been deco- rating in jeans and sweat shirts, had been transformed al- so into elegant couples. He took a first place at University Pork by putting the shot 56' His junior year he com- peted in the junior Olympics and ploced 6th. Congratulations to a hard working athlete. This year's track team didn't set the world on fire, but with a 5-3 record they're getting warm. The track teams in the past took ten years to win five meets. This year's team has two great leaders: Jim Horney, who went to the Junior Olympics last year and went to the state finals this year, threw the shot between 54 and 57 feet and Don Hasson, the other senior, did an out- standing job in the hurdles and on the high jump. His best jump was 5' 10 . Chago, the foreign exchange student from Chile, also was a member of the track team. He did not place, but he worked hard and the team really enjoyed having him there. Next year with a hurdler like Gary Hare, who took second in the high and low hurdles at the Tri-County meet, well have a win- ner to start with. Bob Wilson, another junior, likes to jump and he does it well. He holds the school record in the long jump with a jump of 20'3 . He also placed second in the Tri-County meet and third in the triple jump. Another junior is Dave Ayers who also throws the shot. He took fifth in the Tri-County meet and with some hard work he could possibly reach Horney's record. These juniors and silent sophomores have a lot to look forward to next year. Track is going to be a big thing at Union—watch and see. Don Hasson this year took 7 first and 1 sec- ond in the dual meets. He took first in the Tri -County meet and third at the District meet. 97 Baseball Row 1: B. McKnight, J. Bump, F. Miscamara, B. Rouman, D. Mrozek, G. Kwolek, D. Vrobel, and G. Commesso. Row 2: S. We look around ond ask —where did it go? We worked, we ployed —but for twelve years? Then we look the other way —into tomorrow. Suddenly we're not so tall os we thought we were And not so smart. But we find that somehow We learned o decisive lesson at Union: something we wouldn't have had without the Administration ond Faculty, without friendship and understanding —a direction into that uncertain tomorrow. It can never be so dark again Though the world may change and the times may change and we change. The Semi-Finals re- sulted with six students becoming the victors: Richard Ames, John Dodejko, Dave Lawrence, John Murski, Cindy O'Leary and Terry Rogan. The finals were held on Thursday, May 28, 1970 with the six students competing for b first and second place award. After asking 200 questions, Mr. Pascarella awarded a trophy for first place won by John Murski and the Davis Medal for second place won by Cindy O'Leary. Struck in bronze, the medal bears the portrait of Charles Palmer Davis the publishing pioneer who brought the first class-room-centered newspaper into American Schools. This is the first time any student from Union Junior High School has won this award. Due to the many conflicts existing world-wide, Mr. Pascarella believes it is of the utmost necessity to understand the world environ- ment. The U S. is no longer isolated from his Eastern Hemisphere neighbor, the importance of the Eastern and Western Hemisphere con- nection needs to be understood. Mr. Pascarella is presenting John Murski with his first place trophy. Mr. Pascarella is presenting Cindy O'Leary with the second place award. Her award was the Davis Medal. 133 Sept.-Oct.-Nov.-Dec. 134 Jan.-Feb.-Mar.-Apr.-May-Jun. 135
