Board of Education Pictured above are Union Township School Board Members- Seated: Mr. Nicholas Squeg- lia, Mr. John Fusco, Mr. Russell Bowers, Mrs. Isabelle Bartley, Supervising Principal Clay- ton Houk, and Mr. Philip Clark. Standing: Mr. Morris Bernstine, Mr. James Kerr, Mr. Edward Carr, and Mr. Paul Rice. Missing from the pic- ture are Mr. Andrew Semansky and Mr. Leon- ard Mauney. At the left is the hard-working President of the School Board. Mr. Russell Bowers. Below are pictured Vice-President Mrs. Isabelle Bartley, and Secretary Mr. Paul Rice. The School Board was responsible for the purchase of our beautiful new band uni- forms. No one realizes how many hours are put in by these people - many thanks! Administration An Administrator’s work is never done. Mr. Clayton Houk, Mr. Paul Rowland, and Mr. Jack Boggs are the three busi- est people in Union Area High School. Mr. Houk must supervise three schools with their various problems. Mr. Rowland sees that we get the best possible education through our teach- ers and classroom facilities. Mr. Boggs plans schedules for some nine hun- dred-odd students every year. In addi- tion to these mentioned, our Adminis- trators have countless other responsi- bilities. These loads are heavy, and to bear them in such a fine way deserves much credit. Running a school system is no small job. Education is perhaps the most important field in our time, for from education comes knowledge; and knowledge is the key that will unlock the doors of poverty, ignorance, dis- ease. and the other problems the world faces to let in the light. Our Ad- ministrators’ jobs are quiet jobs. They are not rewarded for their work with medals or shouting crowds. They are rewarded by seeing us make the world a better place through the knowledge that they have had a part in giving us. Mr. Clayton Houk. the Supervising Principal of all Union Area Schools, is our busiest Administrator Our High School Principal is Mr. Paul L. Rowland. This is his second year with us. Mr. Jack Boggs is the hardworking Guidance Counselor who helps us toward a bright future. 9 Secretaries Shown above are the secretaries that stu- dents see humming around the office. Mrs. Palmer is Mr. Rowland's secretary. The cheery voice we hear over the loudspeaker each morning is hers. Mrs. Penwell is the busi- ness secretary. She usually is there to answer any questions and help club treasurers make out their deposit or warrant slips. Mrs. Morgan is Mr. Boggs' efficient secretary, handling any questions concerning college. To the right is pictured Mr. Houk's secretary, Mrs. Lois Woodring, who works in the elementary build- ing. Below her is Mrs. Clara Ingham, our Book- keeper and secretary to the Board Secretary. Also pictured is Mrs. Elsie Palkovich, assis- tant bookkeeper. These women are often be- hind the scene, but deserve much credit for all the work they do. 10 Our cafeteria women serve appetizing meals during four lunch periods each day Shown here taking a time-out arejwlrs. Our school nurse Mrs. Henrietta Zaccarelli not only man- aged to survive all the eye and ear tests, but also the annual TB shots. Mrs. Zaccarelli also acted as an advisor to the Future Nurses' Club this year. These men and women custodi- ans work hard to keep our school clean and in top condition. They are Mr. William Helsel, who teaches Senior English and Literature; Mr. Robert Curry, who teaches Junior English and Literature;' Miss Josephine Funari, who teaches Soph- omore English and Literature; Miss Mary Ann Craig, who teaches ninth grade Eng- lish; Mrs. Shirley Hall, who teacnes eighth grade English; and Mrs. Frances Butts, who teaches seventh grade English. An addition to our English program is Reading and Language Arts, taught by Mrs. Laurie Canady. A necessity for any school is a library, and ours is under the capable management of Mr. W. Donald Logan. Our deepest gratitude goes to these instruc- tors for their guidance throughout our high school careers. +- Mrs. Frances Butts Mr. W. Donald Logan 12 Mr. Ivan J. Speech classes this year are under the direction of Mrs. Gwenith Nash. ‘Watch out for the other guy!’ is watchword of Mr. John Takacs, our fearless Driver Training and Safety Education instructor. The different fields represented here are but a part of the varied as- pects of life. 15 Mr. Harvey Lucidore Mr. Henry Krupa Mr. Eugene Beichner Mr. Robert Burchett Mrs. Winifred Sartar Where would the world be without culture? Each one of these instructors en- rich our lives with a differ- ent phase of culture. Mr. Harvey Lucidore. as cho- ral director, and Mr. Henry Krupa. as band director, show us the world of mu- sic. Mr. Eugene Beichner, head of the metal shop, and Mr. Robert Burchett, head of the wood shop, instruct us in the Indus- trial Arts. Mrs. Winifred Sartar helps develop our talents in the many phases of Art. As we learn more, and become older, we find that we, too. have a place in the world along with culture. 16 The instructors on this page have much to do with shaping our futures. Mr. Micheal Covelli and Mrs. Dorothy Colton share the job of keeping us physically rit through our gym classes. Mrs. Lydia Gate- wood and Mr. Richard Hart impress upon us the importance of good health. Mrs. Brenda Draper and Mrs. Louise Davis instruct many girls in the domestic arts of cooking and sewing. Mr. David Seamans and Mr. Edward Martsolf give boys a future through a challenging and rewarding career: Agriculture. We owe these and all our teachers a great debt which we can never repay. 17 Officers of the Senior Class who led the class through their final year were: President Joe Chiaro, Vice-President Chuck Morrison, Secretary Nancy Walton, and Treasurer Paul DeLeone. Seniors were directed in a U.S. Flag Selling Campaign to raise money for their trip by the officers. The offi- cers were also in charge of the All Night Party. How can we forget the twelve short years that most of us have shared together? It really isn’t hard to remember the beginning of the Class of '68. That first day in September '56. we were one hundred small individuals trying to sit still until it was time to go home. For most of us. our first six years were spent at Union, but some still attended Sunny Avenue and.Edinburg Schools. But, no matter what school you were at, you still had jack tournaments, monkey bars, swings, see- saws to keep you busy. Then in fifth grade, we suddenly moved from the elementary building into the Scotland Building. That was where we spent our final year in grade school. We could hardly wait until the end of the year when we could buy our hats and ribbons. We were finally ready to make our first big move the move into Junior High. When we got to seventh grade, we were no longer many individuals, but we became five home- rooms competing against each other. During our Junior High Days, we stowed a lot of promise in the athletic fields. We were so busy being active in everything possible that we were really surprised when the time finally came to move across the building to the Senior High Wing. The many individuals, the five competing homerooms, were finally organized as the Sophomore Class Our first leaders were President Gary Gatto, Vice-President Joe Chiaro. Secretary Marlene Magno, and Treasurer Mark Mamfrang We embarked upon our first class money raising project. The Sophomore Class Candy Sale. This project helped to unify our class even more. It was during our Sophomore year that we realized that our remaining years at Union were ndeed numbered. As proud Juniors we forged ahead ready for almost anything, but always in awe of the Senior Class of '67. Receiving our class rings brought us one step closer to our closing days at Union. Our Junior year was filled with excitement about our first play. “Nothing But The Truth was a big suc- cess that took a lot of hard work and a lot of worry to produce Grecian Gardens was the theme of our Junior-Senior Prom. It was held in the Cathedral and the decorations were bought with the money that we raised during the Junior Magazine Sales. Our big- gest moment was when the Class of '67 .told us good bye and gave us the school Key. marking the start of our Senior careers • . A proud group of Seniors entered Union in the fall for the last time. We were saddened because after so many years together, some of our classmates were leaving to study at the new Vo-Tech school that was opening in Lawrence County. But they still belonged to Union, and they showed it by taking an active part in our athletic events. Our final year was led by President Joe Chiaro, Vice- President Chuck Morrison, Secretary Nancy Walton, and Treasurer Paul DeLeone. After having an outstanding football Season, we t ecame the Section 20 Champs m basketball. Once again we were called upon to produce an award-winning play The Monkey’s Paw was the highlight of the winter. The second semester flew by with Groovy. Sock it to me. Very Interest- ing. Tiny Tim , and a large array of other sayings. Before we knew it the Prom had come and Gone With the Wind. The flag campaign, the making of plans for our trip tc Harrisburg. Hershey, and Get- tysburg. remembrances of the Continentals of '68. the receiving of our navy and white dinks-these events filled our remaining cheris hed moments at Union. The climax to twelve memorable years came on June 4. 1968. This was the long awaited day of promise. And finally that day ended too. As we left the bunding for the last time as students of Union High School, we sadly but proudly said good bye to our Alma Mater. There are many, many more «things that we will never forget about our days at Union. We want to thank all of our teachers for helping us reach this important step in our careers. We will never forget our Senior Class advisors Mr. William Helsel, Mr. Socrates Roussos, Mr. Raymond Zarlengo. and Miss Carrie Mae Rentz who will always hold a special place in dbr hearts. Fantasy in Frost February 24 was the date of “Fantasy in Frost, the Teenette Formal. A bridge over an icy pool led into a fantasy of glowing white and blue twists of crepe paper, artfully hung to frost the room. The decoration committee certainly deserves praise for a job well done. Everyone danced to the music of the Mellow Moods, who were unbeatable. The height of the evening came at coronation time. The Senior Atten- dants. Marlene Magno and Lavon Alley, led the court to the dance floor, followed by the queen, Nancy Walton. Here Kathy Severa crowned Nancy Queen of the 1968 Teenette Formal. At Nancy's right is Paul L. Rowland. Jr., crownbearer; and at her left is Denise Calabrese, flower girl. Nancy, escorted by Gary Gatto. begins her reign officially by lead- ing the court in a dance, after which everyone began dancing. Each year the Teenettes hold their formal in February and elect a queen and court, but everyone will agree that Fantasy in Frost was the best for- mal held yet. This year the Teen- ettes chose these girls for their court. Sopho- more Attendants are Mary Druschel and Roseann Piscuineri. The Junior Attendants are Debi Ayers and Marian Christy. The Senior Attendants are Lavon Alley and Mar- lene Magno. And of course, Queen Nancy Walton. On a cold, windy evening the Whites have a visitor who tells them a strange tale. Sergeant- Major Morris has a monkey's paw which he claims will grant three people each three wishes. But though the wishes were granted, those three people would have cause to wish they hadn’t been. Mr. White becomes the third owner of the paw at his own insistence and wishes for two thousand dollars. Morning brings Sampson, a ser- vant of the electric company, and the news that Herbert has been killed the night before by the machine which he operates. He presents the Whites with two thou- sand dollars as compensation. For a week the Whites are over- come with misery and bitterness. Their last hope of seeing their son alive again disappears as Mr. White makes his final two wishes. The strange tale of the monkey’s paw has proved true. The members of the cast and crew worked very hard to make The Monkey's Paw a suc- cess. Thanks to all of them. They are Seated: S. Borowski. D. Bowers. G. Gatto. J. Grim. Kneeling: K. Severa. This bus has a radio (i- • “Yay!M “stereo tapes with no tapes .. Aw! “and a bathroom; all for your personal conveni- ence. “Yay! “But only use it for emergencies' So the Continentals of T68 began their trip to Her- shey. Harrisburg, and Gettysburg. We left the High School at 2 a.m. on May 27, and returned 24 hours later in a wet, tired, and bedraggled condi- tion. “Chocolate-covered who?! ’ Hershey ... After six hours, the first stop was Hershey. $ £,rs that greeted us was the aroma of Chocolate, which could be smelled all over town. Everything in Hershey is brown and white, including the stores and houses! The lamp posts look like Hershey kisses, alter- nately wrapped and unwrapped. Of course the Hershey plant was the main attraction,’ and we toured it with interest. Other attrac- tions were the Milton Hershey High School for boys, and the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. Our only disappointment was a steady downpour which drenched us. but not our spirits. “What do you mean they don’t have bathrooms here?! Our objective in Har- risburg was the Cap- itol building. The building itself is huge, and quite or- nate. We had a group picture taken with Senator Osterling. who conducted us on a tour of the Capitol. We were able to see the Senate and House chambers, and we met Governor Shafer, who talked with us for a few minutes. A bit of panic developed as we walked from one long corridor to an- other, futilely search- ing for the buses! Harrisburg ... At Gettysburg, we visited the Gettysburg Na- tional Museum, where we saw the Electric Map Show of the Battle of Gettysburg. From there, we toured the battlefield by bus with a guide from the Museum. We finished up our stay in Gettysburg with a visit to the Wax Museum where we saw the Battle of Gettysburg portrayed by wax figures. Then began the six-hour journey home which ended at approximately 3 a.m. the next morning. We would like to thank all the chaperones, espe- cially Miss Rentz, who planned the trip and made it possible. Each in his own way Wish I had a watermelon . .“ and Gettysburg. 93 Smile. wf en you say that !!! Tension mounted in rooms A-25 and A-8 as the minutes slowly ticked away and Seniors dressed for the Occasion. All over the Senior High wing were heard cries of I'm sure I brought my collar!” and “Which side does the tassel go on?” From Miss Rentz: ”lf you haven’t got a white shirt and tie, I'll buy them for you!” and “Who is chewing gum?!” Then it was time to line up and pass a final inspection, including a “helmet check” by Mr. Roussos. Suddenly it was eight o’clock and the slow march into the auditiorium began. Finally the long-awaited moment had arrived. Commencement.. On June 4, 1968, one hundred forty-seven Se- niors marched into the auditorium of Union Area High School to the strains of Pomp and Circum- stance played by Marianne Baier, and emerged as young men and women eager for new horizons. On that night, one hundred and forty-seven Se- niors reached the ultimate goal of their high school careers and became Graduates - Seniors no longer. toward new horizons As Mr. Roussos called the gradu- ates. each marched to the stage to receive his diploma from Russel S. Bowers, President of the Board of Education. Then a smiling group of new Graduates watched as Joe Chiaro, President of the Class, pre- sented Miss Carrie Mae Rentz with a watch and roses. Smiling and crying, one hundred forty-seven Graduates marched from the audito- rium to recieve friends and family in the hall. In a happy confusion, the return of caps and gowns was ac- complished. and each graduate left a bit sadly with the words “come and see me again in his mind. This year thirteen strong Scots over- came their setbacks and fought nine battles that will always be remembered. These boys have come a long way since Junior High days, when they displayed their potential with a winning season. They moved up to the Junior Var- sity, dreaming of their final goal. The dream changed into a reality, and the thirteen Scots became full-fledged members of the Var- sity team. Co-captam Larry Dardynski. right guard. All County-1st team. Mike Annarella. tackle. They showed such great promise that the word “Scot- ties” was whispered through the training grounds of their oppo- nents in a tone of awe mingled with fear. The Scots soon found out what this fear meant, as they be- came crippled through the loss of three starting lettermen at the very beginning of the season. For a time their opponents took advan- tage of this, and the Scotties seemed to crumble a bit. But a Scot down is not a Scot beaten. They summoned forth all their re- serve. courage, and skill, and flashed back into the fray. Their crippling injuries served only as a spur to drive the Scots forward to victory once more. And the Scots became the proud owners of a fine record of six wins and only three losses. 99 9 9 • 9 • « 9 e fm A Members of the Varsity team are Row One: Joe Chiaro. John Grim. Dale Shannon. Did anyone ever doubt that the Scots of ’68 could ever be anything but Number One? Certainly not anyone who knew and worked with this stubborn group of boys. They fought for their honors on the floor, but they fought even harder in another way. The work that goes into the making of a fine team is immeasurable. Every boy on the squad, the coaches, and the guys behind the scene made the Section 20 Champs. The guys behind the scene -Managers Bill Ash and Bradley Jones; and the Statisticians Joe Conti. Gary Trimble, and Mike Padula-were as valuable as any players. The Scots had a cer- tain style that they developed through long hours of practice. Every game was action packed excitement, generated by the fast- breaks and the whip-sharp plays. A new addi- tion to the Scots bag of tricks was the sur- prising play they called Salt and Pepper. In more than one situation the Scotties com- pletely bewildered their opponents and gave their fans one more something to remember them by as a part of their new style. During each game, the Scots showed that they were scrappy, dependable, steeled professionals. And one more thing. They never gave up. Ninth Grade Team Kneeling: Ken Lucas. Bernie Rossman. We look around and ask -where did it go? We worked, we played — but for twelve years? Then we look the other way -into tomorrow. Suddenly we’re not so tall as we thought we were And not so smart. But we find that somehow We learned a decisive lesson at Union: something we wouldn’t have had without the Administration and Faculty, without friendship and understanding — a direction into that uncertain tomorrow. It can never be so dark again Though the world may change and the times may change and we change.
