Womer Paula Jean Zarella Worm m Paula 27 Salvacion A Abaygar A.F.S. student from the Philippines It has been a wonderful year, friends. I couldn't find enough words to say how grateful I am to all of you for making it so. I could never forget Union. There would always be thousands of things to remind me of it-the basket- ball games, the term papers, the fire drill in the midst of a test, those tempting after-dinner naps, my first snow fall, and most of all that ever-fateful cry of “Where’s your pass?” and the ever convincing reply of “Would you believe . . . ?” All these I am going to take back with me plus many other memories. I have seen America, felt the challenge of living in it, and have had a touch of its greatness In our own world in Union, the East has met the West, and I hope it would forever stay that way, for only then could we have one big solid world marked with under- standing and brotherhood. Some of us have gone to Union all our lives, some have come from other schools, and yet each of us has played an important part in making this history what it is. It all began in 1955. Do you remember the daily sixth grade rou- tine of marbles, jacks, and jump rope? Or how about the first time we changed classes? It doesn’t seem too important to us now but then it was something special. Maybe you’ve kept your autograph book or your ribbons. They hold many memories and bring to mind thoughts of running around the school yard in our sailor hats with our ribbons streaming behind us, handing our books to one another and trying to think up a new and clever way to sign each one. Our first year in Junior High School brought with it many exciting events. How can you ever forget the almost electric excitement that generated through the school when our Varsity basketball team won the Section. I’ll bet you had your first real case of puppy love or maybe you had your first crush on a teacher—or would you rather we didn’t mention that? Have you ever stopped and tried to remember all the notes you wrote, and how many times you passed them in class? Yes, it all seems like so long ago. One thing I’m sure you’ll remember is the day we proudly moved across the administrative wing and with heads held high and butter- flies in our stomachs took our places in the world of Senior High as Sophomores. We banded together and shook off the old idea of five separate homerooms, and elected the following class officers: presi- dent, Janet Malizia; vice president, Bill Hassig; secretary, Pete Quinn; treasurer, Darrell Rishel. How many boxes of Christmas candy did you sell that year? I’ll bet it was at least five, because then you were eligible to attend the Sophomore Class Party. Did you do the “monkey”, the “Sweet Pea and the “jerk”, or did you simply sit there and wait for them to serve all that delicious pizza? Also 10th grade found us joining every club we could get our hands on dues for. I'm sure the girls will not forget our Teenette initiation, and maybe some of the boys are still thinking about the requirements for the football initiation. The saying, “Time flies when you’re having a good time,” really holds true because before we knew it we were members of the Junior class. Again we held elections and the results were as follows: presi- dent. Darrell Rishel; vice president. Bill Hassig; treasurer, Pete Quinn; secretary, Elaine Krewjewski. They led us in supplementing our class treasury with our Easter Candy Sale. Being Juniors also brought with it the fulfillment of many tradi- tions. Among them of course, was the ordering of our 1967 class rings, which were delivered in time for Thanksgiving Day. Little did anyone realize but the class of ’67 was harboring many unknown thespians who proved to us and to the world that they could truly take an audi- ence by storm. Under the direction of Mrs. Bates we presented “The Boy Who Changed The World . Can anyone who attended the performance ever forget Dave’s petti-pants? Before we knew it, it was time to decorate the cathedral for our first Junior-Senior Prom. Do you remember how many hours we spent lower- HISTORY ing the ceiling alone? I guess we’ll always remember dancing to “Shan- grila”, and dreaming of the day when this would be the setting for our prom. Most of us realize that that day came all too soon, for before we knew it we were full fledged Seniors. For us, being seniors is a very important thing and it was just as important that we elected very special class officers for the occasion: president, Frank Sniezek; vice president, Dave Kunselman; treasurer, Elaine Krewjewski, and secre- tary, Melinda Roussos. One of the most exciting memories of our Senior year will always be our Football team. How can you ever forget the pep rally for the Laurel game, or that round of applause we gave to our coach, Mr. Roussos, and last but not least, that fabulous score of 31-0! It is only fitting that they went on to become co-tricounty champs. As always, football season brought with it our very own home- coming game, which was reigned over by our 1966 Homecoming Queen, Kathy McClenahan. The other senior candidates were Karyn Bidinotto and Kathy Panella. Some Enchanted Evening Jane Nelson was chosen queen of the 1967 Teenette Formal. Other senior attendants were Joanne French and our A.F.S. student Sally Abagayr. Once again the Senior class brought forth its talent and put Broad- way to shame with the production of “You the Jury” under the direc- tion of Mr. Barry Drandakysis. There were many other memorable events in our Senior year, like the ordering of our dinks of Navy Blue and White, being measured for our caps and gowns, selecting our class name —Classics of ’67 —and planning our Senior activity, a night on the Gateway Clipper. Soon it was April 29, and we entered the “Grecian Gardens” of our Junior-Senior Prom for one of the highlights of our graduation. As we danced to the music we thought with mixed emotions of the events that would soon follow, as we, the class of '67, prepared for our final acts as a class. And then all too soon the days came and went. First on June 4 we gathered for the Baccalaureate services. Next, it was June 7, Gradua- tion Day. Slowly our names were announced and we mounted the stage to receive our diplomas. This was the day that we had dreamed about for so long and planned for ever since we first entered Union. We stood in the halls receiving the congratulations of our friends and teachers with smiling faces and misty eyes. We gazed around at the building that had been our home for six years, trying to engrave on our minds each special memory that it held for us. And now that our saga has reached its climax, we would like to thank everyone who helped to make it possible, and especially our senior advisors Mr. Roussos, Miss Rentz, Mrs. Clymer, Mrs. Humphrey, and Mr. Zarlengo. As we leave these halls to become part of a great nation, we take with us many unforgettable moments and yet we leave behind a small part of ourselves —a part that can never truly be recovered. The Grecian touch was apparent in the statues, flow- ers, and pillars which surround- ed the dance floor. Even the crowns were fashioned in the style of An- cient Greece. Music for dancing- and for the crown- ing- ceremonies was provided by the “Skylarks”. Their music added a romantically g-ay background for the Prom. 73 COMMENCEMENT On June 7, 1967, 152 seniors marched down the aisles for the last time at Union High to receive their rewards from twelve years of hard work. The exercises were successful due to the help of Miss Rentz and Mr. Roussos, senior class advisors. JUNE 7,1967 Mr. Imre Kovacs, a renowned student of world affairs, ad- dressed our 152-member grad- uating class on June 7, 1967. The noted Hungarian, who has studied economic conditions in nine European countries, se- lected as his topic, “The Chal- lenge of Being an American.” He stressed to the class the importance of the plus factor in an American. Mr. Kovacs is the only foreign-born American to receive the National Best Teller Award. Paul L. Rowland, secondary princi- pal, presented the class and gave the welcome, Mr Rous- sos, senior class ad- visor called the graduates while Russell S. Bower, president of the School Board, pre- sented the diplo- mas. As the seniors marched out they were filled with mixed emotions. There were tears or a smile on each senior's face as they realized this was finally the end. 75 GATEWAY At four-thirty on June 2, the Senior Class assembled at the high school to board the motor coaches for the drive to Pitts- burgh. Soon the Gateway Clipper was in view and one by one we filed on board and our night time cruise began. 76 CLIPPER Some danced all night to the strains of the “Embers”, while others chose to view the Pitts- burgh skyline from the top deck. A smorgasbord was served on board and we ate our dinner as the huge paddle-wheel power- ed us down the river. 77 s Latin Awar Activities (boys) .
