June, 1966 Dear Friends, The end of my stay in the U S. is coming closer and there is one question which arises more and more often: Are you glad to go back to Norway or do you rather want to stay in this country? It is a difficult question. I love my native country and my Norwegian family, and of course I’m anxious to see them again On the other hand I can hardly see how it is possible to cut off the ties which bind me to my American family and all the friends I’ve got here So it is certainly with mixed emotions I shall leave your country. Now I can look back upon a year as a student at Union High School I want you all to know and to feel how grateful I am for the way you received me and treated me. You certainly have given me an unforgettable experience this year and I will miss you all. One summer I hope to be back to visit you, so let me not close with good-bye, but rather see you again Eldri ELDRI ESPEDAL, our AFS'er from Norway This cowgirl decided she liked Viking ships better Looks like an international ball but not really Eldri’s date for the Prom was Art. an AFS'er from Thailand. Eldri can run pretty fast, but she was still worried about that bull. At home Eldri wears her costume on national holi- days and celebrations, not very often because it's terrible hot . Eldri’s struggles with home- work during the first few weeks were made more bear- able by the typically un- Norwegian weather. Dancing a folk-dance is much easier when there's a good-looking guy there instead of your Ameri- can sister. Eldri couldn’t find any moun- tains to climb so she started climbing trees 29
