It is a difficult question. I love my native country and my Norwegian family, and of course I’m anxious to see them again On the other hand I can hardly see how it is possible to cut off the ties which bind me to my American family and all the friends I’ve got here So it is certainly with mixed emotions I shall leave your country. Now I can look back upon a year as a student at Union High School I want you all to know and to feel how grateful I am for the way you received me and treated me. You certainly have given me an unforgettable experience this year and I will miss you all. One summer I hope to be back to visit you, so let me not close with good-bye, but rather see you again Eldri ELDRI ESPEDAL, our AFS'er from Norway This cowgirl decided she liked Viking ships better Looks like an international ball but not really Eldri’s date for the Prom was Art. an AFS'er from Thailand. Eldri can run pretty fast, but she was still worried about that bull. At home Eldri wears her costume on national holi- days and celebrations, not very often because it's terrible hot . Eldri’s struggles with home- work during the first few weeks were made more bear- able by the typically un- Norwegian weather. Dancing a folk-dance is much easier when there's a good-looking guy there instead of your Ameri- can sister. Eldri couldn’t find any moun- tains to climb so she started climbing trees 29 ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS Award Winner Agriculture..............................................Mike Hink Art............................................Frances Chiaro Band.........................................Gary McClenahan Chorus...................................................Joan Bender Commercial...................................Karen Woodring English.........................................Kathy Jenkins Mathematics.....................................Joan Bender Science.........................................Joan Bender Activities Girl.................................................Marcia Navarra Boy....................................................Mike Hink American Agriculturalist Award..................Ron Tarnaski American Cyanamid First.........................................Joan Bender Second........................................James Smith Bausch and Lomb.................................James Smith Cheerleading Awards.............................Betty Goodge Barbara Grim Jo Ellen Robb Crisco Award..........................................Beverly Smock D. A 10 11 12 CLASS HISTORY The saga of the Class of '66 began in 1954. As first gra- ders, we were found not only in the Union elementary build- ing; but also in little red schoolhouses scattered from the Harbor to Sunny Avenue to Edinburg. Our first six years seem almost like a dream to us now. The everyday routine of marbles, jacks, and jump rope was frequently sprinkled with big events” like arranging the showcases, preparing for the annual Safety Poster contest, changing classes for the first time, and making butter in science class. Then suddenly sixth grade came speedingly toward its end. As tradition demanded, we each brought our autograph books and ribbons. (These once all-important ribbons are now dust ridden and forgotten, if they were kept at all.) When we entered seventh grade as big kids”, we thought we had really made it. Little did we know what lay ahead of us. Our dream of finally entering the high school was punctured, when we were taken to the firehall; but the ad- ventures we ‘suffered’ there will never be forgotten -Who could ever forget “Old Faithful” exploding at regular in- tervals; paper airplanes, chalk, and other bits of debris min- gled with voices from three other classes sailing over the partitions; and Mr. Calabrese’s pizza party? On March 3 our cherished dreams of being in the old high school were abandoned forever when the trucks came to make the final move to the new high school As seventh graders many of the boys began their long careers in various sports Our seventh, eighth, and ninth grade years passed quickly amid a whirlwind of typical junior high note-writ- ing, homeroom parties, and many ‘serious’ cases of puppy love. But at last came our victory as we moved across the administrative wing and took up residence in the senior high as shaky sophomores After nine years of being five separate homerooms we elected officers and united as sophomores against the world. It was, to us, like beginning of a new era. Perhaps tenth grade should be called the joining year. As we hungrily eyed the long list of available activities, many of us bit off more than we had time to chew Along with our activities, we inherited the sophomore Christmas candy sale, more dif- ficult courses, a recognition of the increasing need to burn the 'midnight oil’. But these things only served to hasten the year along and seemingly in a matter of days we came back to Union as strutting juniors. (cont. on page 36) 34 TEACHERS IN ACTION The lining is of the finest satin and is “It could pose problems—consequently .” accented by...” “Marilyn.. Bridget.. Gina .Zsa Zsa. “Well, when I was a coach... Dickie Dobbler” 35 (Class History continued from page 34) As experienced juniors we again plunged into the await- ing year We sped through out last Christmas as underclass- men, the ordering and receiving of our class rings, and the arrival of our junior candy sale. Then came our much anticipated junior play. Not only was The Mouse That Roared considered a success, but the many practices also were scored as smashing hits. From the rooftop to the parking lot we shook the school “The Arabian Nights” was the theme of our Jr.Sr. Prom, which was our main project. Then came final tests and the year was almost over. The sadness of watching the gradu- ation of many of our friends was brightened considerably as we at last received the school key. With the autumn leaves of '65. we came back to Union for the last time, full of eagerness and perhaps a trace of fear; but definitely full of anticipation and hope In all kinds of weather we watched with pride as our boys battled their way to victory on the gridiron. During the winter, expressions like Tuff as nails’, ‘Well, would you believe...? and ‘Eh. sorry about that chief be- came part of the English language. As the year ran its course. many seniors began to replace the ‘midnight oil’ with ‘mid- night gasoline' and the 5th six weeks report cards showed ample evidence. We were so busy ordering dinks, being measured for caps and gowns, and preparing for the senior trip, that we hardly noticed the weeks creeping by. Suddenly the Prom. Shangri- la, approached and then passed. Before we realized it, final tests were over; Baccalaureate and the Senior Assembly had come and gone; and it was graduation night. It is difficult to explain how we felt that night. Naturally we were ecstatic that the event which we had anticipated for twelve years was a reality, but the realization that we would seldom see many of the friends that we had made through the years brought a twinge of sadness We are leaving Union to live among the adults of the world We leave Union to go to the colleges, to the factories, to the offices, and to the drawing boards of a great nation. We will have to learn to accept the never ending duties that face all citizens of a free society. And we must learn that “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” The saga of the Class of ‘66 didn't end on June 9, but is still continuing toward vast new horizons. by Margaret Eppinger Stronger than dirt. “My Mother is stronger than your 36 Mother” SMILE! SENIOR HIGH BAND o oo This school year, as in the past, the marching band participated at half-time in presenting fine shows on the field. The band, under the leadership of Terral L. Stoffer, also demonstrated their fine ability by marching in several parades. In January the second annual Music Festival was held. Everyone enjoyed the finale, “America, the Beautiful,” which was done by chorus and junior-senior concert band. In April the band cut a record of both classical and popular songs. The seniors of the band will always remember the trip to the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D C., in April, 1964. This year the band held a picnic at Millcreek Park, Ohio. The 1965-66 band officers were Gary McClenahan, president; Bill Bevan, vice president; Jean Dover, secre- tary; and, Frank Conti, treasurer.
