Utopian (1961) Union Area High School 7 New Castle, Pennsylvania We, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and sixty-one, wish to dedicate our yearbook to Miss Elma Robinson, whose work as both teacher and librarian has been an inspiration to us all through high school. Thank you. Miss Robinson. ADMINISTRATION Mr. Mason J. Bodkin. Supervising Principal Mr. Harold Johnson, High School Principal In future years, your annual will prove to be a great source of personal satisfaction and a treasure to enjoy. Remember, times change and so will your old friends. Many of your classmates you have seen for the last time at Commencement. You will now swing out into the tide of the world’s humanity. I trust the most important thing you have learned in school is how to get along with others. If you have, your success is assured. Best wishes for a successful life. Mason J. Bodkin This yearbook is probably the best reminder that you will have of your life in school. We hope that all of you will have many pleasant memories to take with you. You are about to face a very challenging and highly competitive world. It has been our main interest to try to give all of you a strong foundation for the life that is ahead of you. We need good people for all kinds of jobs, even those that do not require a college education. Whatever life’s work that you select, develope a good reputation and do the best that you possibly can. Make sure that you go through life with a clear conscience. 2 Harold Johnson SCHOOL BOARD — Seated: Mr. Michael Annarella. Mr. Hill. President; Mr. Philip Clark. Mr. Bodkin. SENIOR OFFICERS Under the leadership of our officers and ad- visors, we spent a most active senior year. Our main financial project for the year was a maga- zine campaign that tested the initiative and selling ability of all. (? I Kathy Smith carried off top honors and Miss Rentz received the “great prize,” as usual. After the great migration to new quarters our annual play was presented and we sponsored the first dance of the season. Our officers had a major part in the organi- zation of an all night party, graduation exercises, a memorable dinner dance, and many behind the scenes activities that left the rest of us free to enjoy them. We offer them a long overdue “Thanks” for a wonderful year of service! 41 ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS Award IF inner Activities (boy) .. To follow the sweat shirt campaign of last year, they began the new' year with stationery, stationery, and more stationery! Then came the Union Scotties pep buttons! Loyalty abounded in great form; the treasurer’s purse began to jingle. They sponsored the traditional Harvest Moon Ball, contributed greatly to our sport teams, and gave one of the finest proms within memory. 45 SOPHOMORES Row One: H. Magusiak. S. Kennedy was elected President. Russia and the United States finally put men into space. The Pirates won the pennant and World Championship. Union area witnessed our mass exodus from the old school into the new. Remember when? Union High athletes filled the school’s new trophy cases. 96 Union High had winning trams in all (our sport . Our football team won the section title with an undefeated slate but was denied a chance to repeat as W.P.I.A.L. champs. Basketball standings showed Union second (again), hut our boys handed L. Butler his most humiliating defeat, 74 • 46. Union area was recognized for its good sportsmanship. The Twist” and “Pony Time excited teen- agers all over the country — remember? KEN HUR and EXODUS were the best mo- tion pictures of the year. The “Jackie Kennedy Look” excited the whole country. There was talk about “recession” and “de- pression”, and magazines were hard to sell — but: The senior trip, the Junior-Senior Prom, the all-night party’ were all great successes. A sad fared Carl jozefczyk handed the school key to Virginia Valle, the new leader — lots of luck.
