Joe said it would - but, the dreary sky and snow flurries posed as no threat to the excitement of the annual Burgettstown homecoming. There was more than enough warmth generated from the enthusiasm of Devil fans and alumni when the parade, enti- tled United We Stand, had begun at noon, from hom tooters to kooky clowns, box squawkers to clip, clop steeds, and the twirls, swirls, and pom pom girls, this gala event was off to a grand start. Majestic floats splashed gay color as they moved down Main Street, boasting to all that high school club members work hard to express their Burgettstown pride. The Spanish Club s We Are The World took first place at the judging. Student Council 's Leadership Through Action placed third, and the Trench Club's La Tour Eiffel was judged as Honorable Men- tion. The second place title was held by the Senior float, Together We Go, in- spired by their special guests, the kin- dergarten classes of the Burgettstown School District honoring their procla- mation. Class of 2000. The Student Council recognized an important role in our school system as their honored guests, the Burgettstown Bus Drivers, who merrily strolled in antique autos. Also parading in classy cars were the 1987 Homecoming Court: Marci Grif- fith. Erica Brown, Wendy Petka, Shelley Shimon, Monica Paris, and Marci Wojtowicz. Before fans briskly carried themselves to Hill Memorial Stadium, the BHS Band closed our parade in jazzy song filling the souls with Burgett- stown Spirit. Prior to the game, where our Devils embarrassed McGuffey with a 14-6 defeat, the Class of 2000 re- leased blue and white balloons to com- memorate the Seniors last student homecoming and this class's first. Lat- er, at half-time, the queen, Monica Par- is, was crowned, mobbed by her fellow cheerleaders. For the BHS students and alumni, a dance in the school cafe- teria was held from 9-11:00 p.m. with guest band. State of Mind. We con- gratulate the Student Council for a wonderful job! 51 • Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87’ Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 Homecoming 87 • Homecoming 87 52 Seniors 54 Treas. The breaks con- sisted of Mrs. Grabski's giving back gifts, which resembled the one's many seniors had given her throughout the year,- the senior chorus mem- bers singing a song of farewell, the verses of the song written by Jodi Charlier, dealt with things which happened during the year; and then, the Who's Who awards were given out and Mrs. Cline received her gift from us—the Class of 1988. When things got rough and kind of tough We pulled together and stayed until the end. The friend we've made throughout the years Share our hopes and wildest dreams. But now we must go our separate ways Tor forever and an eternity seems. At least we ll have our memories Of high school days that have gone by— When life was carefree and simple. And there was nothing we didn't try! -Jodi Charlier Future Vocations 98 Business Is Our Business Standing pretty for a photo prior to the Westing- house trip: B. Bashioum, D. Perkins, L. Lounder, L. Ward The 1987-88 yearbook staff worked diligently in sales this year sponsoring the Sadie Hawkins' Dance, pro- moting book sales themselves, conducting Jr. high book fairs, and atttaining ads. With much help from our all-knowing editorial staff and the sacrificing of after school hours, vacation time, and studyhalls from many of our members, we made it! Pictured here are photos from yearly work, meetings with our helpful rep., Jim Jackson, and of the Book Fair. From last minute recruiting of Brian and his camera to finding Josh at his art stand drilling away at his cre- ative abilities for our division pages with Chris, from sending Tami on wild goose chases to hunt down members to trying to inspire both Michelle and Jodi poetically, from Tara, Lori, and Deana s calculating dollars to watching Wendy go at ads, from the typing fools of Brenda, Susan, MaryAnn, Michalene, Felicia, and Tricia to after school giggles with Phil, Jan. Sher- ry and Kristin, and, of course from Mrs. Price's orders and pleas to those of Mrs. Marler, (WHEW) we proudly present your memories! Editorial staff: W Petka. M. Griffith. T. Reed, D. McCuen. P. Massengill J Anthony. P. Riggle. B. Davis. T. Mirich Thank Jodi 6c Co. for a mural to remember! The Yearbook Staff would like to take this opportunity to thank those freshmen, sophomores. Juniors, and seniors who attended the Sadie Mawkins Dance April 16, 1988. Though we had a very small crowd attend, we tried very hard to make the evening an enjoyable and exciting one. When we put our heads together, we were certain the dance would be a hit. A few of the seniors on the staff suggested that the theme be changed from a spring couples dance to that of a beach party ... wearing summer apparrel . . . deco- rating with palm trees, surf- style color, and sun rays ... dancing to crab party tunes. .. The Limbo!... chug-a-lug contest . . . and freebie snacks and drinksl But, due to many a circumstance (l.e., the weather, the Trench Club tour, and mere- ly a change). our profits were as minimal as the en- thusiasm generated. There are some who always make their fun instead of waiting for it to be handed to them, and for these persons, we are grateful ... as well as considering their class lucky to have theml The Sadie Hawkins Dance may return to the senior high students one day, but that will proba- bly be the day that those staff members who have worked so hard preparing have forgotten the dissap- pointment their classmates had brought to theml Everyone has their own Limbo Style! Our major accomplishment of 1987 was the reinstatement of the Snowball winter semi-for- mal. The dance, December 19, was quite successful and we hope to return it to annual status. M.H.S. sponsors and conducts the tutoring pro- gram at Burgettstown which has proved most beneficial for many of our students. Our So- ciety has recently introduced a formal induction ceremony which is held annually in the spring. We also hope to fund an annual Honor Society Merit Scholarship to be presented at the Sr. Awards. A special thanks to Mr. Walker, our sponsor! -Joshua Anthony. 104 The Snow Ball Mind if I cut in. Student Councils: The Burgettstown Student Council is a unique experi- ence. Members often begin their year with only a vague idea of what will be expected of them. They soon leam that: Their term of office is one of the toughest times of their lives... They are expected to be a good winner (much hard- er than losing well!) . . . They are expected to be everyone’s servant, but master of them- selves in achieving ultimate standards in every field . . . They are expected to know ev- erything about a subject . . . but to spend all of their time planning, organizing, doing - - - without any investment in study or time for themselves. Student Council members of- ten find themselves revered, admired, maligned, mim- icked, ridiculed, and snidely talked about. They are often lonely, disgraced, cheered, and hated. But they are ex- pected to lead. Sr. High Student Council: Row 1: M. Held, A. Cipranic, M. Griffith (Treas.). A. Valenti (Pres.), E. Mioduski (Vice-Pres.). C. McQraw, M. Lounder Row 2: D. Banish. D. This included a thrill- ing homecoming victory against the con- ference leader. McGuffey. Riding on lau- rels of this impressive victory, the Devils may have become overconfident. The squad suffered some difficult losses, but they closed the season with an impres- sive victory over arch-rival Beth-center, finishing at a respectable 5-5 mark. The season was good con- sidering volleyball hasn't been a part of our sport s schedule for a few years. The girls who were Involved worked hard practicing for games and. all around, did their best. Mrs. Takah also did a good job coaching, trying to break many of her players' habits, and keeping her cool while they made mistakes (which Is under- standable considering all of the new rules which needed a little getting used to. ) The season was hard to let go lor all of the seniors but we wish next year's team the beat of luck and we're behind them all the way. -Marci Griffith School 9.5. Cooper, Mr. Matalik Girl's Basketball at Burgettstown has come a long way in the past several seasons. This season the Lady Devils posted a 6 and 8 season, loosing some close heartbreak- ers and finishing fourth in a tough WPIAL section 15. Coach Jim Matalik felt the injury to a starter as well as the general lack of height, averaging only 5 feet 4 inches, hurt this year's team. Michelle Lander, Lauri Shipman, and Margie Wright will be leaving but their collective contributions to the 1988 season as well as their interest and enthusiasm for the game will be greatly missed. The Lady Devils received a good bit of media attention due to the outstanding season play of junior Jamie O'Donnell who held the lead in all of Washington County and the WPIAL for scoring during much of the season. KDKA-TV received a letter from staff member and former coach Amy Proats which resulted in Bob Pompiani coming to BHS to present Jamie with the “Extra Effort Award. An all school program was held with the Jazz Band and Mr. Conley on saxophone making their assembly debut and the cheerleaders sporting special Jamie Day tee shirts. Blue Devil Matmen The Blue Devil Matmen had a very interesting season in '87-88. These wrestlers were truly dedicated to their sport. The long endless practice sessions payed off for several of the wrestlers during the various area tournaments. In the brutal competition of the W.P.I.A.L. State Tournaments at Hershey, Pa., Brad Abbott took an exhilarating fourth place. This year, four awards went to the wrestlers who were most deserving. With eleven pins. Brad Abbott redeved the Most Valuable Wrestler award. Bob Tharp was instrumen- tal with the hip pocket cradle to win himself the Fastest Pin of 23 seconds. The Hustle Award went to Todd Froats. Todd had the eye of the tiger and was always ready for the win. The Most Improved Wrestler Award was based on a 3 year career. Roy Kotouch recieved the Most Improved Wrestler award. This season Roy used the jap-wizard to win himself several victories. Dedication felt not only towards the coach, but also toward fellow teammates. Because of this, this year has been a successful one. For the first time in seven years, the varsity Blue Devils earned a spot in the WPIAL Dlavoffs and advanced into the second round action until defeated by Charleroi. Also, this year J-V and Varsity took a trip to Charleston, South Carolina to visit the Baptist College. There they played several exhibition games with various teams from the area. Coaches Mr. Matalik, Mr. Sawhill, and Mr. Colpo have been great motivators which lead the Devils to a fantastic finish. __ Lady Devils' Softball '88 Peters Twp. 3-15 Carlynton Rain Canon-Mac 8-4 West Allegheny 11-6 S.S. With four players coming back (Jamie O'Donnell, Chrissy Bell, Michelle Lander, and Lori Orenchuk) and with a new coaching staff (Kathie Ankley and Mr. Danna) the team has had a successful season. Miss Ankley feels that this year's team has done so well because it worked together not only with co- operation but also with skill. Jamie O'Donnell's skill paid off this year. Jamie was the highest scor- er with 444. Miss Ankley also hopes that next year's team will do as well because of nine start- ers, seven are returning.
