Though it wasn't really a great sea- son, the team did have some vic- tories. Mot only did they win 7 regu- lar section matches, they also took fourth place in the Section 13 team tournament held at Double Dam Qolf Club. In this tournament, Bur- gettstown's number one golfer, Da- vid Allison, was the medalist with a I guess. I 'm just the Country Club type of guy.—David Allison 771 Dave also won at Lone Pine Country Club at the Section 13 indi- vidual qualifiers, he then advanced to the Area Tournament held at Me- macolin CC. Unfortunately, Dave missed advancing to the next level of play by a mere two strokes! But congratulations to Dave on an ex- cellent season! Back to team action, the Burgett- stown golfers took 5th place in the Century Conference tournament held at Chippewa QC. Mice going guys! Oops, almost forgot—the team wasn't all guys this year! fresh- man Dana Yanni had an impressive season, too. At the girl's WP1AL tour- nament held at Butler's QC, she fin- ished 4th, which qualified her for state action. So on to State College, PA for the PIAA tournaments at Elk's CC. Here she finished 24th out of 44 golfers, which is terrific, especially for a freshman! Congratulations and good luck to Dana, and also to Coa- ch Vallina, without whom none of this would be possible! Although the 87-88 golf team will be without number one man Dave Alli- son, younger brother (and number two man) Rob Allison will be back to carry the team. Good luck for a suc- cessful season! With seven returning starters, three of which were named Century Three All- Conference and two that were All- Conference honorable mention, an experienced Blue Devil s squad met the '86 season with great expecta- tions. Sure enough, the Air Express' delivered, taking off to an 8-0 start. In week nine the game of the centu- ry'' was played against Beth-Center to determine the conference champion- ship. nothing was settled as the game ended in an anticlimatic 7-7 tie. After a disappointing loss to McQuffey on Se- nior Might the following week, hopes remained high as the Blue Devils had already clinched a playoff berth post- ing a fine record of 8-1-1 during the regular season. Due to key injuries and a stubborn South Allegheny team, our Devils were defeated in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs, but the Air Express had earned a distinc- tion shared by only seven other class AA teams. It is difficult to realize the determina- tion and countless hours of work that result in a successful season, but through it all the Air Express contin- ued to soar' and never let down. '86 Season, This year's Blue Devil football banquet, held on December 2,1986, proved to be a very special one. The guest speak- er for the evening was the legendary Franco Marris, who is the third leading rusher in NFL history and an honored member of the Football Hall of Fame. The guests of honor were the Blue Devil football team, their coaches, the Varsi- ty Cheerleaders, and the Blue Devil Marching Band mem- bers. The banquet was held at the Barto VFW Home in Slovan. Dinner was served, and the evening proved to be an enjoyable one for all in attendance. Row 1: B. Abbott; V. Eannace; J. Gabrielli; M. Guerst; M. Bongiomi; R. Lombardi Row 2: M. LaRocka. R. The 1987 Varsity Blue Devils pulled off a spectacular season, one they could definitely look back on with pride. They entered the section playoffs with a dazzling 15-4 standing, and for the first time since 1972, clinched the section title with an 80-68 defeat over Fort Cherry. But the Blue Devils did not stop there. They continued to exhibit cooperation and teamwork. The schools spirit rose to unbelievable heights. For the first time in Burgettstown's history, the Blue Devils entered the State playoffs. Although they were defeated by Ligonier Valley in the first round game of the playoffs, the Blue Devil's outstanding performance definitely created an unforgettable season. Their two biggest wins were at Immaculate Conception (45-17) and home against Carmichaels (36-24). Unfortunately, the Blue Devil wrestlers did not quali- fy for the WPIAL team tournament. In the individual section tournaments, held at Trinity High School, Burgett- stown claimed one champ and two runners-up. Brad Abbott pinned Washington's Dave D'Alessandro in 2:26 to capture the 126 lb. title. Mick- ey LaRocka and Mike Griffith, 138 and heavyweight respectively, each took second. These three moved on to re- gional action, held at W fir J's Henry Memorial Gymnasium. This year, the region was extended to include Dis- trict 5, a very tough district from cen- tral south Pennsylvania. These wres- tlers dominated the tournament and helped to prevent any Burgettstown wrestler from qualifying for the state tournament. On February 6 and 7, the 7th Annual Burgettstown Invitational was held. As a team, the Blue Devils placed third (102% pts.) behind only Jefferson Morgan (115 pts.) and Avella (113 pts.) At 105. Kevin Karas, the ’86 98-lb champ, was runner up. as was Bob Tharp at 112. Placing third for Burgettstown were Brad Abbott (126). Mickey LaRocka (138). and Mickey Marshall (145). Next year the wrestlers will be with out Jeff Boustead. Chuckie Abbott, and Mike Griffith. President, Robbie Bittner, Vice-Presi- dent, Lori Mader, Secretary, and Melissa Hicks, Treasurer. Melissa, with the help of Mr. Walker, the Honor Society Adviser, coor- dinated a student tutoring program. Honor Society members helped students from all grade levels in troublesome subjects, dur- ing their study halls. The Honor Society, also, undertook fundraisers of selling Christ- mas candles and Coupon books. During April, sophomores and Juniors peti- tioned for membership into the Honor Soci- ety. To be eligible for membership consider- ation, students must have a CPA of 3.0. In addition, potential members must meet high standards of leadership, service, and character. The student's applications were reviewed by the faculty council consisting of Mr. Carson, Dr. Gottardi, Miss Lozosky, Mrs. Price, and Mr. Vallina. On Thursday, May 7th, 1987, 48 new mem- bers were inducted into the Honor Society at a traditional candlelight ceremony. Below: Row 1: L. Serish, M. Cumpston. J. Amos. R. Bittner, L. Mader, M. Hicks. This year something new, a Film Festival came to Burgettstown as a break following exams. This year has proven to be a great success for the Student Council. Jr. High Student Council 77 Child Development — Nursery School The 1987 Nursery School was an experience for everyone who participated. Every year, children around the ages of 3 and 4 are accepted to partake in the activities held for them in MM-4. This year's Nursery school began Jan. 22 and ended March 17. Every Tuesday and Thursday for 2 periods the Nursery school classes were in session. Puppet shows, art projects, story time, playtime, and snacktime were scheduled for when they came to class. The children as well as the juniors involved felt as though their time and hard work preparing was worthwhile. The students involved in this year's Nursery school are: Marci Griffith, Tina Markish, Linda Soukup. Michelle Tharp, Michelle Lander, Terri Weidert, and Bev Yonley. Ride Those Donkeys Thursday. November 20th. Donkey Bosketball re- turned to the Burgettstown High School Gymnasium. This annual event was sponsored by the Student Council. The night s events included the match-up between the Senior and Junior boys and then, the Senior and Junior girls. The first game was won by the Senior boys • what an impressive feat!!! Unfortunately though the Senior girls could not get their act togeth- er to beat the Junior girls for a class sweep. During the playoff game, the Junior girls tried desperately to gain a victory over the Senior boys. Even Marci Griffith showed her want for a win when she pushed Tom Krynak to the floor while attempting to steal the ball. All in all. the night's experience proved to be enjoy- able for the participants and the audience, the don- keys could not be reached for comment. The following students rode in this year's game: Tom Krynak, Alvin Stem, Arthur Abbott. Carl Manni. Verne Doumont, Jeff Jones, Tom Markish, John Roman, Bry- an Maltony, Shelly Conley, Lisa Serish. The American Dream On September 20, 1986, the people of Burgettstown truly experienced the American Dream. The festivities began at noon with the annual Homecoming parade. The parade included three floats constructed by the French Club, the Senior Class, and the Student Council. Other organizations, such as the Drama Club, the Health Careers Club, and the Spanish Club also participated. This year's parade was one of the largest and most exciting parades ever to march the streets of Burgettstown. The crowd's enthusiasm continued to grow as the game began. During the halftime ceremonies, Pam Pendeville was crowned Homecoming Queen. The members of the court included Lori Lane, Shelly Pompe, Melissa Quader, Melissa Hicks, and Tricia Danek. The afternoon was climaxed with an outrageous comeback by the Blue Devils and a triumphant victory over the Bentworth Bearcats. Later, the celebration concluded with the annual alumni dance held at the High School. The music was provided by the band, State of Mind. The evening of dancing made this special occasion complete. Certainly, the Homecominq of 1986 was one never to be forgotten. We Don't Have Tomorrow . . . But We Have Yesterday.
