Yadrick Since 1984 the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School has had a system of Associate Principals, each principal being responsible for three grade levels, coordinating the activities as the classes progressed through the school. Mr. Price and Mr. Hisiro also worked closely with the teachers directly involved with those grade levels. All special programs, services, student testing and guidance have been directed by Mr. Yanni, Director of Pupil Services. These individuals along with the Superintendent and School Board have been an important part of the educational process. 8 Carrying on the everyday activities are the teachers who give life and knowledge to that process. September 28, 1985, the Student Council sponsored the twenty-second annual Homecoming. The theme for this year's cele- bration was “Through the Years. Beginning the day's activities was the largest Homecom- ing parade ever to occur in Burgettstown. A variety of high school bands, clubs, Shriner units, and fire departments from Southwestern Pennsylvania participated in the parade. Our Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season against Beth Center. During the halftime cere- monies, Julie Stumpff was crowned the 1985 Homecoming Queen. Members of the court in- cluded: Rachelle Froats, Lani Hemphill, Marcy Resnik, Kristi Testa, and Tracy Vincenti. The winners of the float contest were: 1st place- Student Council, 2nd. place-Senior class, 3rd place-Spanish Club, and 4th place French Club. Ending the day's activities was the Alum- ni Dance which was held in the school cafeteria with State of Mind providing the music. The first annual Health Fair was held and was made available to all students. Due to the interest of the Health Careers Club a S.A.D.D. The students are select- ed on the basis of service and citizen- ship. Students are then honored at the monthly Lions Club Dinner Meeting. The students selected from the Class of 1986 were: Donna Shiel, David Danek, Toni Scruppi. Rod Williamson, and Mary Jo Anderson. On May 22, 1986 the National Honor Society induction cere- mony was held. At that time fifty-five juniors and seniors representing the top fifteen percent of their classes were installed by the officers of the Ft. Cherry High School Honor Society. During the candlelight ceremony Representative Vic Lescovitz spoke to the induct- ees. Officers, Rick Matalik, David Danek, and Rod Wil- liamson welcomed everyone on behalf of the members. The day began on a cold, dreary note, but the atmosphere soon changed with the first competition. Ron Locy ex- celled at the long jump by breaking the school record. Brian LaRue could not be caught as he circled the field. Runs, dashes, relays, hurdles, and obstacles added excitement as the seniors ulti- mately ruled supreme. Few juniors made the record books, but the junior boys ended the day's activities with a glorious win in the tug-of-war. Considering the Blue Devils only returned two starters on offense and three of the starting offensive linemen weighed under 160 pounds, the team had an outstanding season averaging over 21 points a game. The pre-season prognosis was 5-5 but through the dedicated efforts of our young men, the season record was 7-3 .. . missing a chance to participate in the WPIAL playoffs by losing a very hard fought contest against McGuffy; the last game of the season. Truly a highlight of the 1985 season was the overwhelming upset of the highly ranked Wash High Prex- ies. Our hats are off to those gallant student-athletes for representing our school with dignity and class. The one home loss was close, after tying 2 Vi to 2Vi. we lost in sudden death. One of the main reasons for our success at home is the toughness of our course (Ponderosa) We lost this year’s number one man, Tony Scruppi, along with anchors Damon Enos, and Ed Latkovic. He was definitely one of the main reasons for the success of this year’s team. We have Dave and Rob Allison returning and both have the potential to be among the best golfers in our section. Coming into the season we were hoping to win three or four matches. We ended with nine wins and surprised a lot of people.
