Turn the Page Burgettstown High School 1984 Annual Volume Forty-Four Dedication Faculty 4 Underclassmen Seniors Sports ....JMto...tffr. Clubs ... Activities Advertisements Every year, every month, every week, everyday is a memory, another page in the Book of Life. When each day is complete, the page is turned to begin anew. These are our memories and this is our book. In this yearbook, we’ve attempted to take a few pages from each year and share some of our lives. Turn the page. Dedication Mrs. Denise Cline This yearbook is intended to honor a very special friend. We dedicate this book as a token of our appreciation in return for all the help we received in times of need. Each member of the Senior Class has come in contact with her at one time or another. Daring to tread in problems when others had turned their backs, she became a reliable confidante. Her activities didn't stop in school; she sponsored dances, class picnics, proms, our senior class float, and the Senior Class since 9th grade. In between all these activities, her energy was devoted to drilling” us in between '‘breaks.” To quote her, Everyone has a purpose to be on this earth.” Without her advice and attention, our somewhat small world would have been a lot smaller. She gave us faith to believe in ourselves and we did believe! Thank you, Mrs. Cline, WE LOVE YOU. 4 q)0 Downtown Office Mrs. Jean Pasquale Secretary to Superintendent Mr. Eugene Sangiuliano Superintendent Mrs Donna Petka Bookkeeper. Where you look back to see how far you’ve come, and you know the best has just begun. This is the place. This is the Beginning of your life. In Memory of Richard Blake March 21, 1965 - March 10, 1980 Mother: Eleanor Richards Father: Charles Blake Death is but a pause, A comma along life's busy way; A time between the earthly life, And eternity's brighter day. He walked along this busy path And gave his love to all, But then he paused to answer God's soft and tender call. 46 In Memory of John Diamond John Paul Diamond Son of Jack and Mary Diamond May 25, 1966 - September 27, 1983 A friend was here, but now he is gone. When you think of a friend, You think of him as someone special ... Someone always there for you through good and bad. Someone who always had the right word or two to cheer you up. When you were down. When you fought with him, You felt so all alone. A friend was here, but now he is gone. When you lose a friend, It's always hard to forget him and to replace him. Though his time on earth is done, he will always be a friend. A friend------will always be a friend ------ No matter where he has gone. 47 Rich Soplinski Senior Class In 1978, the class of 84 entered the high school as frightened 7th graders. We elected Dave Antonetti as President, Steve Arnold as Vice-President, and Lesli Elich as Secretary-Treasurer. As we moved up into the 8th grade we gained confidence lacking the prior year. Our class officers were Alicia Tasz as President, Dave Antonetti as Vice-President, and Rich Rhinehart as Secretary-Treasurer. In the Fall of '80 we came back as the Kings of the Jr. High! This year, the Freshmen spread their wings at The Riot. We learned a great deal of maturity and responsibility. The class officers elected this year carried up until the 12th grade. President, Jim Reedy; Vice-President, Maureen Batnich; and Secretary-Treasurer, Jeff McGraw. Celebrating a great year we had a class party at the Burgettstown Park. Starting over again at the bottom of the Sr. High as Sophomores; we began participating in many activities and received our class rings to officiate our Sophomority . To end this exciting year, we had a class picnic at Hanover Park. Our Junior year started late, and though we knew we’d be in school until the end of June, the planning of the prom and the magazine sales kept us busy. It was a festive time for most of us attending the Jr. Prom. We sailed on the Spirit of Pittsburgh and danced till dawn at the post prom. In September of 1983, our most memorable year had begun. For the last time we elected Jim Reedy as President, Jeff McGraw as Vice-President, and Marla Dugas for Secretary-Treasurer. We came to Burgettstown High School with mixed emotions and we left with overwhelming emotions. We have made friends and memories that will last all through our lives. Climax Scholarship Late in February, seven Burgettstown seniors were designated by the Climax Molybdenum Company as finalists for the annual scholarship. In March these students spent the day in Pittsburgh where they had lunch at the Top of the Triangle, an interview at the William Penn Hotel, and a dinner and a show at Johnny Lounder’s Restaurant. The tension at the interview, the friends they met, the extravagant meals, and the great time they shared are all memories that the finalists will never forget. Although it was an honor just to be named one of the ten finalists, the highest honor went to Greg Phillips who was the scholarship winner selected by the committee. On Saturday, May 5, 1984 the annual Senior Banquet was held at the Meadow's Holiday Inn. The many different forms of entertain- ment provided all guests with an enjoyable evening of laughter. Richard Nixon, the Air Band, Richard Simmons and the hilarious Beach Bums were only a few of the many talented acts who added to the night's entertainment. The announcements of the Who’s Who, the reading of the traditional class poem, What Do I See by Bonnie Craft and Angie Scariot, and a sentimental speech by Mrs. Cline brought laughter and tears to all. The singing of the Alma Mater by the senior members of the chorus signalled the end of such a memorable evening. Thrust! Thrust! Prom 1984 ... Our Night to Remember ... On June 1, 1984, our annual Jr.-Sr. Prom was held on the Liberty Belle. We traveled from 6 to 10 PM on the three rivers of Pittsburgh. A buffet dinner was served, and music was provided by Phil and Bryan Pavan. One of the highlights of this memorable evening was the announcement of the Prom King and Queen and their court. Tina Jobkar, president of the Junior class, crowned Lesli Elich and Brian Bradley as Queen and King, and their attendants. After the cruise, couples attended the Post Prom held in the cafeteria at the High School. Entertainment was provided by a magician, and dancing was enjoyed by all. Prom 1984 will be a memorable evening to all who attended. Queen: Lesli Elich, King: Brian Bradley We’ve Got Tonight 158 Put your head on my shoulder ... Victory is exhilarating, but it is long over for the 1983-84 members. Their term of office was one of the toughest times of their lives. They were expected to be everyone's servant but the master of themselves in achieving in every field. They were expected to know everything about each subject and to spend all of their time planning, organizing, and doing without any investment of study or time for themselves. They were complimented and given a handshake then “confidentially1' criticized in the backroom. They were revered, admired, maligned, mimicked, ridiculed, and often snidely talked about, but most of all they were asked to lead!! They walked a tight rope between right and wrong, best and worst, greatness and pettiness, humility and pride, laughter and tears, achievements and goofs ... somewhere in the middle and from one extreme to another; but they began a journey which must not end ... the journey of leadership. This year’s task was tough because we had to start the book without an advisor, but thanks to both Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Stumpff who were willing to take the responsibility of becoming our advisors to help us continue on and complete the yearbook. As you turn the page on to another year, I hope this book has captured all the memories of the past year so you can treasure them always. And for that reason I hope you appreciate our gift from all of us on the yearbook staff, to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School and the Class of 84”. I feel relieved that the 1984 yearbook is finally completed. By being a part of the yearbook staff, and by experiencing the long hours and hard work involved in preparing a yearbook, I have come to appreciate the many people who have made it such a successful book of memories. I would personally like to thank Mrs. Stumpff and Mrs. Jones for all of their help, support, and dedication. Without you two, we would have never had a 1984 yearbook. Thank-you again for everything! (JotJujUoh Everyone involved in th production of the yearbook should be commended for their hard work and dedication. Special thanks should be extended to our advisors, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Stumpff for all their help. I hope that you enjoyed our efforts in completing the 1984 yearbook.
