Burgettstown Area High School 1983 Annual Volume Forty-three For this dedication we sought out an individual who is devoted, respected, and loved. We found five. Thank you. Mr. Gavazzi, Mr. Vallina, Mr. Havelka. Mr. Onderick. and Mr. Conley for all the exciting football games we watched on the edge of our seats. Thank you for being friends we could turn to again and again. Thank you for just being there. Mr. O has been coach- ing for 24 years and has been head coach for 8 years. He was a linebacker and placekicker at West Minster. He resides in Hopewell with his wife Diane. V A Mr. Conley has coached for 15 years. He was a defensive end for Clarion State College. He now resides in the Pittsburgh area with his wife Nancy and children Amy and Heather. Jerry Gavazzi. Jon Vallina. Terry Havelka. Rege Onderick. Rich Conley Mr. Havelka has coached for 4 years and was a defensive back at William and Mary. He now resides in the Burgettstown area with his wife Stacy. Mr. Vallina has coached for 6 years and played his college football at Slippery Rock. He resides in the Burgettstown area with his wife Ruthann and son Scott. In Memory of John Okavitch Born October 19. 1963. John Okavitch. son of Mr. Rudolph Okavitch and Mrs. Zylphy Cobb, died on May 31. 1979. as a result of a swimming accident. It is an old saying that we forget nothing. As people in fever begin suddenly to talk the language of their infancy, some are stricken by memory sometimes And old affections rush back on us. as vivid as in the time when their presence gladdened our eyes. when, with passionate tears and grief, we flung ourselves upon their hopeless corpses. Parting is death, at least as far as life is concerned, or. weeping in a post-chaisei it drops out of life one way or another, and the earth-clods close over it. and we see it no more. But it has been part of our souls, and it is eternal. Thackeray 5 Strike Scrambled the School Year TIkCHERS ARE UNIT £D As the end of August approached, the signs of school beginning looked dim. Finally the strike became official, and months of negotiations followed. The extended summer vacation left the school hall- ways deserted while students attempted to keep themselves busy at home. Sud- denly, with the court’s persuasion, negotiation came to a close, and a sett- lement was reached. On November 3. the classrooms refilled as the students and faculty set forth to rebuild the school year that the strike scrambled. The Sadie Hawkin’s Dance on February 26. 1983. was a huge success. More than eighty couples attended the gala hosted by the Yearbook Staff. Throughout the evening people danced to rock ’n’ roll blended with country-western songs spun by Little Vig. The highlight of the dance was the crowning of LI'l Abner and Daisy Mae. Previously, seniors voted for the senior guy who would reign. The main difference between a Sadie Hawkins Dance and an ordinary dance is that the roles are reversed (girls invite the guys, pay for the evening, etc.) All in all. everyone enjoyed the dance, and plans are being made to make it an annual event. I dub thee LIT Abner. 76 Students Take To Snakessss She’s got ring around the collari How will I ever untangle this? '’Whatcha see is whatcha get. A man known only to u as 'Jim the Snake Man” appeared at our school on Wednesday November 24. with his companions .. . Snakes. Jim brought with him several types of snakes including: an Eastern yellow rat snake, a coachwhip. milk snake, boa constrictor and a python. He also presented a baby iguana. Girls shrieked as snakes were brought forth and placed on innocent laps and necks. The message throughout the assembly was to know which snakes are harmful so you can avoid killing the ones who aren’t. Remember those slimy creatures just may be a friend in disguise. Want to hear a sssecret? Heave Ho A screaming crowd was on hand as the annual Donkey Basketball Game, sponsored by Student Council was held Friday. November 12. The first game pitted the senior boys against the junior boys with the final score being 10 to 8 in favor of the senior boys. The next game slated the senior girls against the junior girls with the ending score being a breathless 8 to 7 with the junior girls coming out narrowly on top. The final match was between the junior girls and the senior boys, and even though the junior gir' -ught hard, the senior boys won by a score of 8 to 4. Come on. move. Although some of the normal activities such as the in- school auction were not held due to a lack of planning time, ways of raising money included dances, bakesales. and Santagrams. This year's theme was Open Your Heart First. Posters were printed by Gretta Testa and appeared all over the community. Students, as well as members of the communi- ty, dug deep into their pockets, and most clubs made special donations, all of which contributed to the grand total of $3,873.54. The Puzzle is Complete.” After several months of vigorous work and endless hours spent after school, this book is finally complete. Only those on the yearbook staff can comprehend the time put in to creating a yearbook, and only those members can feel the satisfaction gained when the book is, at last, pieced together. This year's task was made harder by the delayed school year. It meant a shorter time to complete deadlines in order to get the book back by the end of June. But. when times got rough, the few and dedicated members were always there to give their time. To those students we extend our thanks. We also bestow our appreciation to the secretaries and custodians who constantly came to our aid. the teachers who graciously put-up with our absences from class, and the administration who permitted those absences. Above all. we render our heartfelt thanks to our adviser. Mr. Brozier. who agreed to take the book when no one else dared. Everyone involved in piecing” this book together sincerely hopes that it serves its purpose as a yearbook. That is. it successfully engraves the memories of our school year so it may be reflected upon in the future and cherished as a part of our past. And for that reason this book is presented as a gift, from all of us on the yearbook staff, to you — the Burgettstown High School and the Class of '83. The day for them began at 6:00 when about 85 seniors participated in a morning breakfast at McDonald’s. Then it was off to the Tastee Freeze to decorate their cars, and the parade began. Seniors made an appearance at the high school, but returned to tour Burgettstown to let everyone know that it was their last day.” When the tardy students finally arrived at school, Mr. Domencic greeted everyone at the entrance. Finally, after signing in, the seniors went on to a relatively normal school day. As said by one student - This was our hour to strike. Speaking for the class of 1983.
