When the new Burgettstown High School opened its doors in 1963, Mr. Clarence Patterson was among the first of the new teachers. Since he was a graduate of Burgettstown High School in '29 and further enriched his studies at Washington and Jefferson College, Edinboro State College, University of Pittsburgh, and California State College, his competency for instructing junior high reading classes is rather considerable. As a resident of Burgettstown for the past sixty four years, he has been teaching here for nineteen years. Although he held a variety of occupations before reaching BHS, teaching is his favorite profession. His off-duty hobbies include gardening, carpentry, and remodeling, which he managed to pursue even with a very busy schedule. Mr. Patterson’s philosphy of life follows the Golden Rule, and he emphasizes helping your fellow man and being reliable and honest. For your endless devotion to your school, Mr. Patterson, this book is dedicated to you. 3
What Is a School? A school is more than just a name Or a building with rooms that seem much the same. It’s more than just a place to learn Or sit in a seat and hope you will earn A diploma for taking up twelve years of space. A school’s not a game. It’s not just some race. A school must be more than these things I've said. Or its fate is sealed. It soon will be dead. Then of all the things in the world to see, What thing would give a school personality? What one thing of all would give a school worth And maybe a chance for a second birth? In my mind the answer is plain as can be. It’s the people who make a school what you see. The people, their activities, their interests, their drive Keep a school moving, make it survive. Things like football, baseball jfyorys and band, Basketball, wrestling, and clubs play a hand. The student council and cheerleaders both lend a touch. ■N orettesrnewsuapaf and yearbook add- muck.. Iministrators, secretaries, and teachers are there.
