Since he was a graduate of Burgettstown High School in '29 and further enriched his studies at Washington and Jefferson College, Edinboro State College, University of Pittsburgh, and California State College, his competency for instructing junior high reading classes is rather considerable. As a resident of Burgettstown for the past sixty four years, he has been teaching here for nineteen years. Although he held a variety of occupations before reaching BHS, teaching is his favorite profession. His off-duty hobbies include gardening, carpentry, and remodeling, which he managed to pursue even with a very busy schedule. Mr. Patterson’s philosphy of life follows the Golden Rule, and he emphasizes helping your fellow man and being reliable and honest. For your endless devotion to your school, Mr. Patterson, this book is dedicated to you. 3 What Is a School? A school is more than just a name Or a building with rooms that seem much the same. It’s more than just a place to learn Or sit in a seat and hope you will earn A diploma for taking up twelve years of space. A school’s not a game. It’s not just some race. A school must be more than these things I've said. Or its fate is sealed. It soon will be dead. Then of all the things in the world to see, What thing would give a school personality? What one thing of all would give a school worth And maybe a chance for a second birth? In my mind the answer is plain as can be. It’s the people who make a school what you see. The people, their activities, their interests, their drive Keep a school moving, make it survive. Things like football, baseball jfyorys and band, Basketball, wrestling, and clubs play a hand. The student council and cheerleaders both lend a touch. ■N orettesrnewsuapaf and yearbook add- muck.. Iministrators, secretaries, and teachers are there. Class of ’87 Seventh Grade The seventh graders, relatively unfamiliar with their new surroundings, entered our halls officially in August, 1981. Although they had visited Burgettstown High School last year during sixth grade orientation, the early days of the year were filled with wonder, amazement, and a certain amount of confusion. Most of the students were introduced to the new experiences of home economics, biology, and wood shop. Once they adjusted and got their bearings, the seventh graders elected Pam Pendeville as president. Marie Dorsey as vice-president, and Richard Rudy as secretary-treasurer. Although they have a long way to go yet, the seventh graders are already beginning to show signs that they will be ready when it comes time for them to take the reins of leadership. As president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer, respective- ly, they chose Julie Stumpff, Tina Boni, and Ray Dorsey. As expected, eighth graders traditionally begin the year in a situation that is somewhat of a mixed blessing; they have enough exposure to school life to know what’s expected of them, but they still have to prove that they can assume their role and carry out their duties. This year’s eighth graders showed that they were up to the task. They performed well in sports and other school-related activities. They show signs that next year they should be quite capable of leading the junior high and that in the future they will indeed be a class for others to try to match. After choosing Andrea Billie, Jeff Paris, and Lora Borsos to lead them through the year, they proceeded to enjoy their status as “rulers of the roost” in junior high. At the same time, however, the Freshman Class proved that they had considerable talent by supplying outstanding people to participate in such activities as football, basketball, wrestling, girls’ tennis, cheerleading, and the Tri-Lite. Although next year may prove to be a deflating experience for freshmen when they start at the bottom rung of the senior high ladder, the members of the class show evidence that they will be able to adjust and promise to become quite capable leaders in the years to come. They encountered the agony of biology notebooks, the exciting adventure of geometry, and the profound experience of English classes. They were also included in many more assemblies and dances. To help them enjoy all of this, they appointed James Reedy as president, Maureen Batinich as vice-president, and Jeff McGraw as secretarv-treasurer. No novices to school participation, sophomores greatly helped to swell the ranks in football, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, band and chorus. As juniors, they all faced seemingly endless English and history classes. Some experienced the frustration of chemistry labs while others were baffled by the mysticism of bookkeeping. Still others encountered the hieroglyphics of shorthand. As they began the annual magazine campaign to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom they chose Lisa Dunn for President. )ohn Marcucci for Vice-President, and Gretta Testa for Secretary- Treasurer. At the same time they gave Mark Martin the nod to represent them on Athletic Council. This year’s juniors have been active in all phases of school life. They have shown that they are not just marking time to be seniors. Next year the reins of leadership will not be handed to them. They will take them. John Marcucci. Mark Martin. Gretta Testa. February 2, 1982 marked a day of great change at Burgettstown High School. Six seniors were forced to uproot themselves from life at The Burg and take off to college. Because of the government’s decision concern- ing federal aid funds, (eralyn Grzebien- iowski, Larry Majoris, Man' Grace Gilbert, Mike Kvak, Dana Stewart, and Tim Ostop found themselves at Califor- nia State College finishing the school year. Since these students had to miss the second semester here, many friends missed seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter. The Class of 1982 We. as your class officers, would like to extend a hearty congratulations to our fellow seniors as we graduate from Burgettstown High School. This year was a turning point in our lives. We soon came to grips w'ith the outside world by making important decisions about colleges and the goals that we are going to strive for in the not-too-distant future. We soon became veterans at being seniors from being bitten by the infamous bug known as Senioritis. We have a lot of memories from these hallowed halls, and we ask that you remember our fellow classmates who have left us over the years. Good luck in the future, and we hope that all you attempt to do will turn out to be the best. May God bless you all. Your class officers. Miss Lozosky's student council members worked hard to raise last year's total to a fantastic S5.101.39. This brings the grand total of the past eight years to S42.642.51. One of the many events that contributed greatly to the drive was the in-school auction. Winning bidders took home everything from German Sheppard puppies to a pledge from Mr. Domensic to take one day's detention. Other fund raisers included the annual Christmas dance and a homeroom contest. Club donations also added greatly to the sum. Two of a kind. Going once, going twice ... There are approximately 85 to 100 students that are active in this club. The goal that is worked towards every year is the annual trip to Washington. D. C. In order to achieve this goal, many different products have been sold, such as: handsoap, popcorn, spices, tumblers, pizza. This club has sponsored several dances. Money has been donated to Children's Hospital. With the cooperation of Mr. Holleran. the sponsor, the annual trip has been taken for many years. Officers of the Biology Club include: Maria Valenti, president: Michele Anderson, vice-president; Traci Manni, secretary: Brian Stankovich. treasurer. CAMPUS LIFE No doubt you remember the spectacular slide show presented by Campus Life in October. There is more to Campus Life than just a great slide presentation — much more. Each year, a different event is held by the club including Pizza Pig-Outs” and Burger Bashes to name a few. Campus Life is a non-profit group designed to emphasize relationships in the family. It does this by following the Christian principles of living. Although Campus Life deals with problems and tries to find a Christian way of responding to them, it is not connected with any particular church. Students from every type of background attend. For the most part, the discussions at meetings include issues that relate to today's teenagers: loneliness, peer pressure, sex. drugs, alcohol, and family problems. Members are encouraged to express their ideas and opinions in these various subjects. Campus Life meetings don't consist of all lecture and no fun. At the beginning of the meeting, crowdbreakers are held. They may include walking on eggs, contests of all sorts, or various other fun stuff. This bunch usually holds its meetings at different members' homes. Mr. Errett sponsors this club and everyone is welcome to attend. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club consists of all senior high students and meets during every club period during the school year. The members played through a tournament - receiving points for wins and stale mates. The winner was the person who received the most points after playing all of the club members. At the final club meeting trophies were awarded to the first, second, and third place winners. Officers this year were: Rich Calhoun, president; Mark Pompe, vice-president; George Acklin. secretary-treasurer Mrs. Bohn Mrs. Price sponsored the activities. CRAFTS CLUB The Crafts Club is a group of junior high students who are interested in learning arts and crafts. During each activity period of the school year, a different project was introduced, and the students made an item using that form of art. This year ceramic Halloween pumpkins, snowmen, and Christmas mangers were made along with needlepoint key rings, sunglass cases, silk roses, and string art pictures. Ms. Nunez is the co-ordinator of the Crafts Club. This year Stacey Mitko was president along with Dee Dee Toth as vice-president and Patty Davidson, secretary-treasurer. The club went to Oglebay Park in Wheeling. WV and enjoyed a day of fun and recreation. DRAMA CLUB Here we see the Drama Club reflecting on its activities of 1981-82. The first accomplishment was the Christmas play. This year The Carolers from Clark Street was enacted. There were two casts that performed at each Elementary School. Next was a major project - the annual school play. This year The Sound of Music was chosen Each member chose a committee to work on. such as tickets, publicity, makeup or the acting part of the play. The last part of this club’s agenda was the Variety Show. Scheduled on April 14. it was a great success. Along with these activities, the members played theater games at even meeting. Improvisation, mime, and hotseat helped bring out the dramatist in everyone. The director of this group is Mrs. McAuley. Linda Gabler was president this year. Kathy Billie, vice-president. Dawn Paulin, secretary, and Maureen Batnich. treasurer. FRENCH CLUB The French Club started school with a burst of enthusiasm. In July and August, they scoured the community for ads for the football programs. As the season progressed toward homecoming, all the hardworking members created a huge float of Godzilla of which to be proud. Several money-raising projects brought in funds for donations to worthy causes. In April, the French Club honored their officers and senior members at a cruise on the Gateway Clipper. This was a pleasant ending for a good year. The officers this vear were: President. Vanessa Kristoff; Vice-President; Ann Loncaric;’Secretary. Karen Russell; and Treasurer; Laura Shaw. Mrs. Vukotich was the sponsor. HEALTH CAREERS CLUB This club is sponsored by Charlotte Wos, school nurse, and is made up of students in grades 11 and 12. The purposes this club pursued this year are: to provide learning experiences in areas of health, be aware of the vast areas that careers in the health fields have to offer, become more knowledgable in a specific health area, and also become more health conscious with one's self as well as with others. Each time the club met. a speaker was engaged to speak on a particular health field. Fundraisers include a bake sale and a dance to raise money for field trips, going out to dinner, and giving to needy organizations. Members donated their time to work on Daffodil Day for the Cancer Society. A Health-O-Rama was held where the members learned to test hearing, to assist in electrocardiograms, and taking medical histories. Some members marched in the Homecoming parade, depicting an ambulance scene. An anti-smoking play was performed for the elementary schools in November and during Dental Health month. The King's Toothache was produced. In May. this club sponsored a blood bank. Officers of the Health Careers Club included: Lisa Elich. president: Janet Ahlbom, vice-president; Gineen Bartoletti. secretary; Becky Resnick, treasurer and Nancy Abbott, parliamentarian. HI-LITE The 1981-82 Hi-Lite Staff, though faced with a great debt, managed to publish a few issues of the paper. Danielle Zelenko was the editor this year. Miss Wojick was the advisor. JUNIOR HIGH BAA The B. A. A. is an activity club whose purpose is to promote physical fitness. The members are only required to participate when scheduled. There are no fundraisers and no officers. Mr. Vallina is in charge of this bunch of guys. 104 JUNIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Burgetlstown chapter of the Junior National Honor Society has been very active this year. A year-long campaign to raise money for the visually handicapped students was begun. An induction ceremony was held on May 4 to welcome the newly-elected members to the Honor Society. Mrs. Roberts is the advisor of this organization. Officers included: Dayna Tepsic, president: Jeff Whalen, vice- president; Marian Wilkins, secretary-treasurer: and Billie Jo Wilkins, tenth grade representative. KOLO CLUB The Kolo Club is a group of young people who learn folk dances. These dances are done in a circle, hence the word kolo. The club involves students from grades 7-12 and is led by Mrs. Vukotich. The officers this year were: President: Toni Russell; Vice-President: Lori Mader; Secretary: Michele Yoho; Treasurer: Connie Bittinger; and Social Director. Angie Long. Many dances were learned this year, including: Macedonian Kolo. King Kolo. Miserloo. Cojda. and The Alley Cat. The club’s favorite was The Alley Cat or Hully Gully. Members sold Apple Darlins’ to raise money to attend the Folk Festival in Pittsburgh at the Civic Arena. The festival featured folk dances from many nations. The Kolo Club members visited the food booths, choosing their favorite delicacies from China. Latvia. Russia, or any of the 30 nationalities represented. The members themselves took part in the dancing after the formal program. The members were also asked to dance for a group of girl scouts. Together, the Kolo Club members had an enjoyable year and look forward to an even better one next year. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club is very important to Burgettstown High School. There were 33 girls in the club this year. The president was Kathy Ginier. vice-president - Kelly Conn, secretary' - Denise Diamond, and treasurer - Marcy Dias. Sales from this club included candy, pens, and bookcovers. With this money, donations were made to the Burgettstown Community Library, Children s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and various other needy causes. The library club is sponsored by Mrs. Kaezyk. SENIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY This year’s Senior National Honor Society consisted of eighteen senior members that not only obtained high grade averages but also participated in activities that benefited others; such as tutoring students in all areas of study. Dances were sponsored to contribute money to the Children’s Hospital Fund. Mrs. Insana was the sponsor and officers included. Maria Valenti, president: Andy Miller, vice-president; and Mary Grace Gilbert Michele Anderson. Secretary-treasurer. Thanks to these people and the participation of the entire student body, these worthwhile events were achieved. SEWING CLUB This year the Sewing Club furthered their skills in sewing by making various projects. One of the first projects their advisor. Mrs. Wilson, taught them was a scarecrow doll. These dolls were made of raffia, felt, and burlap fabric. After finishing this, they attempted to make a soft frame picture holder. This project was made from cotton fabric and lace. They continued improving their skills by making a long-armed, big-mouthed, fuzzy-headed puppet, plus a hand puppet which also could be used as a pot holder. The last project they accomplished was a clothed sock doll or rabbit. The officers of the Sewing Club for the 1981-82 year were: President - Julie Stumpff. Vice-President - Rachel Warner, and Secretary - Michelle Manni. SKI CLUB The Ski Club took more trips this year than ever before. When this club started a few years ago. only a handful of students in this school had ever had the experience of skiing. Today there are a couple of hundred students who have at least tried it. and quite a few who have gotten pretty good. An enrollment of eighty-five members makes this one of the largest clubs in the school, and while this may not be the richest organization, they probably have the most fun. Mr. Yothers and Mr. Colpo are in control of this group. Val Harper was president this year along with Pete Blue as Vice-President and Mike Kriznik as secretary-treasurer. SPANISH CLUB Throughout the year, the Spanish Club proved to be a most active and determined group under the leadership of Mrs. Josephine Pusateri. Officers — Tammy Link, president; Kathy Petrucci. vice-president; Renee Sarracino. secretary: Janet Harvey, treasurer — all of the members raised much money towards their trip to Italy and for other purposes. Donations to Children's Hospital and other needy causes were made. The eighteen members who went to Italy in early April worked very hard to earn money. They sold everything from Luv Ya Devils t-shirts and Joe and Gregg's wrestling match pizza to preppy shoelaces. The donuts and orange juice served as breakfast every morning was a welcome to the entire student body. SPORTMAN’S CLUB The Sportsman’s Club is open to eleventh and twelfth grade students interested in hunting, fishing, and the shooting sports. This year the club offered its help to the Pennsylvania State Game Commission during its pheasant stocking program and to the Pennsylvania State Fish Commission in its trout-stocking program as well as other worthwhile civic activities as club time and finances permitted Aside from these activities, the club spent many fun evenings shooting Trap and Skeet at the Greater Pittsburgh Trap and Skeet Range. Most of the money raised by the club was spent for the purchase of shooting components. Mr. Creighton is in charge of this club. During the 1981-82 school year. Gary Strope was elected as president. Rudy Jurena. vice-president, and Joe Petricca. treasurer. All of the members of the Sportsman's Club are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible and mature manner. Membership in this club is limited to twenty students. SPANISH III The Spanish III class differs widely from the Spanish I and II classes. Its main purpose centers around improving verbal communications in the Spanish language. During the fourth nine-week period, the club spent its time learning to prepare exotic foreign foods. The Spanish III class also worked closely with the Spanish Club in fundraising projects. All of the work paid off as this bunch went out to dinner one evening and had a party at the end of the year. Officers included: president - Kathy Petrucci. vice president - Jacqueline Ozenbaugh. secretary - Beth Filipponi. and treasurer Diana Lynn Stravroulakis. TENNIS CLUB The Girls Tennis Club was organized in the 1977-78 school year. It was given the nickname. Burgettstown Strings. The purpose of the club is to develop potential skills of girls interested in tennis, and to develop the talents of the girls who may comprise the varsity tennis team. The primary emphasis is to help everyone enjoy tennis as a lifetime sport, regardless of ability level and to make it fun and recreational for everyone. Mrs. Howard is this group’s sponsor. 105 STUDENT COUNCIL “We. the students of the Burgettstown High School Student Council, are committed to unifying all activities under one governing body, establishing a closer understanding between the faculty and students, and promoting a greater sense of responsibility, cooperation and genuine interest in the school. Many of the events and activities during the school year were presented through the cooperation of the Student Council. The activities, such as the Homecoming events. Children's Hospital Drive. Donkey Basketball Game. Special Events Days, and the running of the school store took a lot of planning and hard work. These activities and various others could not have been presented without the guidance of the officers, senior high officers included: Nancy Abbott, president; Janet Harvey, vice-president; Philimane Locy. secretary: and Noreen Zick. treasurer. Junior high officers were: Julie Mance, president: Chris Griffith, vice-president; Tracey Mitko. secretary; and Mary Jo Anderson, treasurer. Miss Lozosky is the advisor of this active group. THE TRI-LITE After years of depending upon the senior high paper for its news, the junior high school finally has a newspaper of its own - the Tri-Lite. Under the co-sponsorship of Mrs. Yanni and Ms. McWreath. the Tri-Lite filled a void in the area of extra curricular activities in the junior high, for it allowed students to vent their creativity in the areas of writing, art. and general organizational responsibility. The goal of the paper is to provide anything newsworthy and of interest to the junior high student body. This has been done — and quite successfully. Andrew Hoberek was the editor this year, along with Vince Testa. YEARBOOK Although the last club in this club directory, the yearbook certainly is not the least. The 1981-82 staff was extremely busy with the creation of this book. Along with the many hours of typing, planning, etc., a Halloween dance was held. Candy and bumper stickers were also sold. The co-editors this year were Lori Jancart and Lisa Benado. Mr. Brozier was the advisor along with Marsha Lauff as business manager. 106 The Dynamic Devils of 1981 Row One: Rich Rinehart. Our cheerleading squads did much this year even though they had a lack of funds. By sponsoring the football queen and king, they added variety to the pep rallies. The squad was very artistic: they decorated the practice and Hill Stadium fields to get our team psyched. They even fed the football players potassium (bananas) to make them big and strong. The senior high cheerleaders even became movie producers when they made a film about the senior football guys. Even though the squads had some mishaps, they were always there, cheering our guys to victory. It’s lonely at the top! 125 Cheerleaders Row One: Varsity. Michele Gerst. Carol Harvey. Lisa Paris. The years have flown by too, And now it’s time to say good-bye To special friends like you. Remember when we're out of school The fun times that we’ve had. Remember all the little things, The good ones and the bad. As graduation closes near us, It becomes easier for me to say I wish I could go back again For one more “high school day. 129 Our Final Good-bye by Sharon Allen We thought this day would never come. But now it's finally here, The time has come to say good-bye, We've made it through the year. We’ll say farewell to all our friends And promise to stay in touch. You've been there through all those special times. I'll miss you very much. We'll all be traveling our separate ways, Our high school days are at end. We'll be starting our lives anew, The future's around the bend. With our diplomas in hand And our hearts filled with cheer, As the class of '82 says good-bye, We say it with a tear. The following did: FRENCH CLUB SKI CLUB 154 TRI-LITE HEALTH CAREERS CLUB Better health through health careers DRAMA CLUB C U To the readers of this book: Now that you have progressed this far through the book, we hope that you are satisfied with the results. Much time was spent in the preparation of making this book one worth remembering. Throughout the year, we learned to handle a variety of situations, all of which will never be forgotten. Our most frustrating encounter had to have been losing the lay-out book — a vital part of the book s organization. Fortunately, it was found two weeks later. We'll never forget Katy's “baby or our first confrontation with the P. A. system. We worked under many frustrating circumstances such as an endless number of deadlines, the extremely warm shop room where we did much of our creating, and meeting during the Christmas holiday. But no matter how desperate the situation became there were always those certain people who could be relied upon. Mr. Brozier. our advisor, is most deserving of this recognition. His endless hours of help and advice helped us make it through the year. We also extend our appreciation to Rick Couch, our chief photographer, who, on a moment's notice, was always there. Thanks to the faculty and student body for the various amounts of information contributed. This yearbook helped us to grow and to realize that there are no limitations. We sincerely hope that you enjoyed our efforts. The co-editors. AiJL 'Bwado mWALSWORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY (lM
