Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1980 volume:

The Ace Of Aces The dedication of this book is to a man who always wears a smile. His shining personality radiates no matter what the situation may be. His enthusiasm brought to life two organizations that were floundering and may have failed without him. These are Campus Life and the cross country team. His dedication to these groups caused many students to become interested in them and kept the groups alive. Academic students will never forget the chemistry classes taught by our ace. How can we forget getting our socks knocked off by normality and molarity and being awakened by shouts of Hey Lucy. You goobers. and Hey Slick. Remember the labs on organic and electrochem and playing with the tinker toys, which had springs that never worked. Even though a student may never have become involved in any of these activities their life has probably still been touched by our ace. if only by the friendly Hello offered to all during class changes. For all the memories that you’ve given to us. thank you. Mr. Errett. The Student Council once again did a fantastic job with sponsoring various activities throughout the school year. Beside the usual tasks of supplying the School Store, the concession stand for home football games, and maintaining the courtyard, the Student Council also sponsored the Homecoming, winning 1st prize in the float competition with Mother Goose, the annual Donkey Basketball game, and the Children's Hospital drive. The Council this year, took on a new task when they sponsored the Arkansas Gems-Faculty Basketball Game which benefited the Burgettstown Community Library. The final event of the year for the Council was the yearly trip to Washington. D.C. which was enjoyed by all who attended. Sr. High officers: Cristol Stavroulakis (Pres.). Teresa McGraw (V-P). These students, trained in child care, help the three- and four-year olds to develop physical and mental skills. Sessions include story time, an art lesson, snack time, group activity, and free play, where the children are allowed to choose between water play, the jungle gym, the block area, the homemaking area, painting and the puppet area. The nursery school is not only beneficial to the preschoolers, but also the juniors, who learn lifetime skills. 103 The Hi-Lite Burgettstown Area High School Vol. 1 No. 10 March 6, 1980 Editor-in-Chief Maria Dun Ed,,or Ang, Brancazi yplsI Kathy Sargcr ’,r,bu ° Mary Jo McGra, Reporters Marcy Meneely. Although Burgettstown did not field a girls' track team. Barb and Mary took the initiative to work on their own time with both girls aiming to make it to the state finals. The W.P.I.A.L. AA Qualifiers were held on Wednesday. May 7. at Washington High School stadium with weather conditions very undesirable. Under these poor conditions Barb managed to place 5th in the javelin, qualifying her for the W.P.I.A.L. AA championships held at North Allegheny High School. Mary’s put in the shot-put was an excellent mark, though it didn't qualify her to move on to the championships. These championships were held on Tuesday. May 13th. for both AAA and AA schools. Barb's throw of II4'9” in the javelin gave her a very respectable 6th place finish and nearly qualified her to travel to the state finals held at Shippensburg State College. Anthony advanced to the W.P.I.A.L, singles tournament, held at Mount Lebanon High School, to lose in the quarterfinals. Anthony's brother, Chris, also participated in the tournament held at Washington, but lost to a Peters Township player in the semifinals. In section doubles play, Sam and Chris Maropis joined together to win the section title, but lost in W.P.I.A.L. play. The Burgettstown tennis team, itself, did extremely well this year, losing no section matches. They captured the section crown from Peters Township, who had held this honor for the past several years. The team was defeated in the quarterfinals of the W.P.I.A.L. tournament by Mount Lebanon. Congratulations on a fine season and good luck in the upcoming year. 162 Homecoming Floats 164 With the theme of fairytales, four organizations participated in the float building contest. Student council won first place with their float of Mother Goose. For the third consecutive year the class of 1980 won second place this year with their float of the Hobbit. The float of Winnie the Pooh captured third place, built by the Junior class. Finally French Club received fourth place for their float of Pinnochio. The football game started on time as the anxious audience huddled under their umbrellas. Nearing the halftime show, the clouds began to break and the sun shone through. Darla Jobkar was crowned Homecoming Queen by John Dunmire. Treasurer of the Student Council to the tune of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
