Bill had been active in sports from the first time he picked up a bat in little league baseball until his sudden death. His love for sports, in which he excelled, earned him positions on the football and basketball teams through his school years. While playing football in ninth grade, he scored five touch- downs in a single game. This was equaled by his ability to earn a berth on the varsity basketball and baseball squads. With his friendly and outgoing personality. Bill won many friends. His friendly smile, easy-going manner, and tactfulness were assets which helped him to hold many important positions. He was president of his class when a sophomore, and the lead character in the class play, Girl Crazy, when a junior. Bill will be missed here at Union by all his friends who knew and loved him. So, in a sense, the flame has not gone out, for in our hearts the flame still burns. ‘2 Close the door remembering that things can never be the Same again. When you come back on other Days with a mind clothed in different gar- ments Everything you knew will be Gone. You'll look around, but the Life that once was yours will belong to someone else. Adjust your tie; tie your shoe. You'll identify a bit and think about the friends you Thought you knew so well so long ago. Take one last glimpse now, of the things that mean so Much. A water fountain on the second floor; A desk that says You plus Me ; The empty gymnasium where you played basketbal I Are fading into oblivion Turn around and view the si lent halls and say Goodbye. Class In September, 1964, the Class of '70 first entered the halls of Union High School, not as confident sixth graders but as very terrified seventh graders. We soon got over our fears and adjusted to our new routine by electing class officers: President-Mike Drazick, Vice-President-Don Donati, and Secretary-Treasurer-Renee Drazick. Our class sponsor was Mrs. Hanna. The class party proved a very enjoyable evening. We returned the following year as eighth graders with an established place in the student body. The following were class officers: President-Wayne Bolling, Vice- President-Gary Bywaters, and Secretary- Treasurer-Nancy Caleffe. Our class party was a success, thanks to Mr. Patterson, our eighth grade sponsor. The American Legion Award was presented to Rosalind Rozmus and Wayne Bolling. In the fall of '66 we returned as the confident leaders of the junior high. We elected the following officers: President- Wayne Bolling, Vice-President-Pete McMahon, and Secretary-Treasurer-Ron Call. The annual freshman hayride was on a cold and wet Friday night with a dance in the cafeteria afterwards. Our class spon- sor was Mrs. Vukotich. We entered our sophomore year under the direction of Miss Tiano, our class advisor. The following were chosen to serve as class officers: President-Bill Pra- ta, Vice-President-Pete Stracci, and Sec- retary-T r ea s u r e r-Mary Scouvart. We showed our imagination and leadership by being the first class to enter a float in the Homecoming festivities. The float, en- titled Golden Anniversary, won first prize. Making their first appearance as majorettes in the Blue Devil Band were Janet Florio, Andrea Mikula, and Joyce Scariot. Pat Clark, Therese McKee, and Helen Yaworski cheered as Varsity Cheer- leaders while Nancy Caleffe, Chris Campa, Cathy Geffert, Mary Margaret Homitz, and Pat Tucci were B-Squad Cheerleaders. On March 7 the annual Sophomore Party was held with great success. In August we began our junior year under the leadership of Mr. Brozier. We elected the following as class officers: President-Frank Chilensky, Vice-Pres - ident-Frank Roberts, Secretary-Treas- urer-Sharon Fernandez, and Representative to the Athletic Council-Pete Stracci. In History October we received our class rings. Show- ing once again enthusiasm and leadership, we began our magazine campaign, with Mr. Beeson as advisor. It was a great success. The annual Junior Party, held in April, was enjoyed by all. Our play, Girl Crazy, was held with great success, thanks to the direction of Mr. Smouse. The highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom held in May. The theme was Roman Holiday. The success was due to the many long hours of work put in to making it an en- joyable evening. A great deal of credit must also be given to Mr. Latella, the prom sponsor. In September 1969, we entered the halls of Union for the last time as we started that memorable year as a senior. For the last time we elected class officers. They were the following: President-Pete Stracci, Vice-President-Frank Chilensky, and Sec- retary-Treasurer-Sharon Fernandez. Our class advisor was Mr. Pusateri. The first big event of the year was Homecoming, at which Mary Scouvart was named Queen. The following were at- tendants: Sherry Bartoletti, Nancy Caleffe, Renee Drazick, Sharon Fernandez, and Joyce Scariot. Senior majorettes of the year were Janet Florio, head majorette, Sharon Fei— nandez, drum majorette, Andrea Mikula, Joyce Scariot, and Mary Scouvart. Senior cheerleaders for the year were Cathy Gef- fert, head cheer leader, Nancy Caleffe, Chris Campa, Pat Clark, Therese McKee, Pat Tucci, and Helen Yaworski. On October 24, 1969, after the McGuf- fey football game, Dennis Pavan and Bobbi Jo Truax were named Football King and Queen. They were crowned by Mr. Brozier. The happiest event of the year for sen- iors was winning the Sportsmanship Trophy from Fort Cherry High School. The Senior Class Play, held on January 15-17, was a great success. The play, On Borrowed Time, was directed by Miss O'Hern. As the year is coming to an end, we are filled with mixed emotions. One part of ourselves is very sad about leaving, and the other is happy at the prospect of entering a new life. Although we will split up and go our separate ways, the memories of the class of 1970 will remain with us forever. Kinney In Memoriam Brenda Gates was a wel Miked model type student, who seemed reserved to some, yet quite polite and anxious to please. Her many friends and class- mates remember her as a kind person and friend, a very hard worker who was ever striving to do her best. As an active member in the Junior high Band and president of her home- room, Brenda set forth an influence and image that will not soon be forgotten. During her off school hours, she attended regularly the Campfire Girls, being an active member for two years. Respect ran high for her, and so her fellow students dedicated a bulletin board to her in March of 1969. The sorrowful loss of a friend and classmate left many with just memories. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her, yet those memories will live, for they are too precious to be forgotten. 62 H.R. H.M.3-Mrs. Wilson-Seated-(I. to r.)-E. Lauff, R. Lashhorn, C. Nancy Caleffe Sharon Fernandez 105 During halftime ceremonies, mem- bers of the court were escorted to the field where they waited in suspense. The attendants were announced, and Mary Scouvart was crowned queen by Dennis Pavan, Student Council President. She was also given a football signed by the team. 106 Homecoming 1969 The sixth annual Homecoming was held on Saturday, September 27. The parade, kicking off the day's events, began at noon and was led by the band. Various floats and cars bearing the Homecoming Court and guests of honor, the 1941 foot- ball team, followed. On arriving at the field, the floats passed by the judges' stand, and members of the court were introduced. The court consisted of Sherry Bartoletti, Nancy Ca- leffe, Renee Drazick, Sharon Fernandez, Joyce Scariot, and Mary Scouvart. Their escorts were Frank Roberts, Phil McQuain, Jay LaRocka, Jack Edwards, Chuck Mc- Ginnis, and Larry Capozzoli, respectively. At halftime, Mary Scouvart was es- corted to the center of the field by Larry Capozzoli and crowned Homecoming Queen. At 9:00 pm, a beautifully decorated gym was the setting for the Homecoming Dance. As in the past, plans and decorations were made by the Spanish III Club under the supervision of Mrs. Pusateri. The theme of Shine on Harvest Moon was carried out in all the decorations, creating an atmosphere appropriate to the season. Club members transformed the eagle used on the Homecoming float into a turkey and used a live tree as the main decorations. Behind this scene was a large moon. Silhouettes covered the halls where the couples were seated, and candles provided the light for each table. Refreshments were served in Room 1. Silhouettes and streamers provided the background for the Van Dels, orchestra for the event. Two theatre tickets were awarded to Charlie McGinnis as the door prize. As the evening drew to a close, the candlelight faded, and with it, the autumn atmosphere of the 1969 Harvest Ball. 112 113 You said you're going steady!? We'll beat'em; we got Snoopy behind us. Since when did they put stairs there? 114 Who? Yeah, he's back there playing cards. We want a victory! Many beautiful door decorations carried out the Christmas spirit. The Drama Club Play, It Happened This Way, which takes place in late Au- gust, is a modern day version of a missing wrist watch taken at a party earlier that summer. During Acts I and II of the play, two highly imaginative and fictitious ver- sions of the disappearing watch are acted out. However, during Act III the true story of the watch is finally brought out into the open. At the play's end, everything is set- tled in time . Cast Leads: Mrs. Cameron . , Mr. Cameron . . Celebrate! 125 Shhhhhhhhhhh! Quiet! Hey, Mary, look! 1969 Junior-Senior Prom The Raven Blues The 1969 Junior-Senior Prom was held on a very warm May 23rd evening. The theme for the evening was Roman Holiday. On entering the gym, each couple received a program in the form of a scroll and a miniature wine glass, both carrying out the Roman theme. At the entrance to the gym, couples passed through a rose trellis decorated with huge red roses. Roman pillars lined the walls with live trees in the back- ground. Eight large pillars bordered a red carpet which led up to the throne. On each side of the throne stood a miniature Roman statue. A fountain stood in the center of the floor surrounded by a pool of water. At 11:00, Patty Sprando and Rich Gino- sky were crowned king and queen by Mr. Mervosh, and Patty received a bouquet of red roses. Terry Porchiran and Cnarlie Tabone, and Diane Wass and Pat Meneely were chosen as attendants to the royal couple. Over 100 couples danced to the music of the Raven Blues until 11:30 Then as the last couples drifted out of the dance. Coach Bodie Nicksick retired as head men- tor. His assistants were Regis Onderick, John Colpo, Richard Conley, and Robert Piacenza. The team was plagued by injuries the entire season. Union still showed a strong defense led by middle linebacker Pete Stracci and tackle Dennis Pavan, and a fine offense led by Tim Nicksick. The Blue Devils wound up the season with three strong wins over Peters Township, McGuffey, and Fort Cherry, the latter being the first victory over the Rangers since 1962. Under the guidance of coaches Jim Matalik and Jim Tershel, the U.H.S. cagers finished with a 10-2 record in section 12B and 12-9 over- all. The 10-2 mark was one victory shy of bringing a section title to Burgettstown. The return of three lettermen, Tim Nicksick, Francis Shannon, and Ned Rid- dile, was responsible for this fine sectional record. The monogram winners were Dave Barto, Phil Brancazio, Frank Dellaria, Lou Maslyk, Tim Nicksick, Francis Shannon, Ned Riddile, Don Lounder, and Dave Waltl. With an undefeated freshman team coming up, the 1971 Blue Devils should end the quest for that elusive section title. Record Union Opponents 63 S.S.
