Our Alma Mater towering over all Urging us ne'er to let our banner fall. Pledging our courage our song shall ever be Hail. Alma Mater, praise be unto thee. Dedication A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. To you, Miss Bigger, the Sen- ior Class of 1969, with deepest re- spect and appreciation, proudly dedicates the '69 U. We feel the lives you have touched will indeed have been af- fected by your patience, under- standing, and sincerity. In working with seventh and eighth graders, you have not only taught the es- sentials of English but also instil- led in your students a greater de- sire to appreciate more fully the entire realm of literature. Your ability as a teacher has been equaled not only in the field of music but also as a capable leader and sponsor of the Gamma Tri-Hi-Y, the position which you held for two years. We hope that the dedication of this yearbook will express our sin- cere gratitude for a job well done. 2 Table of Contents Seniors Page 4 Undergrads 40 Organizations 70 Student Life 98 Sports 122 Administration 152 Ads 178 4 Seniors Class History In September, 1963, the class of '69 first entered the halls of Union High School. Since we were the first seventh grade class ever to attend the Junior-Senior High School, we entered with mixed emotions of awe, ex- citement, and a little bit of dread. As our very first officers we elected Tom Patterson, Mike Yesko, and Tina Mader as President, Vice President, and Secretary- Treasurer, respectively. Our class spon- sor that year was Mrs. Hanna. Later in the year our class party was held, and every- one had a good time. The following year we returned, con- fident of our place in the student body. We elected three well-known boys as our officers: President, Don Bywaters; Vice President, Bill Gilbert, Secretary- Treasurer, Danny Ray Peters. In winter, the class party turned out well thanks to the help of Mr. Patterson, our eighth grade sponsor. That year the American Legion Award was presented to Rhonda Foster and Don Bywaters. When we returned as freshmen, our class was enlarged not only by the students from Our Lady of Lourds School but also by the coming of the Hanover students. The following officers were elected: President, Don Bywaters; Vice President, Bill Gilbert; Secretary-Treasurer, Russ Deer. The tra- ditional Freshman hayride was held on a rainy October day. It was followed by a dance featuring a magician. Our class spon- sor that year was Mrs. Vukotich. During the fall of '66 we crossed the seemingly unfordable gap which separates junior from senior high. The class offices were filled by the following: President, Chal Mahoney; Vice President, Ralph Ciabatteri; Secretary-Treasurer, Lynn Alouise. Lucinda Hall, Cassie Paniaha, Denise Vuksanovich, and Judy LaPosta made their first appearance as B-squad cheer- leaders. The sophomore party was held and turned out to be a great success with the help of Miss Tiano, our class advisor. Our junior year was started by electing class officers, who were as follows: Bill Gavazzi, President; Linda Gavazzi, Vice President; Patty Sprando, Secretary- Treasurer; Jay Hicks, Representative to the Athletic Council. Our class sponsor was Mr. Brozier. In October we became proud owners of our junior rings. The class party was held in the cafeteria with everyone dressed as hippies. Later, in the presen- tation of the junior play, Hip Hippie Hooray, the hippie idea was again illus- trated. For the first time the Junior-Senior Prom was held at the George Washington Hotel, and everyone had a wonderful time. In September, 1968, we returned to Union High for the last time, eager to ac- cept our position as the school leaders. We elected class officers for the last time. We chose Rick Fernandez as President, Karen Pescho as Vice President, and Patty Sprando as Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Pusateri was our class sponsor. The first festive event was Home- coming at which Rhonda Foster was crowned Queen. The attendants were Joyce Chastulik, Linda Gavazzi, Tina Mader, Karen Skarupa, and Rosemary Roner. The Journalism Class Dance was held October 18 following the Beth-Center game. Rick Fernandez and Tina Mader were crowned by Mr. Brozier as Football King and Queen. The sports events were very peppy, thanks to Denise Vuksanovich, head cheer- leader, and Luci Pusateri, assistant head cheerleader. The senior majorettes of the year were Rhonda Foster, head majorette, and Lucinda Hall, drum majorette. Other majorettes were Terry Porchiran, Diane Wass, and Gerri Wetzel. Our play, Green Valley, was pre- sented February 20 and was a huge suc- cess. It was directed by Miss O'Hern, who was assisted by Kris Riddile, student di- rector. In our six years at Union, we, the class of '69, would like to think we made some contribution for the betterment of Union. We would like to go down in Union High history and be remembered as a class of achievement, cooperation, and leadership. Although we do not know what the future holds in store for us, we hope that our six years at Union have helped to prepare us to do our best in whatever fields of endeavor we choose. We also hope that this yearbook will serve to remind us of the fond mem- ories of Union, which we will cherish forever. 6 Senior Class Officers 7 Karen Pescho, Vice President; Patty Sprando, Secretary-Treasurer; Rick Fernandez, President. The Sophomore Class began their first year in senior high school by selecting the following class officers: President- Frank Kokoskie, Vice-President-Andy Kokoskie, Secretary-Treasurer-Beverly Lewis. After much work on the part of the of- ficers and students of the Sophomore Class under the direction of Miss Tiano, class ad- visor, the class party was held. This party proved to be one of the most popular events in which the tenth graders participated. Now that they were in senior high, these students found many new areas open to them in the educational and recreational activities of the school. The boys went out for football, basket- ball, and other athletic teams. The most popular clubs for the girls were the Nurses' Club, Senior High G.A.A., and the Future Teachers of America. If this year was a preview of what to expect of this class as senior high students, we are sure that they have a promising fu- ture at Union. 47 H.R.B.C.R.1-MISS BARTHEM-Seated(l. to r.)-M. These boys aided greatly in the efforts toward the success of their class's activities. The Class of 72 did not have the tra- ditional Annual Freshman Hayride. How- ever, under the supervision of Mr. Carson, who took the responsibility of being the Freshman Class advisor this year, they did have a Freshman Class Party on November 15. The lively event was held in the gym and refreshments were served. The highlight of the party, which was named The Harvest Happening, was the music played by The Upperhand. Upon entering Union High School for the first time, the Class of '74 was faced with many decisions. In the beginning of the '68- '69 year they elected Steve Fish as presi- dent, Pam Smith as vice president, and Kevin Cowden as secretary-treasurer. The seventh graders quickly adjusted to high school life and fell into step with the rest of Union High. They displayed their school spirit by participating in the sports of basketball, football, and wrestling. They also participated in clubs, Junior High Band and the Junior High Chorus. Under the supervision of their class advisor. Miss Dalverny, they planned and held a class picnic, which was a great suc- cess. An observation of the seventh graders and their actions indicates that they are one of the promising classes that will graduate from Union High School in the future. 64 H.R. Gym 3-MR. The musical, written by Sandy Wilson, is a satire of the musicals of the 1920's and is set in a French boarding school for girls. The main theme of girl- gets-boy is enhanced by subplots of revived romances. The musical traces a day in the life of Polly Brown, a millionaire's daughter at the boarding school. In one day Polly finds love, thinks she has lost it, and regains it again. The subject of Polly's is Tony Brock- hurst, a millionaire's son. On the same day Polly's father comes to the school to visit Polly and while there rekindles an old love for Polly's school mistress, Madam Dubonnet. Afterthe reviv- ing of this old romance and the budding of new ones, the play ends on a happy note, all living happily ever after. The chorus was under the direction of Mrs. Barbara Dunmire and was accom- panied by a pit band under the direction of Mr. Regis Fechter. The choreography was done by Mr. Raymond Beeson. The 1968 prom commemo- rated Union's Golden Anniversary. This was the first time in recent years that the prom was held outside the school. This resulted from a request by a majority of the juniors and seniors. The suggestion was approved by the school board; therefore the prom was held at the George Washington Hotel, Washington, Pa. The ballroom proved an impressive setting and romantic atmosphere for the many couples attending. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen at the royal throne, which was located at the far end of the ballroom. Albina Filipponi and Jim Philips were chosen queen and king by pop- ular vote of the junior and senior classes. Barb Scouvart and Frank Korpos, Peggy Rotta and Pete Strope were chosen as at- tendants to the royal couple. R. Donald Hall, Senior High Principal, crowned the royal couple. A heartfelt thanks is extended to the businessmen of the community who pur- chased ads to help defray the cost of this book. In addition, a very special thanks must be given to Mr. Malcolm McCrerey and Eugene Vosburg, Jr., yearbook photograph- ers, and to Mr. Regis Brozier, the year- book advisor. Without the time and effort that they expended, this book could not have been possible. The yearbook staff hopes that the 1969 U will be a book that the students will long cherish and never forget.
