THE “U” Presented by The Senior Class Of 1964 UNION HIGH SCHOOL Burgettstown, Pennsylvania PREFACE An old dance program, a bit of blue crepe paper, the dried petals of a rose—from such trivia are memories made. The little things, the unimportant events most often taken for granted, sometimes prove to be infinitely precious. You glance through your yearbook and somewhere you find the picture of your club. In the far corner is a familiar face. The name, the time, the place, are just a memory but the warmth of the smile remains. You live again for the moment those times filled with dates and tests and dancing and homework all thrown together in ordered confusion. You remember and smile. That's what a yearbook is for—to evoke a memory and perhaps a smile. In September of 1959, the Class of 1964 entered Union High School as a group of confused but excited eighth graders. As we walked through the school's doors for the first time, we started a journey that would take us five years to complete. It wasn't long before friends were made, and we were on our way to establishing these well-remembered years in our mind. Our first duty as a class was to elect our class officers. This we did in choosing Tom Testa as president; Bernard Pirih, vice-president; and Carol Ann Smiley, secretary- treasurer. At the end of this first year, four deserving students were the recipients of the American Legion awards. Those students were Carol Ann Smiley, Candy Vladich, Gary Wilgocki, and James Holt. With an increased enrollment, we returned as freshmen in the fall. The students' choice of class officers proved to be Bob Ward, president; Patty Edwards, vice-president; and Charles Scopel, secretary-treasurer. In the spring of 1961, several freshmen were inducted into the Junior National Honor Society. The highlight of the year was the hayride we enjoyed in November. After our trip over the countryside, we returned to the school for refreshments and dancing. As sophomores, we returned to elect our capable class officers, who were: Eugene LaPosta, president; Barry Alvarez, vice-president; and Patty Lynn Rotta, secretary- treasurer. Many of our boys proved to be real athletes as they began entering their favorite fields of sports. The cheerleaders' squad increased with the addition of Judy Baronio, Janice Dudeck, Ruth Harris, Barbara Nokovich, Candy Vladich, and Carol Jo Wytko, Nadine Ciabattari and Sharon Labishak marched for the first time as majorettes. The sophomore party was well attended and considered a big success. Our junior year was one that we will long remember and cherish. We started the year by electing Patty Lynn Rotta class president; Charlie Viloski, vice-president; and Carol Jo Wytko, secretary-treasurer. Class rings were ordered and the members of our class participated in the annual magazine campaign which was quite successful. Jeannie Orenchuk was chosen to attend the Keystone Girls' State College at Clarion, Pa., for one week. Five of the junior girls added their talents to the majorette squad. Those girls were: Rudelle Filipponi, JoAnn Porchiran, Loraine Richey, Patty Lynn Rotta, and Carol Ann Smiley. On March 21, 1963, the day before the Junior Play cast was to be announced, Union High School went up in flames. This catastrophe only deepened the memories we had of our first years as high school students. Fortunately, our new school was nearing completion and we were able to continue our classes within two weeks. That spring we thus became the first juniors to hold the annual Junior-Senior Prom in the new school. The cafeteria was very cleverly decorated to fit the theme, Oriential Holiday.” The prom was well attended and a good time was had by all. We eagerly entered our senior year in September of 1963, about to embark on the final mile of that long journey we had started as eighth graders. For the last time we selected class officers. Gary Wilgocki was elected president; Eugene LaPosta, vice- president; and Linda Taylor, secretary-treasurer. Our first major activity was the presentation of our delayed Junior Play Pillow Talk.” Under the direction of Mr. Brozier, the cast received many laughs from their unrehearsed ad-libbing. Our football team showed their excellent skill through a very successful season. Barry Alvarez received the treasured McElhaney award for outstanding ability on the gridiron. Patty Lynn Rotta and Eugene LaPosta were crowned football queen and king. Our Senior Play, The Mouse That Roared,” was presented under the direction of Mrs. Harris. Our second Junior-Senior Prom was quite successful. UNDERGRADS JUNIORS ■ Class of 1965 JUNIOR OFFICERS: Left to Right, M. Pendervllle, P. Spotti, J. Pompe. The Class of 65 returned to the new Union High School after a long summer's vacation. They began another successful year by selecting very capable officers in the persons of Judy Pompe, president; Pete Spotti, vice-president; and Peggy Penderville, secretary-treasurer. Jim Birkhimer was se- lected as junior representative to the athletic council. During November the class sold magazines under the sponsorship of Mrs. Pusateri, and by hard work they went over their goal of $2500. by $330. BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right, B. Canning, J. Cunningham, R. This fine group of students entered Union High School for the first time last September. For their class officers they chose the fol- lowing: President, James Taylor; Vice Presi- dent, Gerald Strope; Secretary-Treasurer, Harold Strope. Their class advisor, Mr. Patterson, did a wonderful job in organizing committees for the eighth grade annual party, which was a Christmas party. They had a lot of Christmas decorations and everybody had a wonderful time. Many of the eighth graders displayed great interest and ability in various school activities. Excelling in scholarship, club ac- tivities, and sports, the eighth graders have a promising future ahead of them in their future at the new Union High School. BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right, J. The newest group of students to embark upon the Union High School scene is the Class of ”69”, the seventh graders. This is the first time Union High has ever had seventh graders in its enrollment. This is also a big change for these students as they now change classes instead of remaining in one room as in previous years. They eagerly adapted themselves to this new routine and fell into the groove of being junior-high stu- dents. They chose as their leaders: Tom Patterson, president; Mike Yesko, vice- president; and Christine Mader, secretary- treasurer. With the friendly and helpful as- sistance of Mrs. Hanna, class advisor, these officers organized the class' first affair, a party, held in the early spring. The seventh graders became better ac- quainted with their fellow classmates by en- gaging in many activities. The boys parti- cipated in junior-high football, basketball, and wrestling. The Gamma Tri-Hi-Y and Junior F.H.A. proved to be popular clubs among the girls. By being attentive in classes and working faithfully, these seventh graders show great promise scholastically as many of them reached the honor roll. Their remaining years at Union are sure to be successful as many of them display great interest and ability. I BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right, R. Camp, H. Diamond, J. Chastulik, E. Farren, L. Alouisc, J.
