C 1 If I 2 Vjl f I 57 During our days at Union High School, student life has played a prominent part in our strive for education. Appropriately, we have selected student life for our theme, As We sail along over the seas of knowledge, our title pages depict our life as students at Union High School. In order that we might fulfill this student-life theme, We have arranged our OFBWOFJ book so that each division page represents a separate pause in our journey. We sincerely hope that this yearbook will gladden the hearts of every graduate and undergraduate with memories of the past. We of the staff have enjoyed our work on the composition and management of this book, and with a justifiable feeling of pride we now present to you the U for nineteen hundred and sixty-three. BARBARA LUNGER For your aid and friendship, we, the 1963 graduates of Union High School, proudly dedicate our yearbook. You were always ready to do your part. Whenever wehadproblems, you were always ready to listen and help us think them through to a solution.. Through this guidance and patient understanding, you have influenced our approach toward more difficult circumstances that, when solved, help each of us to become better students. lt is true that we sometimes tend to for- get the aid that the teacher unselfishly gives towards our education. It is difficult for each of us, individu- ally, to express our thanks to you for this help. However, the dedication of this year- book is our way of expressing our appre- ciation to a person whom we feel has done much for us and Union High School. With the help and understanding of the upperclassmen, they soon settled down to their new routine and ,became acquainted with their fellow classmates. At the first class meeting officers were elected for the year. These officers were: Ted ervosh, president, Jerry Gavazzi, vice presidentg Paul Tepsic, secretary-treasurer. j Mr. Hanna was the capable advisor of the class. l The first social activity attempted by the class was the Halloween party, which was held in the high school gymnasium. It was well attended, and a good, time was had by everyone. One of the main attractions of the party was the awarding of prizes to those who were dressed in the best costumes. Carol Gindrich received a prize for having the prettiest costume, John Eiubalak, for the ugliestg Joseph Pribish, for the most originalg and George Swanik, for the unniest. h . Many of the eighth graders displayed great interest and ability in the various school activ- ities. The year found four members out for basketball and four members out for wrestling. The class was also ably represented by eighteen members in the band and in the chorus. Many joined the different clubs andrwere very active. One of the most popular among the girls' clubs proved to be the Gamma Tri-Hi-Y. U Th Freshman Glass started the year well by electing the following class officers: Pres- ident, teven Lydickg Vice-President, James Ozimeckg Secretary-Treasurer, Ronald Johnston. Mrs.f Y otich, their faculty advisor, spent much time and energy to help make the year suc- cess u . Alll of the students showed themselves to be full of school spirit, and interested in extra- curricular activities. This up-and-doing Freshman Class decided early in October to have a hayridel merry ride was enjoyed by all as they rode to the Harris farm, laughing, singing, and sholuting. Appetites were good by the time they reached the bonfire. When the cider and hot dogs di appeared, the group gaily returned to the high school gym for dancing. Th class members showed that they were ready to be in senior high school next year and to make a distinguished record for the class of 1963. . 1 This class of sophomores came back without any hesitation to pick up their school activ- ities where they had left them before the months of summer vacation. They were quite differ- ent from the class of inexperienced freshmen they had been during the last year. Instead of the shy, nervous attitudes, they assumed calm, refined, and poised actions. Thqly chose the following class officers: President, James Ozimekg Vice-President, Ronald gohincsto 5 Secretary-Treasurer, Ray Lounder. The class advisors were Miss Tiano and Miss co . The sophomores proved themselves worthy members of the clubs which they joined. At all the games their voices could be heard, loud and clear, encouraging our team to victory. The sophomores looked forward to their class party on April 13, where they had a very good time. The Junior Glass started a successful year with the election of these capable officers, Ronald J ohnstong Vice-President, Jerry Gavazzig Secretary-Treasurer, Betty Jo ed Mervosh was elected as Junior representative to the athletic council. Girls and boys were selected for member- ship because of their special ability in reading music and in blending their voices and tone quality. - Their hard work and practice proved worth- while when they presented the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter programs. The groups per- formed for the Baccalaureate, and Graduation exer- cises. Each year representatives are chosen to attend performances of Junior, County, District, and State choral groups where they blend their voices with those of many other students from different schools. This lack of action does not lessen the members' interest in football. Although the boys were inexperienced, they continuously showed a determination to learn everything possible about football. They gained experience steadily throughout the season as evidenced by improved scores and skill. This experience will prove of great val- ue when these members replace the graduat- ing seniors now representing the varsity team. Though the won-lost record amassed by the squad was not remarkable, the members showed frequent sparks of top-notch ability. Much credit goes to our Board of Edu- cation for their excellent management of the internal affairs of our school system. They provide equipment, select the teachers' and personnel, direct the finances of the educa- tional program, and are responsible for the maintenance of our schools. The principal job of the Athletic and Activities Council is to make plans for the sports season. They determine school policies, and by so doing they keep alive the good name and high ideals of our school. Throughout the many years it has existed they have been able to accomplish it. .!4fLfefic 8' .xdcfiuifiw ounci LEFT TO RIGHT: A. Sedlak, E. Caleffie, C, Fox, Dr. J. Tinney, T. Mervosh, G.
