ggl Burgettstown. Pennsylvania 3k, V 3 o r eu o r J The lazy days of late August saw us all returning to school. Fall was ushered in to the tune of the magazine campaign, the football season, the Friday night dance, all of which yielded many a happy occasion. Thanksgiving and Christmas slipped bv bringing snowflakes, frost, a lovely Sno-BallQueen and her handsome escort. January, February, and March brought severe storms, but spring soon arrived bringing graduation and leaving us all with wonderful memories. Di The dedication of this yearbook is our way of expressing appreciation to a person whom we feel has done much for us and for our school. You have been ready always to take your place and do your part in making each school day a little more pleasant and rewarding. You have kept yourself young with your interest in young people. You have never lost sight of the classroom in your plans for gathering information to use the next school term. It is difficult for each of us, indi- vidually, to express our thanks to you. However, it gives us great pride to join together in dedicating this, our 1961 U, to you—our teacher and our friend, Miss Theresa Tiano. 3 Oh. my aching back! Sweetheart! This won't take Long! Approximately 140 pupils, ranging in size from elfs to normal humans elected Lynn Hill as their President; Jack Kimberland as Vice-President; and John Tasz as their Secretary-Treasurer. With October came the first social gathering in the form of a Halloween party. Prizes as the prettiest, ugliest, most unusual and the most original were presented with Lana Garcia as an Indian princess, Ralph Vigilotti as a ho-bo, and Holly Scott with Charles Webster together as a hound dog, the respective winners. As the school year passed on eager eighth-grade girls initiated the Gamma Tri-Hi-Y. September of 1957 brought an increased enrollment to the freshman class, which seemed to give added vitality. Advised by Mr. Welch, the class chose Lynn Hill, President; John Tasz, Vice-President; and Pete Blue, Secretary-Treasurer. The class social event again came on Halloween as a Hay Ride. A number of students achieved class recognition in the dance ensemble which was composed entirely of freshmen and as U.H.S. representatives to District and County Band. Fall of 1958 found an eager sophomore class at Union. Class representation on the football team and in the band was good. The class Secretary-Treasurer was Karen Kosem, the Vice-President was Lynn Hill, the President was John Tasz. Class participation in school activities increased with seven girls; Gloria Boni, Lana Garcia, Harriet Holt, Karen Kosem, Ruth Martin, Gari Napolitano, and Roxanne Tucci contributing as majorettes and the sophomore cheering squad composed of Alice Alverez, Rosemary Marra, Susan Michalski, Mary Lou Nemeth, Becky Petrucci, and Sandy Sprando saw its first action. Spring was greeted by ’’April in Paris” as the theme of the class party. At this affair the first class king, queen and court were chosen. John Tasz and Pamela Plate reigned as king and queen. Their attendants were John Cunningham, Karen Kosem, Jack Kimberland, Molly Malone, Rosemary Marra, and Ronald Noah. The Junior class and 1959 saw the class blossoming under the Presidency of Janet Lukon, Vice- Presidency of John Cunningham, and the Secretariatship of George Bundy. As the junior class participants in sports increased. Lynn Hill was elected class representative to the Athletic council. Carol Malone and Carol Gavazzi were chosen as majorettes. In the first class business venture, a magazine campaign, the largest total of magazine sales in the history of Union was accomplished and in honor of this great achievement a celebration was held in the gym which featured a girl-boy dodge ball game. Class rings were eagerly ordered in December and then the ’’long wait” for their spring arrival. ’’Mars Moods” set the theme for the class party. The king and queen of the milky way were John Tasz and Karen Kosem attended by John Cunningham, Denise Vermuelen, Jack Kimberland, Pamela Plate, Ralph Scott, Patty McKee, Bob Kuzior, Lana Garcia, Tom Vincenti, and Becky Petrucci. After one of the most impressive class tryouts in recent years, Mr. Brozier started to put a class play together. Publicity Mad” was the title and we remember a few of the cast who went publicity mad in the process. The cast party was held after the third and final performance. At the party, Mr. Brozier was the recipient of a gigantic box which contained a toy lawnmower. The celebration was ended on a cool note many of the attenders will testify, with everybody freezing in Ped Phillips truck trying to find a couple of parkers. Our most crowning achievement came in May when we began decoration of our prom. By much work the gym was turned into a southern plantation which was decended into through a rose-covered trellis. Branches draped with Spanish moss hung above as we danced around a water fountain that shot tiny jets of water up and down into a reflecting pond inhabited by gold fish. We triumphantly named the entire setting, Return to Terra. The leaves were beginning to change their shades when we returned to school as seniors. John Cunningham, Blaine Sayre, and Alice Alvarez were chosen to occupy official class roles. Football season brought with it the week-end dances and the final home game at which we witnessed Frank Lawrence and Roxanne Tucci crowned Football King and Queen of 1960. The McElhany Football Award went to John Cunningham. Then came the Presidential Election of 1960 and the giant campaign and rally sponsored by the seniors. Next was testing time as we worked through college boards, employment and IQ tests. Finally spring came and heralded our final few days at high school. So, in a long tradition, we the class of 1961, will soon receive our diplomas and march into life’s service, but as we look back we won't forget our friends, nor our happy days shared here at Union. 28 TtacCesiysuzcU i Class Officers and Advisor: Mr. Brozier, G. Danek, C. Boiler, C. Jeffrey. The class of 1962 returned to Union High School August 29, 1960, ready for work after the long summer's vacation. At the first meeting of the class the Juniors elected their class officers. They are: Carl Jeffrey, President; Charlotte Boiler, Vice-President; and George Danek, Secretary- Treasurer. During the early fall months the class sold magazines in order to raise money for future activities. The magazine campaign, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Pusateri, proved very suc- cessful. This year, as past years, found the class well represented in °ll the clubs and athletic groups of the School. In April, the class staged its annual play. The play, under the direction of Mr. Brozier was well attended and offered many moments of enjoyment to those in attendance. The high point of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom, took place in the spring. It was a well-attended, gala affair. BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right, J. Jones, C. Esno, F. Kabo, G. Kemp, K. Homitz, S. Lounder. This class of Sophomores came back without any hesitation to pick up their school activities where they had left them before the months of summer vacation. They were quite different from the class of inexperienced Freshmen they had been last year. Instead of the shy, nervous attitudes, they assumed calm, refined and poised actions. They chose the followingclassofficers: Presi- dent, James Ozimek; Vice-President, Ron Johnson; Secretary-Treasurer, Ray Lounder. The class advisors are Miss Tiano and Miss Scott. The Sophomores proved themselves worthy members of the clubs which they joined. At all the games their voices could be heard, loud and clear, encouraging our team to victory. The Soph- omores looked forward to their class party on April 13, where they had a very good time. As these Sophomores have progressed in mental, physical, and spiritual growth in the past year, so shall they continue to develop until they, too, will one day be responsible for caring for the affairs of their country. The class of '64 started its freshman year with enthusiasm. It chose as its officers Robert Ward, Charles Scopel, and Patricia Edwards; as President, Vice-President, and Secretary- Treasurer respectively. The help of its faculty advisor, Mrs. Vukotich, was greatly appreciated. On a very chilly evening in November the members of the Freshman class enjoyed a hayride. After traveling over the countryside they returned to the school gym, ate heartily and danced for the remainder of the evening. The students joined in extracurricular activi- ties such as Student Council, Junior Honor Society, and various clubs. A group of girls, with the help of Mr. Reich, formed a ninth grade chorus. Many of the boys w’ho participated in sports give promise of one day becoming star athletes. If this year was a preview of what to expect from this class, we're sure they will succeed in later years at Union High. BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right, J. Baronio, M. Dalverny, N. Ciabattari, C. Dunn, P. At the first class meeting officers were elected for the year. These officers were: Judy Pompe, President; Ray Kokaskie, Vice-President; Pam Spanogians, Secretary-Treasurer. The first social activity attempted by the class was the Halloween party which was held in the high school gymnasium. Most of the eighth graders attended and everyone had a good time. One of the main attractions of the party was the awarding of prizes to those who were dressed in the best costumes. Many of the eighth graders displayed great interest and ability in various school activities. Excelling in scholarship, club activities, and sports, the eighth graders have a promising future ahead of them in their remaining four years at Union High School. The council met approxi- mately once a month to discuss school issues. The Student Council is composed of the presi- dents of each class and the president of each home room. High praise should be given to the Student Council for helping make the school year a big success. The refreshment stand is under the supervision of Mr. Kimberland. Assisting him are volunteer students and Mr. Shearson, who acts as cashier. One performance was given in the iifternoon on March 1 to the student body and on Thursday, March 2 in the evening for the public. The play was a mystery comedy which contained many ’’odd situations and a number of ’’odd characters. This play, as have plays in the past few years, tended to pull away from the typical high school production. Mr. Brozier, in his selection of a play, chose one best suited to the natural resources of the Union stage. Practice was tough for the first few days and many candidates were unable to stand the pace. However, as time passed, the team began to take shape. The opening game with Madona found Union on the short end of a 6-20 score. The following week found the team still suffering from the shock when they met Waynesburg and lost 0-19. Chartiers traveled to Burgettstown and to victory in a close, hard-fought contest. The score was 0-13. Then the team came to life and defeated Jefferson-Morgan by a 13-6 tally. The California team came to Burgettstown, but the game proved to be another heartbreaker. It ended with Union again on the bottom of a 0-13 score. The mighty Brentwood team traveled to Union and the following week. In this battle the team suffered a few injuries, and with the unlucky streak of Union, we lost 6-14. In the following game, Union traveled to Cumberland. The time had finally arrived as the Blue Devils edged Cumberland by a 13-6 margin and won the game. Then came the last game of the hard-fought season. Union played Hopewell on their field but was tumbled by the score of 19-40. The final record showed two wins and seven loses. J.V. PENNSYLVANIA Senior Class of 1961 Union High School Burgettstown Area School District Burgettstown, Pennsylvania Dear Graduates: Congratulations to each and every one of you. An early life's goal has been reached now at the time of your graduation from Union High School. The preceding 12 years, more or less, have only opened the door for adult successes. The skills and knowledge acquired here are a small measure of the necessary foundations you will need for your selected careers. 1 charge you to remember the many people who have contri- buted to your total development to date. Your families, whose Joy is only surpassed by your own Joy. Your teachers, whose aspirations for your continued success was preceded by their insistence for your best efforts. Your classmates and school companions, whose competi- tion and encouragement stimulated your successes in school life. Your Supreme Being, whose Divine Guidance cannot be totally assessed here and now. Thank them all. Good luck to all of you. Your responsibilities to uphold the traditions of our community, our school and our country are great. The future decisions necessary to provide a better life for all will not be easy. I personally have faith in your abilities to uphold all that is good. May success be yours, all ways. is Sincerely yours Dr. James J. To The Class of 1961s Looking back, it hardly seems possible that four years have gone by since you entered Union High School and that now you are about to graduate. However, the completion of tltose four years marks the attainment of your first educational objective. For many of you, graduation from high school means the end of formal schooling as such, others will enroll in institutions of higher- learning. I have found this to be a most cooperative and enthusiastic class, one which has entered wholeheartedly into school activities. This was a'class which liked to do trings and was interested in the welfare of the school. I have every reason to be proud of your accomplishments. As you leave Union I hope that you will be able to profit by some of the lessons learned here as a student. I trust also that, in the years to come, you will have reason to appreciate the patient and untiring efforts of your teachers. Finally, I would like to congratulate you upon your graduation from high school. It is my nope that in the trying years ahead each of you may find a successful and happy future. May God bless you all. Sincerely yours, fe 5+ojitL- R. Donald Hall Principal School d3oard LEFT TO RIGHT: L. Grecco, G. Hanna, C. Latella, E. Caleffie, V. Wiegmann. J. Smalley, Dr. Tinney, D. Hall.
