IR LI, G SMU E Darkness was hoverlng over the cactus dotted plains Coyotes, crouching in the wind rustled prairie grass, began to howl. Weary from the day's long journey, we, cowboys, drowsily almost in a daze, watched the smoke from the old campfire curling upward to the heavens We were not sure whether we were completely transformed into another world or just dreaming, when we saw certain apparitions appear in the smoke Who is that tall, dark and handsome Casanova that has come into view' It's Sir Cecil Kelly, the distin guished dramatist, who has become famous as a result of act ing the leading role in the play, 'Rosalie Betty Haworth, a receptionist for a dentist' I didn't know she intended to be a receptionist Oh' I see Her husband is the dentist Coach Ruby Holladay seems to be having a little trouble Her team has just lost a basketball game by one point A forward missed a free shot in the last second of the game Too bad' Ruby, that just 1sn't like your champ1on ball team As one of the cowboys threw another log on the low burn ing fire, Reverend Franklin Wright became visible just long enough to announce the text of his sermon 'What ls Becoming of This Younger Generation? Vhat's this? A newspaper with bold headlines' Mr Bill Zerbe has been appointed to the President'e Cabinet as head of the Department of Agriculture It also reads that in his new job, he expects to put into practice the many things he learned in the Union F F A It seems that another member of the class of '47 has made himself a name ln the field of drama A talent scout made the great discovery, when he saw Loyd Holladay act in the high school presentation of the play, 'Elmer Today, Loyd is well on the road to success as a comedian A former debate team authority, Evelyn Poplin, has sev eral things to keep her busy these days, such as housework and learning the carpenter business Pigs Why, it's the county fair! But who is that gen tleman walking among all the pigs with a pencil and paper in hand Well' What do you know? It's none other than Alfred Meier judging the prize swine In the smoke there appears a magnificient art museum The name Charlotte Simpson is attached ln the corner of the most beautiful picture along the gallery, but drawing is only a part of her profession She is married to a former Admiral of the U S Coastgusrd and has three small Admir a s Wilma Parnell has made quite s fortune smiling for toothpaste advertisements, while her roommate, Helen Hard quisite New York fur shop The campfire died down to a few smoldering coals and ashes Each cowboy drifted peacefully off to sleep, their minds contented with the pleasant thoughts that another graduating class of UUIOU School had made good J.. fjf Q ,jf X f Z 0 Q Q . xv' I 'lx lxi Nineteen tklrty five was a big year for this world The class that would later revolutionize the activities of Union High started to school the class of '47 That was twelve long years ago, but many remembrances come back to us of the old academy The grades passed by until finally in September 1945 we found ourselves in high school Our class consisted of twenty eight green freshmen Ruby Holladay, Charlotte Car ter, Patsy Cosper, Jessie Elvington, Lou Nell Garoutte, Alscy Goodnight, Virginia Hunter, Pauline McArthur, Betty Lou Orsburn, Vilma Parnell, Evelyn Poplin, Virginia Shelton, Lois Stevens, Norma Letterman, J T Jones, Cecil Kelly, Jim Key, Jim Lester, Alfred Meier, Herschall Parnell, Betty Ha worth, Charlotte Simpson, Helen Hardcastle, Harold Robinson, Robert Root, Clyde Stevens, and Hill Zerbe Evelyn Popl1n served a successful term as class pres1dent Mr Boevers was our helpful sponsor Nineteen members were so proud of their records freshmen that they came back to try their luck as sophomore students Delores Garten, Mattie Benson, Franklin Wright, and William Owen entered our school with sophomore rankings Mrs Lafon was our sponsor and Betty Haworth was elected to reign as president As sophomores we had a very unusual and interesting class party It was a formal occasion with the entire fac ulty invited This type of party proved to be a new exper ience for each of us and most entertaining September 1945 only fourteen enthusiastic juniors en rolled We lost Jim Key, who moved to Callfornia, an gF1H8d B111 Woodring, who later joined the Air Corps B11 Taylor was president and use Ruby Robertson was our sponsor who competently advised and directed our full schedule of The Junior class was host to tre Senlors and faculty ir annual Junior Senior Banquet The theme of the night cleverly patterned after the Dutch Everyone enjoyed their evening in Holland Our Junior play emerged a great success Even surprised with our acting ability The play was act comedy entitled, 'The Ready Made Family The senior year, the year that brings down the on pleasant school-day experiences, has arrived year has been full and happy, with much knowledge It has been a combination of seriousness and gaiety mixed in the proper proportions Every undertaking of our class, whether it resulted good or bad, has merely accustomed us to the bitter and sweets of living The class play, the Jun- ior-Senior Banquet, and celebra'ing the Senior legal Sneak day ' have been only a part of our activities. This well-rounded year has been made possible by the guidance and efforts of all our teachers, of M Schubert, Our superintendent, and M Grove, our Senior advisor owe much to these people and our remaining friends who have h91P0d PYOPare us for the biggest school of all---The school of L1f9 the was present we were a three curtain But our gained Il!
