It was time for the 1986 Redside football season to begin its daily doubles. 7:30 AM players were arriving in the locker room. Practice was to begin at 8:00 AM. When that time came around there were 15 players standing around looking for the rest of the players. So the season began with only 3 returning seniors to show the younger kids the ropes. By the time the first game rolled around there were 3 more players and 2 of them were seniors. The Redsides improved with every game and were very eager to play. By the 7th game of the season the team had grown to 22 players. As fate would have it the already small role call was cut by 8 due to injuries. All of the players were very happy to get to play as long as they did with such small numbers. 1. Assistant Coach Mike Lawson. Dan Thomas. Sam Woodside. Kelly Law-son. Eric Petersen. Pat Tolentino. Volleyball Although the win loss record of the 1986 team was less than perfect, they were a team with a lot of heart. Through many disappointments they kept on doing their best and kept their chins up. Losing only two seniors, they will be ready for action in the 1987 season. The win-loss record does not clearly indicate what a successful season they had. After graduating 8 seniors the previous year and having only 2 players over 6’ tall, the small, but fast Redsides outlasted the majority of their opponents. The Redsides were unable to make the district tourney due to a very tough Western half of the league. While they were unable to make the top two teams in the West half, they won all but 1 of their games against East teams. Coach Howey easily summed up the season, “It was a weird season; we lost so many close games. If we’d have won some of them, we would have been in the district tournament.” The J.V. team also enjoyed a successful season. The young Redsides continuosly gained victories with a well-rounded offensive threat. Mrs. Torland pushed the players up to their potential and tremendous improvements among the players were witnessed throughout the season. 1 Basketball stats. L to R . Mark Peterson. Tnna Mitchell. Although the girls lost their first game against the Weston McEwen Tiger Scots, thus ending the season, they were not without pride. As Coach Schackman put it. “It was a great season. We won when we had to. worked hard, played together. and gave it our best shot. That’s all I asked for.” The Redsides did win when they had to. They were tied with Riverside with the tie breaker on their side which meant they had to win just as many as Riverside. It all came down to three games. Knowing that they had a good chance of going to district, the girls traveled to Heppner to take on the Mustangs. The Redsides lost by four points in over time but were not without hope. During the next three games, the Redsides beat each of their opponents. Including a season highlight game against Sherman County. UM . | 1. Instead it was held on November 29. 1986. The cheerleaders spent many long hours decorating the cafeteria to transform it into a mystical place. The theme for Homecoming was “Up Where We Belong”; decorations were balloons and clouds. The choosing of the Homecoming court took on a different twist last year. There were, like usual, a freshman, sophomore, and junior princess, but last year, there were two senior princesses chosen. The queen was chosen from the two. The court was: freshman. Seven AFS students visited Wasco County during International Days: Hui Don Shao. from The Peoples’ Republic of China; Azhar Abu Zarin, from Malaysia; Alba (Patty) Sanchez, from Honduras; Nick Gorson. from The Republic of Ireland; Susana Fernandez, from Spain; and Laurence (Lori) Gaist, from Switzerland. International Days were held on April 23 and 24. During these two days there was a potluck dinner, a dance, a softball game, and time set aside to get to know the exchange students better. For the first time at W.C.U.H.S., the entire student body spent the day in various classrooms talking with the exchange students on a small group, rotation basis. The informational exchange was excellent. We all thank Mrs. Lewis, the advisor, and Tina Justice. AFS President, for organizing two great days. 1. 1986-87 AFS Club members: back row. The number of students on the staff made everyone put their minds in gear and be creative for both the annual and the newspaper.
