In the pre-conference play, the Redsides captured the Championship trophy in the third annual Redside Invitational Tournament by defeating Wahtonka and Corbett by lopsided scores of 59-35 and 52-22. In the Ranger Invitational, featuring international competition, the Redsides received the runnerup trophy, losing only to the touring Australian team from Sidney, Australia in the championship game, 59-54. In die other non-conference games, the Maupin crew defeated Dufur by margins of 65-45 and 53-33. After Christmas Vacation the Redsides opened their quest for the elusive Columbia Basin Conference Championship by clobbering Sherman County 64-42 and edging Umatilla 50-45. The following week the defending league champion, Weston-McEwen, moved into town thumped the Redsides 71-57. Then came a string of seven consecutive victories over league rivals. First, it was a 68-45 win over lowly Riverside; then came the crucial weekend against bitter rival Heppner and always tough Pilot Rock. Against Heppner the scene was the same as a year ago, instant replay of the one that didn't go , which sent the game into over-time--but fortunately for the Wasco County crew, Mike Enterline found his shooting eye and led the team to a very, very gratifying 60-56 win. After a 7 hour bus ride home (5 a.m.), the Redsides recovered for a 55-50 win over the Rockets. Other victories followed: Condon 53-44, Sherman County 51-43, Stanfield 59-36 and Umatilla 59-44. Again it was Weston-McEwen who ended the win streak with a 56-55 overtime win over Coach Schackman's squad. The Conference schedule was completed with a string of 5 straight wins which vaulted the Redsides into a tie for the league title. Included in that string were victories over Riverside 81-53, Heppner 61-44, Pilot Rock 56-43, Condon 70-55, and Stanfield 70-42. Having earned the distinction of being Columbia-Basin Conference Co-Champion, the Redsides headed into the District 7-A Tournament with their sights set on a state tournament berth. The opening game of the tournament saw the Redsides defeat the strong Umatilla Vikings by a score of 49-40. The stage was now ready for the championship game of the District 7-A Tournament with the Redside's foe none other than the old nemesis, the Weston-McEwen Tiger-Scots. At the final buzzer, the Maupin squad had pulled out a hard fought-44-39 defensive battle. Thus, the Wasco Country Redsides had won the District 7-A Tournament Championship and also a share of the Columbia Basin Conference title. But by a quirk of fate (or was it a complete error in judgement by the District Basketball Committee of Administrators! ?) the Redsides had to play the Tiger-Scots again to determine who would go to State. The end of the road had come as the Redsides were defeated 56-42. Although the team did not make the trip to State, it was a year of great accomplishment. Besides winning various trophies, the Redsides compiled the best win-loss record (21-4) in the history of Wasco County Union High School. The team was rewarded for their outstanding season by being rated the 10 team in the State in the Oregon Journal Coaches' Poll. Many individual honors were also bestowed upon Redside players. Jerry Paulson was named 1st TeamAll-Confcrence as well as 1st Team All-District 7-A Tournament. Randy McCorlke was named 2nd Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-District 7-A Tournament. Leland Anderson was named Honorable Mention All-Conference and 2nd team All-District 7-A Tournament. Dennis Barnett was named honorable mention All-Conference. Won so much—gained so little. V BASKETBALL Mr. Schackman giving orders. Paulson scores two! Paulson shoots his patented jump shot. Jeiry Paulson looking to pass. Lee Anderson shoots over Condon player. The unity of the Redside team was vividly shown in the above picture. The team actually passed up shots in order to pass to someone else who they felt was more open. There has never in the history of Wasco County Union High School been a team that was as close as the six of seven players that comprised the varsity squad, They did everything alike and you can ask anyone that followed them and find out how proud our community was of the team. The unity of the team helped lead them to the greatest record in the history of WCUH 21-4. ABOVE: Lee Anderson and Ray De Clue run up the floor as Dennis Barnett waits for the ball.
