This year's Redside basketball team finished the season with a won-loss record of 9-13. However, the record is not a true indication of the basketball throughout the year. For the most part, the varsity team played excellent basketball throughout the year. The only one-sided losses suffered by the Redsides were to McEwen, who finished in 3rd place in the state tournament. Poor foul shooting, not poor play in general, cost the team a berth in the regional tournament. Special awards were given to the players at the annual awards banquet. Pat Chastain was named Hustler of the Year ; Jim Puckett was named Most Inspirational ; Randy McCorkle received the Free Throw Trophy; Leland Anderson, who was the 5th leading rebounder in the conference, was named Most Improved and Best Defensive Player ; and Tom Ambrose, a 2nd team All-Conference star, was awarded the coveted Most Valuable Player trophy. Wrestling 1973 As there was not a wrestling program during the 1971-1972 school year, this was a building year for Wasco County. Many of the team members were unexperienced prior to this year. Even so, all of them met with at least some success. This was undoubtedly due to the enthusiasm on the part of everyone involved on the program. Our team captain was Doug Woodside, and a more dedicated and efficient captain we could not have had. Doug ended the season with an 8-7 record, even after facing extremely good opposition at the District Tournament. His leadership was appreciated by the entire team. The District tournament was held at Joseph and several teams competed. Doug Woodside wrestled out to the semi-finals before being defeated by the two-time State Champion from Enterprise. Scott (J. W.) Cameron also earned team points for us when he decisioned his first opponent. Following the season, the team went to Seattle to watch the nation's outstanding collegiate wrestlers compete in the NCAA finals. All of us enjoyed this annual highlight of amateur wrestling. The Outstanding Wrestler award this year was awarded to Doug Woodside, and the Most Improved Wrestler went to Rob Dahlgren. Next year, we hope to have more student participation. With a few more out, we can be very competitive. 53 School (ABOVE) Shelly Robison takes time for a picture in the typing room. Even with all these things against them the team did very well with the material it had to work with. The team improved with every game and it was aided by the leadership of Randy McCorkle and Tom Ambrose, who were very steady performers. The team is very much looking foreward to next year.
