Turnover and poor foul shooting at times cost the Redsides a chance for another outstanding season, although the Redsides were tabbed by Coach Shackman as having a pretty good season, considering our step up in competition.” One of the highlights of the season occurred in the opening game of the year. The Redsides upset Gilchrist, a team which Steve Duhrkoop sett it off for a foul shot. Tom Troutman goes up for two points. eventually won 5th place in the State Tourney, 71-68 The following night the Redsides had to settle for runner-up spot in the Culver Invitational Tourney, suffering a 72-53 scrubbing at the hands of the Prairie City Panthers. The following weekend proved to be very worthwhile as Wasco County dumped Dufur 80-59 and Cascade Locks 62-58. Then disaster struck in the form of the Corbett Invitational Tourney. The Redsides had to settle for Tom Troutman jumps fora rebound. Ron Walker breaks the paper on the run through.. 4th place at the expense of losses to Alsea 58-56 and Cascade Locks 68-59. In a warm up to league play the green and gold crushed the Wheeler Falcons 77-62 Participating in the Columbia Basin Conference for the first time in history the Redsides were very impressive in posting wins over Sherman and Stanfield by scores of 57-46 and 71-64 respectively. The following weekend was just the opposite as arch rival Condon infiltered a narrow 55-51 decision on the locals in what was one of the Redsides poorer showings of the season. The following night the Redsides made their first basketball trip ever to Pilot Rock and one that will not be forgotten as the Rockets bombarded their visitors 82-47. The Wasco County loss string ran to five in a row with losses to Heppner 69-57, McEwen 62-56 and Umatilla 76-74. Then the Redsides started on a streak of their own with repeat wins over Dufur 90-77, Sherman 68-59, and Stanfield 81-66. (con't on page 70) J.V. Basketball: b.r. They are Coach Hedrick, Ben Cox, Don Sanders, Vernon Patton. and Steve Addington. The 1970-71 Redside wrestling team was severely crippled by the graduation of many fine seniors from last years State Championship team. The dual meet record was an all-time low of 2 wins and 10 losses, beating Wah tonka J. V. and Colton. Only 10 students turned out for the team which was another all-time low and to make matters worse 5 of those boys were injured, which set another dubious mark of distinction. The outstanding wrestler of the year was Benny Cox (a Junior at 136)who placed third in the District Meet after losing a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in overtime in the Semi-Finals to qualify for the State. Steve Addington (Sophomore at 178) was also third in the District meet winning his first match of the season to capture the third spot. Don Sanders (Junior at 148) wrestled two fine matches at District but lost both in close decisions. Vern Patton was the only Senior (at 19) on the team this year and he also lost two matches at District to finish out of the running. The other wrestlers who earned their letters but were injured and did not wrestle at District were: Bill McGinnis (Junior at 141), Randy Delco (Sophomore at 168), Doug Woodside (Sophomore at 123), and Rob Cox (Freshman at 106). Other wrestlers not lettering were Sid Moss (Junior at 148), and Scott Cameron (Freshman at 106). the Ben Cox is moving his way to another victory. Although short on numbers, this year's Redsides Baseball Team pulled together for a second place finish in the Columbia Basin Conference. Sporting only eleven players the W.C.U.H.S. Varsity posted a 5-4 league record and 5-6 overall record. The Redsides opened up with a 3-0 loss to a strong White Salmon Team. They then suffered consecutive losses to league champion, Sherman County, by scores of 6-2 and 3-1. Finally the Redsides vaulted into the win column with an 8-6 victory over arch rival Condon, then dropped two close decisions to Heppner Mustangs 5-3 and 7-6. Once again White Salmon proved too much for Coach Schackman's crew handing them a 5-1 defeat. The Redsides then made it a clean sweep over the Condon team by sweeping a doubleheader at Condon 8-3 and 9-2. The season ended with a 4-2 loss to the Sherman Huskies. Rick Ellis and Bill Cox have him stopped between second and third. Rick Ellis almost had him out on third. Leading hitters on this years squad were Bill Cox (.553), Jak Ewing (.389), and Henry Hachler (.379). Leading fielder was Bill Cox with a perfect 1.000 fielding average. At the annual awards banquet. Bill Cox was presented the Most Valuable Player Award and Henry Hachler was given the Baby Ruth Award. ” Hre-game warm-up. Track Handing off to Ross Alsup in the mile relay is Roland Matteson. The 100 meter hurdles were either 30 or 33 high and will probably be 33 high next year. The WCUHS girls track team increased in number this year to 21 girls who competed in 7 meets. The season was highlighted by Jeannie Zumwalt, a senior who placed fourth at the State Track Meet in the 100 meter hurdles and fifth at State in the long jump. Jeannie broke her existing school record in the long jump with a 15’ 10W effort. Jeannie was also the top point getter with 65 points. Lynn Lewis, a junior, was next with 45te points. Another highlight of the season was winning the second place trophy at District. Eight girls qualified for the State Track Meet in six different events. The Annual Staff records these happenings and events to capture the history of the year. Putting together the annual is hard work but we have fun working together and seeing all the pictures taken during the school year. Each member of the annual staff spent many nights after school going through negatives, developing film, cropping and trimming pictures, drawing layouts, editing and writing copy, gluing the final work on “boards”, etc.,etc.,etc.,(continued) Kathy Chamberlin choosing pictures for a section in the yearbook. Kathy Chamberlin and Curtiss Mayhew finishing up the student section with the missing pictures. Curtiss Mayhew finding the filed negatives which match the proofs. Kathy Morelll filing negatives. One of the members said, 7 like working on the annual because I get to know everyone I work with better and get to know the whole school life better.” Another said “I just enjoy doing the work - - it is fun.” We wish to thank all the people who helped us make this a better annual. Special thanks to Mr. Bob Paffrath of the American Yearbook Company who came to Maupin many times to work with us, which helped a lot. Mr. Jack Briggs of Modeme Studios in Springfield also helped by taking pictures and developing them. The annual staffers that helped to make this annual were Curtiss May hew (Sr.), Kathy Mo-rellifSr.), Carol OldsfSr.), Kathy Chamberlin (Jr.), and our advisor Miss Engelfried. These people hope that this as an accurate record of not only the facts but also of the feelings. 111 Kathy Morelll cropping a picture for the yearbook. Senior Index cont.
