Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1969 volume:

In keeping with heraldic traditions and attempting to coordinate historical symbols with educational achievements and goals, the following heraldic seal represents the personality of the school and community. The covered wagon portrays the early settlers in this area who came across the Barlow Trail. The mantling surrounding the shield consists of sheaves of wheat, one of the primary agricultural crops of the area. Dividing the shield in thirds is the famed Deschutes River center in center and left, and the Barlow Trail lower right. The top left third represents the lumbering and sawmill industry. The school mascot in the top right third symbolizes the outstanding fishing and related recreation in the area. Below the lamp of learning, are five entwined circles representing five areas of education in academic, athletic, fine arts, vocational, and social. The circles also symbolize the high school district, Maupin, Pine Grove, Shaniko, Tygh Valley, and Wamic. We the annual staff dedicate this yearbook in memory oj Carl and Glen Peterson. We started. Full of new hopes. New spirits. Ready to go. Ready to take on Anything; everything. We soon learned Not everything Turns into triumph. But the effort Is seldom wasted. 2 i 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Administration, Faculty, Staff Organizations, Activities A thletics Classes Advertisements Acknowledgement Index 3 We went on, Admitting our faults, Our failures. We were still undaunted. Our hopes only slightly diminished. We all had fun. Together or alone. Funny times, serious times. All went together hand in hand. At the end We were all looking forward To summer, no school. Our hopes had been Completed, or had been finished Completely. Our spirits were deflated. All had been done. 6 Looking back now Brings out those memories Of things we all had said And done. mfir V , Late in the Winter of 1968, a faithful group of men and women met to declare their support for Wasco County Union High School by approving a school budget containing proposals which would enable much needed growth and a teachers' salary schedule which stands above most other schedules throughout Oregon. School board members have lent their support to Mr. Oppliger and the student body in numerous other ways as well. Without the fine job of the school board members, the faculty, the secretaries, cooks, custodians, and bus drivers, Wasco County Union High School would cease to exist. Many fond (and maybe a few not-so-fond) memories are all tied up together for all the students who have attended Maupin High during this past year and to those memories this section of the yearbook is dedicated. The Wasco County Union High School band, though the smallest in many years, was very successful. They were the first band ever to take an overnight tour in the history of the school. Leaving at seven the morning of April 1ST they played their first concert at Arlington, then played the second time that day at Umatilla after lunch. Following the Umatilla program they travelled to La Grande, where they visited Eastern Oregon College and spent the night. The following morning the band left La Grande and performed their first program of the day at Elgin, followed by lunch and an afternoon concert at Enterprise. The Enterprise program was the last of the four programs and the furthest point in the trip from Maupin. Strengthening their tired souls with the aid of huge quantities of root beer and other similar potions the band returned to Maupin late that evening. Mr. Chamberlain, the band director, said that the trip was extremely successful. In addition to the tour the band also played in the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. Mary Ann Lindley and Debie Endersby at a car wash earning money for the band trip. The Wasco County Union High School chorus was one of the largest in the school's history totalling almost eighty members in the second semester. The chorus began the year rather slowly as the 36 freshmen learned to sing, and improved until the first time they sang in public at the Christmas program. In April with the aid of several experienced singers who transferred into chorus second semester the group travelled to the Mid-Columbia Music Festival, where they sang with eight other schools in a large chorus. In May the chorus put on an exchange program in Dufur without the aid of the band, and then followed this program with their part of the Spring Concert. This year chorus was scheduled every day for a full credit, in a regular class period. In other years chorus was held during the activity hour three times a week, for half a credit. It was a beautiful night and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The prom was held on Saturday night April 5, 1969. We again had music by the Banshees a band from the Condon High School. The Prom King was chosen Steve Butcher and the Prom Queen was chosen Sylvia Snodgrass. After the noise parade, and yelling contest in the gym, all who attended went down to the Homecoming Bonfire to await the announcement of the queen and her court. Co-captains Rob Brittain, Mark Holmes and Dave Miller announced the queen and her court on October 17, 1968. Virginia Woodside was named queen; and the princesses were Teri Oliveri, and Michaelene Peterson. The royal court would reign over the Homecoming activities of the following weekend. The first game, played, at Maupin, saw John Day a strong A-2 team, beat the home eleven by a close score 13-6 and on September 20 the Redsides traveled to White Salmon, Washington and went down to defeat for the second consecutive week 7-6, even though the visitors dominated the game statistically. The third game brought the first victory to Wasco County Union High School when they humbly defeated class A-2 Cresswell 40-6. October 4 brought to town the mighty Vale Vikings, a perennial power in the A-2 ranks. The mighty Redsides put up a gallant effort, leading all the way, till the final two minutes, when all state fullback, Kirk Adams scored from 40 yards on a broken play. All in all, it was probably the best game for several years played on the local gridiron. With a 1-3 record the Redsides started on a five game winning streak, against league opponents. The first victim of this streak was Stanfield, at the losers home field. The score 13-0. On Saturday afternoon October 19, a large homecoming crowd saw the scrapping Redsides come from a 7-0 half-time deficit, to defeat McEwen 20-7. Umatilla, always a tough opponent for Maupin, was once again, sky high for the game. Trailing 14-19 with less than five minutes. Dave Miller lateraled to Rob Brittain for a 58 yard touch-down play to bring sweet victory to the Redsides 20-19. T, ip. ,, T, ... , ... The first annual Dad's Night crowd saw the Maupin boys roll to an easy win over weak Culver 36-7. November 8, a memorable date in the annuals of Redside history, saw Maupin blast hapless Condon 59-7, to finish the league undefeated. The following Saturday Maupin was the site of the State Quarter-final game which matched the Redsides and a very good, Elgin team, winner of the Eastern District. It was a hard-played game with teams playing like the true champions they were. With Maupin leading 14-13 via two, Dave Miller to Alan Mayhew touch-down passes and two Greg Hayes extra points, the Elgin team was threatening on the Redside 10 yard line with about three minutes left when Bill Cox picked off an Elgin aerial on the one yard line, and the local team ran out the clock to win 14-13. November 23 was a bad day for the Redside waiTiors and the many faithful fans who followed them to Klamath Falls for the state Semi-final game with Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart scored two touch-downs the first half which proved to be enough as the Redsides could get only one touch down to count in the second half, having three others called back because of penalties. The one coming on an 83 yard punt return by speedy Paul Franklin. The season was ended right there for the Redsides as they lost to Sacred Heart at 13-6. Sacred Heart went on to tie Corbett for Co-championship of the state. This year the Junior Varsity football team almost evened up their record after losing the first three games by overwhelming scores. The team came back with typical Wasco County toughness and a new offense to win the last two games of the season. Lack of a quarterback hurt the offense considerably so an adjustment was made to a short punt formation. Most of the team consisted of freshmen with no prior football experience consequently the defense didn't hold up well until experience and toughness prevailed in the later stages of the season. In the next four years the experience of the freshmen team of '68-'69 will be valuable to future varsity success. 32 © o Coach Schackman was always there too, and always talking to the spotter on that notorious black phone--relaying vital information that helped keep the Redside strategy minutely up-to-date. AVI Quarterback Dave Miller hands off a pass to May hew downfield while Guard Larry Hayes blocks possible interference. The noteable Redside Power is displayed in this clash as Halfbacks Paul Franklin and Rob Brittain bring down their man. The 1969 Wasco County Union High School wrestling team was again extremely successful, ending its regular dual-meet season with twelve victories, three losses and one tie. This brought the team's six year total to 77-14-1 under Coach Hedrick. After suffering a stinging defeat by Corbett in December (the first loss handed to them by a B school in six years) it looked bad for the Redsides in the post season championships because Corbett and Colton were slated to tally the most team points and both teams were in the Sub-District meet. But the Redsides were not to be denied when the chips were down. Coach Hedrick entered twenty in the Sub-District meet and eighteen placed first through fourth, gaining 151 points and leaving Corbett in the runner-up position with 78 points. At this meet eleven Redsides qualified for District competition. First places went to Floyd Hooper, Steve Ellis, Larry Marshall, Dan Dyke, and Larry Hayes. Second places were Rick Ellis, Dwaine Moss, Bill Cox, Craig Snodgrass, Mark Holmes, and John Patton. Third places were Rick Cardenas, Rick Fargher, Greg Hayes, and Sid Moss. Fourth places were Steve Kuhlman, Benny Cox. and Dan Hayes. The District meet was held in Maupin and the same fired up team proved that Sub-District was not a chance victory! When the smoke cleared, the Redsides had piled up 102 points again leaving Corbett behind as the runner-up with only 60 points which was a solid victory for the Redsides, proof of their wrestling prowess. First place medals went to Bill Cox, Steve Ellis, Dan Dyke, and Mark Holmes. Second place medals went to Rick Ellis, Dwaine Moss, Larry Marshall, Floyd Hooper, and Larry Hayes. Third place medals went to Craig Snodgrass and John Patton. The State tournament was held in Corvallis and was the first official State B Wrestling Championship. The Redsides had overwhelmed all schools the previous year to win the first unofficial State B championship and were out to capture the first official title. Nine boys had qualified to seek the individual and team championships up for grabs. Again for the second straight year the Redsides overwhelmed all class B opposition by rolling up 71 points to runner-up Colton's 37, making the team the first in Wasco County Union High School History to win a state championship. Individual State champions were Bill Cox (123 lbs), Steve Ellis (136 lbs). Dan Dyke (157 lbs), and Mark Holmes (191 lbs). Second place medals went to Dwaine Moss (115 lbs), Floyd Hooper (123 lbs), and Larry Marshall (141 lbs). Third place medal went to Rick Ellis (106 lbs) and fourth place was Larry Hayes (unlimited class). Of the 28 team members who lettered in 1969 there were three seniors: Bob Alexander, Mark Holmes and Dan Hayes (co-captains). Honorary Captain was Carl Peterson who suffered a tragic accident that took his life. He was an outstanding wrestler and the team members dedicated the season to his honor. 35 Outstanding senior wrestler was Mark Holmes, State Champion at 191 pounds. He also placed fourth in the state against all competition at the freestyle and Greco-Roman Tourneys. Coach Hedrick was also honored by being selected as B Wrestling Coach of the Year and was nominated for B Coach of the Year by the Oregon Coach’s Association. He was also selected by the Oregon Cultural Exchange Wrestling Committee to manage the Oregon All-Star Wrestling team on their tour to New Zealand during the summer of 1969. WRESTLING The morale of each wrestler is boosted during a few brief moments of rest before the tournament begins. 36 With good reason to be proud, another successful Redside coach, Gene Hedrick, displays the trophies the wrestlers worked hard to win. Faced with a lack of height, the Redside hoopers proved that speed, quickness and a desire to win are adequate ingredients needed for a winning team. The Redsides opened the season minus several key players with a narrow 49-41 loss to Corbett. The following weekend, things began to bounce for Coach Schackman's team as they upset A-2 rival Sherman County 55-48 on the home court and trounced Lyle 72-40. On December 17, the Redsides edged by Culver 65-60 in what turned out to be the longest high school basketball game in the state of Oregon this year. Local fans were treated to four thrilling three minute overtime periods before the Redsides could finally put the victory in the books. The following weekend Wasco County again trounced Lyle, this time by a 63-49 count. Over the Christmas Holidays the Redsides dropped two games in the Joseph Holiday Tournament, the first to Joseph by a 40-36 count and the second to Wallowa 69-47. In league play the Redsides opened up with Dufur, and after trailing 11-0 went on to record a 68-39 win. Then Wasco Co. scored another close 60-56 win over Culver. The following night the Redsides were upset by the Cascade Locks team by a 46-42 count. The following weekend proved to be a tremendous success as the Redsides upset eventual league champion Arlington by a 61-59 score and avenged the seasons opening loss to Corbett by shellacking the Cardinals 74-58. The Redsides then downed Dufur once again, this time by a score of 57-44 before being trounced by Condon 60-41. Then for the third time this year downed Culver 47-35 and clobbered Cascade Locks 57-34. After suffering a 73-63 setback to Arlington, the Redsides handed Wheeler their worst defeat of the season 57-38. In the final regular season game, arch-rival Condon was soundly beaten 53-45 by the Redsides which gave the Wasco Countyites second place in the league action. In the District 6-B Tournament, Wasco County opened up with a thrilling 58-53 win over Dufur in a game which saw the Redsides trailing by six points late in the game. On the following night, state tournament hopes were crushed by Wheeler as they downed Maupin 53-45. In the final game of the season, the Redsides knocked Condon out of trophy contention by dumping the Devils 61-55 in double overtime, thus claiming 3RD place in the 6-B Tourney. Coach Schackman’s team finished the season with a 15 win and 7 loss record, also finishing undefeated on the home court 9-0. At the annual awards banquet senior, Dave Miller, was named the team's Most Valuable Player . Rob Brittain and Russ Paulson were named Most Improved Players and Bernie Hinzman and Joe Henry were honored as Most Inspirational Players , thus ending a very successful season. 42 . xst Bill Quinton, rebounding Bill Driver trying to get a tip at the District Tournament in The Dalles. U. H. S. track team performed outstandingly this year—both individually and collectively. We won most of our meets against the other A-2 and B schools of the area, won the Redsides Invitational against eight other schools, were the Sub-District and District 6-B Champions by a considerable margin, and to top the season off, we took third in the State B Track Meet, the best a track team from Wasco County has ever done. As individuals, the members of the track team did perhaps even better. At Sub-District we had four champions in eight events, and one winning relay team. Alan Mayhew won the shot put, discus and pole vault. Dave Miller won the long jump and the high jump. Bernie Hinzman won both the high hurdles and the low hurdles, and Bill Cox won the 100 yd. dash. The 440 relay team, made up of Bernie Hinzman, Bill Cox, Dave Miller, and Paul Franklin, also won. In winning the District 6-B team championship, we had individual champions in six events—Dave Miller in the long jump and high jump, Alan Mayhew in the pole vault and discus, Paul Franklin in the 100 yd. dash, and the 440 relay team of Bernie Hinzman, Bill Cox, Dave Miller, and Paul Franklin. Dave Miller broke the district record in the high jump with a vertical spring of 5' 10 1 2 , and in the long jump with 22’3 4 . The 440 relay team broke the district record by a whole second with a time of 45.8 seconds. Two other Redsides qualified for State in this meet by taking second—Dan Hayes in the high jump and Rick Fargher in the 880 yd. run. In addition to his two firsts, Alan Mayhew took two seconds —in the shot put and in the long jump. At the State Track Meet we took third with 38 points. Dave Miller was the State Champion in the long jump and also took fifth in the high jump. Alan Mayhew was the State Champion in the discus, and also took fourth in the shot put, fourth in the long jump and fifth in the pole vault. Placing in these four events netted him 20 points, for which he received a trophy for being top point man in the State Meet. Our other points were scored by Paul Franklin, who took fifth in the 100 yd. dash, and our 440 relay team which placed fourth. Eight school records fell this year: Dave Miller high jumped 6'1 2 , and long jumped 22’3 4 . Alan Mayhew pole vaulted 12'6 , threw the discus 137’4 and put the shot49' 1 2 . Bernie Hinzman triple jumped 36'. Carl Duhrkoop, Bill Box, Rick Fargher and Bill Lindley ran a mile relay time of 3:48. 1, and finally, Bernie Hinzman, Bill Cox, Dave Miller and Paul Franklin combined in the State Meet to run a 45. 1 second 440 yd. relay. Other fine efforts this year included: Alan Mayhew's 20'4 in the long jump at State, Paul Franklin's 10.2 second 100 yd. dash, Dave Miller’s 10.4 second 100, Bill Cox's 10.4 second 100, Bernie Hinzman's 10.4 second 100 and 22.4 second Low Hurdles, Bill Lindley's 54 second 440 yd. dash and 17 second high hurdles, Rick Fargher's 2:09.9 second 880 yd. run, Ken Franklin's 24.8 second 220 yd. dash, Dan Hayes' 5'7 high jump, Larry Marshall's 5'7 high jump, Bill Cox's 19'8 long jump, Steve Duhrkoop’s 11:29.0 second two mile, Terry Snodgrass' 140' javelin throw, Ross Alsup's 24.0 second low hurdles, and Carl Barnett's 40' shot put. The annual staff has worked with that goal in mind all year long without many of you even being aware of it. You made the memories happen. We hope we have produced a yearbook which will make the memories keep living. Since most of the staffers, as well as the advisor, were very inexperienced in this business of putting together a yearbook, we drew heavily on the experience of Kathy Morelli and Susan Bones, co-editors, who helped put together last year's annual. We also made several changes in this year's annual which we believe will make a better annual and a more memorable one for you. Some of these changes include: senior index, organization index, introduction, reorganization of sequence... Putting together an annual is work—hard work! Of course there are the fun times, too. Who else but the annual staff gets to see all the pictures ever taken during the school year—even the ones we didn't (or couldn't—?) put into the yearbook. Each of the annual staff members spent many nights after school going through mountains of negatives, developing film, cropping and trimming pictures, drawing layouts, editing and writing copy, pasting the final work on boards”, etc. etc. And what have we learned to make each of us a better pers ’ for the experience? A few more things about putting together a yearbook. .. What we like (and dislike) about working with one another.. .Our own weaknesses and strengths... How to put first things first.. .How to make next year's annual even better... We wish to thank Mr. Bob Paffrath of the American Yearbook Company who came to Maupin several times to work with us, offering suggestions which we feel have helped make this yearbook the best ever; Mr, Jack Briggs of Moderne Studios in Springfield who also spent many hours in Maupin with his camera and did a great deal of print developing; Mr. Chamberlain and the photo club who took the majority of the pictures in the sports and activities sections and developed many rolls of film; Coaches Heldt, Schackman, Hedrick and Kahle who wrote the summaries of their particular sports for one of the most successful years in the history of athletics at Maupin; Miss Van Fossan, our advisor; Michaelene Peterson for writing the introduction; the yearbook staff— Jackie Snodgrass, Vanda Woodside, Irene Kelly, Curtis Mayhew, Kathy Chamberlain, Joan Iverson, JoAnn Niemi, Margaret Brittain; and co-editors Kathy Morelli and Susan Bones. All of these people played an important part in some way or another in producing the yearbook which is your record of the 1968-69 school year. We hope that it is an accurate record—not only of the facts but also of the feelings.
