T. A. The Future Teachers of America is a club originally organized for all students who are possibly interested in entering the teaching profession. This club gives an individual a thorough understanding and acknowledgement of this profession. Many students who are only slightly interested, join to determine whether or not they would like this branch of education. For the person who is sincerely interested, it also helps him gain experience which will prove valuable in future years Bottom row loft to right-Bob Ward, Rexine Snodgrass, Goil Conley, Patsy Melum, John Neely. The Annual Staff Is very sorry this year that we don’t have any pictures of Graduation to put in the annual. We had slides that we could have developed but it would have made our annual 2-3 months later so we decided that we would not use the pictures so that you could receive the annual earlier. GRADUATION BACCALAUREATE The graduating class of 1964 held their Baccalaureate Commencement exercises on Sunday May 24, 1964. Their were twenty-three seniors who graduated this year. The senior class motto is Knowledge is treasure; practice is the key. Their class flowers are blue and white carnations and their class colors are blue and white. The invocation and Baccalaureate address was given by Rev. Carl-Reid Duhrkoop. The Salutatorian this year was Beverly Gray and Valedictorian was Gail Conley. Guest speaker was Dr. Errett Hummel from Portland State College, Portland Oregon. I might also add that he was a very good speaker. The class poem was read by Peggy Snodgrass. Entertainment for the evening was the Senior Quartet which includes Bill Ritchie, Chuck Ritchie, Joe Miller, and Rogers Murrary. Marlene Bales sang Moments to Remember.” Benediction was also by Rev. Duhrkoop. Graduation for the Class of '64 is now in the past and all the future is ahead. Best of luck in the future to all the graduated seniors. The year 1963 will go down in the hearts of many as being the finest point in their football memories. Backed by school spirit and community support the team displayed outstanding determination, effort, and ability to become the first team in Maupin’s history to play in a football state championship. They have set a goal for future teams to strive for. Placing second at the Crow tournament and placing first out of all Oregon Schools (A included) in the La Grande tournament was truly a remarkable achievement. Losing the most inspirational wrestler, captain, and stater, Bud Chittick, wilf be a loss to the team along with the other seniors but it looks like we will have another great season next year under the leadership of Coach Hedrick. The Redsides again won the Deschutes League going undefeated with 6 wins and no losses. Having won the league championship gave the Redsides a chance to play Merrill in the quarterfinal playoffs at Merrill. Losing this game by a score of 4-1 ended the season for the Redsides. The hitting was the bright spot of the season with 8 out of 9 starters finishing the season with 300 or better. Joe Miller 437, Larry Barr 413, Larry Ward 356, Chuck Ritchie 343, Steve Wing 302, John Neely 300, Wayne Lease 375, and Mike Angel 313. Joe led in stolen bases, most hits, and most two base hits. Larry Barr led in most runs scored and Larry Ward had the most RBIs and home runs. John Neely had the most base on balls. The team batting average for the starters and the overall team average was 293. In the pitching department Rogers Murray had the most wins followed by Larry Barr who had the best ERA. Ironically, they faced the same number of batters, 122, but Rogers walked 11 more than Larry, while he struck out 11 more than him. The team will lose 5 seniors but will still have many qualified underclassmen to take their places next year. It was a memorable and excellent season. 93 J. V. Redside Relays 3rd Sherman meet 2nd Wahtonka 1st League 1st District 3rd 1964 TRACK Moupin’s track team sent John Neely in the two mile, Dal Hammer in the 100 yard dash, and the 880 yard relay team consisting of Joe Miller, Ken Courtin, Dal Hammer and Mike Davis to the state “B meet held in Bend. Johnny placed third and Dal sixth to represent the school in a worthy manner. The team captured the LEAGUE title and went on to place third at the District meet held at Arlington. The Redsides did not capture their Redside Relays but showed the other teams in our league they could expect trouble which they got at all track meets in which we participated. Our relay team but the 880 yd. relay time down to 1:36.6 min. (at state) and Dal Hammer cut the time in the 100 yd. dash to 10.1 John Neely established the school record, league record, and district record in the two mile. Dal tied the league record and the relay team broke the league and district marks that we had set a year earlier. The members of this year’s team really worked hard to moke this such a successful season. 1964 BASKETBALL The 1963-1964 basketball season’s record is not a good example of the determination and drive the whole team possessed throughout the entire season. Height and impressive records did not impress the Redsides; they had to be shown. The highlight of the season came at the District 6B tournament held at The Dalles. The Redsides came home DISTRICT CHAMPIONS with the right to participate is the STATE tournament at Pendleton. This was another sport’s “first in the history of the school. This was a great year and the memories of tight games, especially the one with Cascade Locks in overtime, will long be remembered by the students and community. The seniors on the team were co-captains of the team for the year. Leading scorer for the team was John Neely who was chosen the most inspirational basketball player by his teammates. John along with guard Joe Miller were chosen the outstanding athletes of the school by the coaches. FOOTBALL The 1963 football season was the best in the school’s history. Playing Jefferson for the state championship will always be a high point of many memories. The Redsides played 12 games including the state championship game and won 11 of them. They defeated four A-2 schools and trooped all over the state for games with both A-2 and B opponents. Scoring a total of 327 points to their foes 75 is certainly something to remember. In the air they gained 116 and on the ground 2977 for a grand total of 3960 yards. Their opponents could only manage a total of 1689. Leading the scoring end of these figures was halfback Joe Miller, followed by fullback Jud Buswell and the other halfback Dale Hammer, Larry Barr had a great punting average of 39 yards. The team captains were Dave Anderson and John Neely. 2nd PLACE STATE Standing - Mrs. Iverson, Carol Claymier, Sara jo Stovall, Shirley Lindley, Judy Bothwell.
