World of Math and Science Science classes brought some of the extraordinary into the Hves of Union students. Junior high students had to study general science, and freshmen had to take either general sci- ence or earth science. After this, science courses were elec- tives. High school students were offered Biology 1 and 11, chemistiy, and physics. The three science teachers this year were Mr. Tom Woodward, Mr. Don Mikesell, and Mr. Richard Ashworth. The junior high classes studied science in many forms, not concentrating on any specific area. Freshman general sci- ence did the same. Earth science studied the physical pro- perties of the earth and the changes that have taken place over millions of years. Biology classes studied the various forms of plant and animal life, and studied the classifica- tion of organisms. Chemistry and physics classes did many experiments to explain the many properties of matter. Biology students use microscopes to study minute organisms. Mr. Woodward demonstrates the operation of a pH meter to three of his chemistry students. Mr. Mikesell and two of his physics students. Dan Witter and Dane Webb, do an experiment to analyze the spectrum. Mr. Ashworth explains to his eighth grade class what can happen if a person rushes through an e.xperiment-and his hand proves it! 45
