Foreign Language, Art, and Music Mr. Parsons directs the French I students in recitations from their texts. Miss Baylis reads from the board as the French II students read from their books. The foreign language department was headed by Joseph Parsons. He instructed the Latin I and II classes and French I. The highlight of the year for these classes was fixing a combina- tion Latin-French dinner. Miss Carol Baylis traveled from Liberty daily to teach French II. The foreign language classes studied not only the languages, but die culture and lifestyles of France and Italy. 42

Contemporary Issues Added to Curriculum Mr. Hodge answers questions for the contemporary issues class, a new elective for students. The social studies department was headed by Mr. Jacob Huffman. He was assisted by Mr. Larry Hodge. Mr. Huff- man taught government, American his- tory, geography, and sociology. Mr. Hodge taught all junior high social stu- dies, and he also taught economics and contemporary issues. Contemporary issues was a new elective added to the curriculum this year. It dealt with the problems of today, and students were taught to come up with answers to problems, not just criticize. Mr. Jacob Huffman lectures his second period government class on the laws and concepts of American government. 41

Give Students a Taste of Culture Tlic music department was lieadcd by Mr. William Rayer, who lauglit junior and senior liigh school music. He was assisted by Mrs. Mary Gahris, who taught elementary music. The elemen- tary music classes present a May Day music program. Tlie high school cho- rus, along with the bands, presented a spring concert on May 21 . The art classes were taught by Mr. Paul Holmes. Students used their artistic ability in many capacities. They made posters, murals, sculptures, and made banners for lining the halls during bas- ketball season. An art show was pre- sented at the May meeting of the U.C.A. Mr. Rayer plays piano for his seventh grade music class. Mr. Holmes watches his art class at work. Judy Buehler uses her artistic ability to get the attention of Jerry Frazee. 43
