Contemporary Issues Added to Curriculum Mr. Hodge answers questions for the contemporary issues class, a new elective for students. The social studies department was headed by Mr. Jacob Huffman. He was assisted by Mr. Larry Hodge. Mr. Huff- man taught government, American his- tory, geography, and sociology. Mr. Hodge taught all junior high social stu- dies, and he also taught economics and contemporary issues. Contemporary issues was a new elective added to the curriculum this year. It dealt with the problems of today, and students were taught to come up with answers to problems, not just criticize. Mr. Jacob Huffman lectures his second period government class on the laws and concepts of American government. 41

English Classes View Cainelot ' ' Tlie highlight of the year fo r the En- ghsh classes was the opportunity to view the film Camelot . Mrs. Mary McClure and Mrs, Esther Rupp headed the English department, and Mrs. Karen Martino aided them as head of the remedial reading. English classes ranged from the junior high level to Senior college prepara- tory. The students began receiving col- lege preparatory in their junior year, by studying American literature. In Senior English, emphasis was placed upon English literature and advanced composition. Mrs. Rupp teaches grammar to Sopho- mores. Cathy Ferris and Mary Swafford put their heads together to come up with better compositions. Mrs. Martino teaches remedial reading to elementary pupils. Foreign Language, Art, and Music Mr. Parsons directs the French I students in recitations from their texts. Miss Baylis reads from the board as the French II students read from their books. The foreign language department was headed by Joseph Parsons. He instructed the Latin I and II classes and French I. The highlight of the year for these classes was fixing a combina- tion Latin-French dinner. Miss Carol Baylis traveled from Liberty daily to teach French II. The foreign language classes studied not only the languages, but die culture and lifestyles of France and Italy. 42
