In Union Coiuity there was a Junior High Basketball League arranged with the following schools participating: Billingsville Brownsville, Dunlapsville, Kitchel, Liber- ty, and College Corner. Through the combined efforts of the team the boys were able to tie Liberty for first place, with seven victories and three defeats. After all scheduled games were played, Union planned a Junicr High Toulney at College Corner with all county teams taking part. In the first game of the tourney the boys defeated Kitchel by a score of 28-5, and on the following day beat Liberty 18-11. In the final game College Corner' dawned Dunlapsville 40-8, thereby winning the trophy given to them by the host school. They closed the season with 11 wins and 3 defeats. Practice started immediately with about 25 boys reporting. With that number it was decided to have two teams, one composed of 7th and 8th grade and the other made up of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. There was a three game schedule planned for the 7th and 8th grade team. Likewise a four' game schedule was arranged for the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade team. The latter team was undefeated, beating Liberty two games and Kitchel two gamesg While the former was defeated once byBi1lingsville and victorious over Greenwood and Billingsville. 7th, 8th, 9th Union 10g Liberty ........ --- Uni-on 5g Kitchel ...... --- Union 73 Liberty --- --- Union 145 Kitchel ................, 7th, 8th I Union 123 Billingsville .... --- 13 Union 7g Greenwood -- -- 5 Union 85 Billingsville --- -- 7 JUNIOR HIGH BASEBALL, 1936 W'hen the call was issued for spring baseball practice, fifteen boys reported the 1'irst evening. It has been rather dificult to schedule games because most of the neighbor- ing schools are playing softball. So far we have played three games winning over the Fairhaven grade school 5-6, conquering also the I. G. A. Juniors of College Corner 6-4, but losing to Fairhaven 6 to 7. The following boys have been practicing: Blacker, Moore, McFarland, Paxton, Set- tle, Whiteman, Kline, Maddock, Hampton, Norvell, Fields, Whitaker, Hartley, Hensley, and Caskey. The last three boys mentioned have been doing the pitching. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL TRACK, 1936 In the physical education classes the boys have been working on track, in prepara- tion fo-r the Field Day the last day of school. This work is being done for' grades 7, 8, and 9, both boys and girls. We have some very promising athletes in the grades for a track team in the next few years. The following boys comprised the team: catcher, Duckett: pitchers, Shirkey and McDillg first base, Marcumg second base, Dotyg short stop, Dickeng third base, Hartley: roving short, Smithg fielders, Patton, Fiischex, and Ag-new. Union 93 Kitchel ............... 1- 2 Union 11: Kitchel ................. 0 Unicn 14: Brownsville ............. 6 Union 143 Brownsville --- ---- 2 PLAYGBOUN D BALL, 1935 A Union County Playground Ball League was organized in the fall of 1935. Browns- ville, Kitchel, Liberty, and College Corner, all having teams. Prospects were very bright at Union for a winning team since only .one player had graduated from the team which was undefeated the year before. The first game was played at Brownsville and Union lost 9-6. Two games were played with each team and Union won all its remaining five games to win the championship of the county. The following boys were members of the championship team: Duckett, Shirkey, Marcum, McDill, Doty, Dicken, Hartley, Agnew, Smith, Patton, White. BASEBALL 1936 With all of the boys from the team of '35 remaining, the prospects for a winning team was exceedingly good. Six games have been played with Union winning four and losing two - both by one run. Liberty is the only remaining game on the schedule. With only two days practice, the opening game was played with Dixon at Dixon. It developed into a pitcher's battle between Marcum and Sommers. Dixon scored the only run of the game in the first inning and the game was Dixon's 1 to 0. Dicken was injured early in the game and lost fo: the remainder of the season. The next game was with McGuffey of Oxford. The day was exceedingly cold but the batting eyes of both teams were hot and Union won a free contest 17 to 7. Camden was the next victim for Marcum and they were defeated 11 to 6. A well-played game with West Elkton followed and was also added to the wiin column 4 to 2. In a close contest Gratis was defeated 6 to 5. Marcum developed a sore arm and with no practice Ellis McDill stepped in and pitched a very creditable game against McGuffey. Going into the last inning with the score 5 to 2 against Union and two men on base Hartley lined out a double to score both men making the score 5 to 4. Hartley immediately stole third but was left there as the McGuffey pitcher bore down and struck out the Union batter. McCfu.fIey won 5 to 4. Duckett has been doing the catchingg Marcum and McDill the pitching. Williams, White, Doty, and Agnew have been playing the infieldg and Hartley, Smith, Patton, Martin, and Shirkey the outfield. The remaining game on the schedule is with Liberty and we are hoping to defeat them as they have a strong team this year. TRACK 1936 A comparatively new sport to Union was inaugurated - track and field events. The boys, both Junior and Senior Hi, have taken quite an interest Doty and Shirkey placed in the 100-yard dash and half-mile respectively at the Lanier Relay. In a dual' meet with McGuffey, Union made a very creditable showing, winning 7 of 13 events and was able to enter men in only 10 of these events. Doty was high point man of the meet by winning the 100, 220, and 440-yard dashes. Shirkey won the 880, Marcum the high jump, Smith the javelin, and the medley relay was also won. Sheets, Doty, McDill, and Shirkey COIIID-0S8d the relay team. Toney and Goodwin also took part in the meet, Toney placing second in the mile run Coach Glass has entered several in the tri-,state meet at Oxford and also the district meet at Dayton.
