Basketball 1935-1936, Continued SECOND SQUAD The second squad had a splendid record for the year. They matched game for game with thte first team until the last game of the season when they defeated Liberty to give them a game edge. They played fine ball all year and, like the first team, there were no ndividual stars. Duckett, Williams, McDill, C. Hartley, and Benge played in most of the games. Shirkey, Arnold, Bake, Moor, Brown, Raisch, Toney, Toole, and Martin gave the team plenty of reserve material. Duckett, McDill, and Benge will be lost by graduation, and Arnold has moved to another district. This will leave eleven to compete for first team position next year. In addition to these men, Coach Gflass will have several of Coach Dils' Champion Grade team to pick from for his squad. Bill White served his, second year as manager. The iirst ten names made UD the first team, while the remainder were used as reserves. In Union Coiuity there was a Junior High Basketball League arranged with the following schools participating: Billingsville Brownsville, Dunlapsville, Kitchel, Liber- ty, and College Corner. Through the combined efforts of the team the boys were able to tie Liberty for first place, with seven victories and three defeats. After all scheduled games were played, Union planned a Junicr High Toulney at College Corner with all county teams taking part. In the first game of the tourney the boys defeated Kitchel by a score of 28-5, and on the following day beat Liberty 18-11. In the final game College Corner' dawned Dunlapsville 40-8, thereby winning the trophy given to them by the host school. They closed the season with 11 wins and 3 defeats. Practice started immediately with about 25 boys reporting. With that number it was decided to have two teams, one composed of 7th and 8th grade and the other made up of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. There was a three game schedule planned for the 7th and 8th grade team. Likewise a four' game schedule was arranged for the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade team. The latter team was undefeated, beating Liberty two games and Kitchel two gamesg While the former was defeated once byBi1lingsville and victorious over Greenwood and Billingsville. 7th, 8th, 9th Union 10g Liberty ........ --- Uni-on 5g Kitchel ...... --- Union 73 Liberty --- --- Union 145 Kitchel ................, 7th, 8th I Union 123 Billingsville .... --- 13 Union 7g Greenwood -- -- 5 Union 85 Billingsville --- -- 7 JUNIOR HIGH BASEBALL, 1936 W'hen the call was issued for spring baseball practice, fifteen boys reported the 1'irst evening. It has been rather dificult to schedule games because most of the neighbor- ing schools are playing softball. So far we have played three games winning over the Fairhaven grade school 5-6, conquering also the I. G. A. Juniors of College Corner 6-4, but losing to Fairhaven 6 to 7. The following boys have been practicing: Blacker, Moore, McFarland, Paxton, Set- tle, Whiteman, Kline, Maddock, Hampton, Norvell, Fields, Whitaker, Hartley, Hensley, and Caskey. The last three boys mentioned have been doing the pitching. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL TRACK, 1936 In the physical education classes the boys have been working on track, in prepara- tion fo-r the Field Day the last day of school. This work is being done for' grades 7, 8, and 9, both boys and girls. We have some very promising athletes in the grades for a track team in the next few years.
