Dayton Sectional Union 20 St. Andrews Unitn 17' Brookville, O Charles Dils assumed his duties as coach cf the second squad. He had very little experienced material to work with and was forced to spend much of his time in teaching fundamentals. The team showed steady impiovement from game to game and at the end of the season were playing a line tpye of game. Their seas-n's record was eight won and ten lost. Bill W'hite served as 3 very capable manager. BASKET BALL, 1935-1936 The past season was one cf the most successful in the history of Union High School. Although failing to place in the county tournament, the Trojans had a vely successful season. The first squad had a, record of fifteen won and four lost for the regular season. They finished nrst in the Preble County League with a recogd of eight won and none lost. In the first round of the Preble County Tournament the Trojans easily defeated Verona 42-7. The major upset of the tourney took place in the second round when the Trojans were defeated by Jackson 22-16. The second squad enjcyed even more success than the first team. Their record was sixteen won and three lost. Making a total record for both teams for the year of 32 games won and eight lost or a percentage of .800. The first call for basketball was issued on October 7th. Twenty-five players re- sponded including seven letter men from the championship team of the previous year. ,Because of this wealth of material a difiicult schedule of nineteen games was ar- ranged. With ten or twelve boys fighting for positions on the starting team the com- petition was exceedingly keen. The team was handicapped at times by sickness es- pecially just before the tournament when Earhart and Marcum were out. The nrst squad was composed cf the following players: Agnew, Dicken, Doty, Duckett, Earhart, E. Hartley, Marcum. McDill, and Patton. Smith was the tenth man to the tournament. Only two, Agnew and Doty, played in every game. Seven of these boys will be lcst by graduation. Dicken has completed four years as a member cf the first squad. Dicken, Agnew, Hartley, and Marcum have been members of the tournament team for four yearsg Earhart for three yearsg and Duckett and McDil1 for two years. This is an enviable record established by these boys. They have been a bulwark of athletic strength to Old Union and their record will be one for future classes to live up to. This will leave cnly three letter men for Coach Glass to build his 1936-37 net machine around. Basketball 1935-1936, Continued SECOND SQUAD The second squad had a splendid record for the year. They matched game for game with thte first team until the last game of the season when they defeated Liberty to give them a game edge. They played fine ball all year and, like the first team, there were no ndividual stars. Duckett, Williams, McDill, C. Hartley, and Benge played in most of the games. Shirkey, Arnold, Bake, Moor, Brown, Raisch, Toney, Toole, and Martin gave the team plenty of reserve material. Duckett, McDill, and Benge will be lost by graduation, and Arnold has moved to another district. This will leave eleven to compete for first team position next year. In addition to these men, Coach Gflass will have several of Coach Dils' Champion Grade team to pick from for his squad. Bill White served his, second year as manager.
